AMAZING! I grew up in Texas but I've been living in Colorado for 20 years, and I was really missing the Mexican food in Texas. I came out here to visit my parents and found this place nearby where they live and took them out. The owners are so sweet and took care of us, and the food had HUGE portions and were so good! The carne asada burrito platter could easily feed two people. I got the chicken fajitas and they were seasoned so well, but not too spicy, and came out sizzling. It was so tender it was falling apart while I was putting it in the tortillas! Even the chips and tortillas came out hot--fresh I think? The restaurant's decor was pretty typical for a small, casual strip mall place, nothing fancy, but everything was clean. There was a TV on but it wasn't too loud. There's a really beautiful mural on the wall, too. I wish I lived nearby so I could go more often. Definitely try it out!! read more

We go here once or twice a week. The husband and wife that owns this business are sweet and happy to see you each time you walk in the door. Its just a little place in a small strip center, but well worth a try. The food is cooked to order and outstanding. Prices are great. He says he likes real Mexican food, and he liked talking to them, my dad doesn't speak English very well and I can tell that he related to them well, so I guess he liked to hang out there for dinner. This place is Mexican food on crack. Haven't been here in a few years, it's across town for me, and I remember their killer nachos plate. Decided it was time to satisfy my Mexican food craving and try them again. Woooo doggie! Got the chile relleno & cheese enchilada plate to go. Couldn't wait to dig in, it was smellin' up my car something fierce. I ate it all up like the house was on fire, it was so dang good. Everything, including the rice & beans are loaded with flavor. Decided I'm hitting this place for lunch at least once every week, even tho I'm allergic to cheese. My stomach is just going to have to deal wid it. Over the years, this place was broken into at least twice. Dang local lowlifes. The husband/wife owners did not give it up and I'm so thankful. Next potluck at work, I'm bringing Mexican. My wife and I finally had a chance to try this place out today (4/6/17), as our previous attempts to eat here have been met with a closed restaurant, despite the restaurant having posted open hours during the times we tried to eat here. The restaurant is simply, but cleanly decorated. We approached the menu broad, and were kindly greeted by the male and female owners. After reviewing the menu board for a moment, we placed our order with the gentlemen. We wanted a nachos to share, my wife wanted an a la carte chili relleno...before we could continue ordering, we were told they didn't have any chili relleno. Ok...we look over the menu board again, and decided on a nachos with chicken, and 3 tacos al carbon (2 for me, and 1 for my wife). We were then asked by the gentlemen, if we were sure, because the nachos are big. That sort of struck me as a little rude, but I did tell the gentlemen that if any food was leftover, we would simply take it home. We found a table; shortly thereafter, the lady delivered to our table. I was very unimpressed by the chips and salsa; the chips were not the freshest IMO, and the salsa was bland at best. After another few minutes (the food is made fresh to order, a definite plus), our food was delivered to our table, along with a squeezable bottle of homemade salsa. The plate of nachos looked great; however, I was immediately unimpressed by the look of the tacos. The chicken meat was okay, but the tortillas tasted as though they came from a grocery store, and were simply warmed up. The nachos were noticeably better, the chicken again was alright, but the refried beans were very good, as well as the rest of tbe items on the nacho plate. We especially liked the fact they put raw jalepeños on there, instead of pickled. What really picked everything up, was the bottle of homemade salsa...it paired perfectly with the nachos, and made the tacos more palatable. All in all, this was definitely not the best Mexican food we've eaten, nor was it the worst. Will we come back? Maybe. read more

