I had sky high expectations for this one. Being on the top 10 list of burgers to try in Europe, I expected a real treat. Hunting for the perfect gluten free burger takes you to a lot of places with excellent burgers. This time it was time to check out the restaurant in St. Pedersstræde.
Cock's and cows in St. Pedersstræde is OK, but not the best. We arrived here a thursday night, and the place was packed with burger eating guests. The waiter asked me if we had a reservation, which we didn't. He made a "well, you really should have had one" kind of face and went to talk with some other staff members. I got the feeling that he was hoping we would go away and find somewhere else to eat. Two long minutes later he came back and said we could sit by a table right by the door. I asked him if it was possible to rather sit somewhere with proper chairs instead of barstools, and got placed on a tiny table stuck in between two others. The margin in between each table was maybe 8 inches. Waaaaay to close. Even though we were just two people dining out, it felt like we were a party of eight. At one point it actually became rather awkward, when a guest spilled her drink on the guest sitting next to her. Poor girl. And they were clearly on a date too.
When our waiter arrived, she insisted on speaking english with us, even though we answered in norwegian/danish. Like that isn't good enough? I'm not sure I like places where they do this thing. The waiter herself was clearly danish judging by her accent. Awkward?
The food was all right. At first bite, the meat felt tender and juicy, with just the right amount of salt. After eating through half the meal however, I noticed they had went overboard with the ketchup. My opinion when it comes to burgers and sauce is that you always should have a special (and hopefully secret) burger sauce that makes ketchup and mustard unnecessary. This one had just ketchup and mustard. Luckily there was enough salat, tomatoes and onion to make it all right. The gluten free bread was also good enough. Could have been a lot better though.
I have to give them only 2 stars because of their lousy service. If the burger was better, I would have given 3 in stead.
Based on other burgers I've tasted and the service, I don't think I will eat at Cock's and Cows in a while. read more