I recently moved to Hemet and needed nourishment. I am absolutely saying that their customer service is great and that this couple works their butts off! Their food is good and really belongs in a restaurant. For a taco shop, that is supposed to be fast food the price VS. the portion it is not really good. The portions are small but the food is really good. The restaurant is very clean and they do not charge me for ice (apparently that is a thing here in Hemet). The husband and wife team are always here so there has not been any inconsistency with how they cook their food. It is always good. I really enjoy their salsa that seems to always be fresh. I am glad they are near by, I just wish their portions were larger. Specifically their bean and cheese burritos which seem to be child size (in my opinion). I usually order #9 a beef tamale and a chile relleno and I love it. My husband orders carne asada chimichanga along with some type of tacos. I will keep coming back when I do not feel like cooking. Driving back to Phoenix and we needed a place for lunch. We wanted Mexican and decided to go here based on the yelp reviews. 1. First impression - upon walking in I noticed the restaurant was INCREDIBLY clean. No overpowering smells of cleaner, but you can tell the owners take pride in how their restaurant looks. 2. The woman who took my order (I'm assuming one of the owners) was incredibly friendly. Confirmed what came on each item I ordered (carne asada fries and a carne asada burrito). 3. Food is made fresh to order. Yum! I sat on the bench for a few minutes waiting for my order to be ready, paid and we were on our way. The food? Outstanding. The carne asada fries were top notch. Crispy fries, delicious carne asada and fresh topping. Hubby said his burrito was delicious as well. The next time we drove through Hemet we'll be sure to stop in. read more

My sister and I walked here for a quick bite while getting the car washed, not knowing that it was a full service restaurant. The service was amazing, the music was great, and the owners were genuinely happy to be helping us.. we felt very at home (more so like we were at grandmas house). First of all this restaurant is super clean, which is one of the first things I always notice. The owner is the cook so you get something to eat that is made with love and pride. This place was a fantastic suprise! My wife and I were tired off the same old choices in town last weekend so we decided to try something new, "Tacos El Rey." What a treat! When we walked in, the first thing I noticed was that the place was spotless and had a very pleasant smell. Its a very simple yet tasteful decoration motif, think "Rustic Mexican". Their menu was comprehensive, not overwhelming. It had everything I wanted from a Mexican restaurant. I ended up ordering the Ham Torta. This thing was indescribably delicious! The blend of flavors was fantastic. My wife got the Chicken tamales which was served covered in a green sauce and cheese. That tasted fantastic as well. The icing on the cake was the flan. Typically, other taco shops in Hemet serve "flan". You have to use the quotation marks because its their cheaper, easier to prepare, version of flan which tastes very flavorless and bland like modified jello. Tacos El Rey served up the real deal. Their Flan was rich, creamy, and had a perfect level of sweetness. I am definitely looking forward to going back and trying all of the other items on the menu. Including the Deep Fried Ice Cream. Unfortunately the few times I have visited Tacos El Rey it's been dead inside. It's too bad because Hemet is filled with forgettable taco shops. Hemet is notorious for being rough on small businesses. Even delicious little hole in the wall restaurants like this one. People should really consider giving this place a go before heading to their typical taco stop. If you want a familiar, forgettable generic Mexican experience, go west, past Tacos El Rey to a generic taco shop for a generic meal. I hate to write one of the few negative reviews, but I didn't actually eat the food here so I can't say whether it's good or not. Went here recently because of Yelp. Waking in the front door, the VERY strong smell of Pine Sol floor cleaner was almost enough to knock me out. Apparently it was the cook's lunch hour so he just looked up from his seat at one of the tables when we came in... No greeting or attempt to get up... Just stared us down. When I asked my friend if it was OK if we got an order to go rather than staying due to strong pine Sol smell, the cook said why don't you go next door and get a pizza? And asked if I thought the smell was strong. I said yes... His attitude was so nasty, I just turned around and left. Food may be great, but I don't need the attitude or the Pine Sol, thanks. read more

We were looking for something nearby that had coctel de camaron and yelp had a review that showed this place did so we decided to try it. However when we got there, I decided to go for the molcajete mixto because it sounded way better. It came with carne asada , chicken, chorizo, shrimp and a nopal. It was soooooo good. If you want crappy fast food, go to Taco Bell. If you want fast food, go to any of the other drive through places. If you want made to order authentic Mexican food served by great and friendly people at a good price, go to Cocina Tacos El Rey. I've eaten here several times. Every time I've tried something different and have never been let down. It always seems to be the same two people working. They are nice and sweet as can be and truly seem like good and deserving people of our business. Once you order, you pick your seat and the give you delicious fresh made chips and salsa to hold you over as they make your meal. This is NOT fast food. It's made to order and deliciously so. The flavors show it. But, expect to wait a bit for your food...you won't regret it and it's not a bad wait.
