Legit!!! Road-tripping from Los Angeles to Chicago, my husband found this place online. Fresh guac with cilantro and tomato, salsa was fresh and what I'd expect from an old-school Mexican restaurant, chips were hot, quality, big chunky slices of fresh avocado in my vegetarian avocado and pico de gallo taco. My husband had the steak tacos - served taqueria style with cilantro and lime - 10/10. My daughter got her daily go-to of chicken and rice - audible gasp of joy when she opened her plate, she said it was "moistalicious" and gave it a big thumbs up. We eat Mexican food everyday of our lives and if Cocina Hernandez was in LA I'd be there every day. Big recommend and next time I'm headed through Iowa I am here!!! read more

My husband and I just stopped with our 2 kids. We were in Grinnell for the morning and thought we would try something new before heading back to Des Moines. We should have just kept going on to Des Moines. This little hole in the wall was just that. The chips were stale. I asked for a new basket which came out nice and warm but were greasy and still tasted off to me. Almost lost my appetite going to the bathroom. I came back and wanted to leave but my husband convinced me to stay since I ordered a margarita. The margarita was a horrible premix and tasted without alcohol. I ordered the chicken chimichanga, which sorry to say I only ate 3 bites. It tasted Frozen and when I opened it up to eat the chicken it tasted like vinegar. The rice and beans we're nothing to speak of. I left in disgust. We came here because of the Yelp ratings. Colfax I'm sorry if you think THIS is good Mexican. read more

I was driving cross country and stopped in sleepy Colfax to watch the World Cup. A tiny Mexican restaurant in a small town in the midwest generally means taking up residence in the bathroom, not so, here. While the decor may be a bit cliche, the service and food were top notch. My server was the owner and he could not have been more accommodating. I requested that he omit peppers from my quesadilla and instead he put in broccoli. It was inspired and fantastic. One of the best Mexican meals I have had in years, including several trips to Mexico. While I may not be an authority on Mexican cuisine and I don't know anything about the restaurant scene around Colfax, do yourself a favor and stop by this charmingly delicious spot. Went to dinner with my mom and her best friend and then got blown away by how amazing this place was! I really wasn't expecting much since it was Colfax, but I was soooo wrong!! We've been here a few times. The times before this most recent, the place was clean, the wait staff friendly and efficient and the food was good. This most recent visit, our table of 4 and another table of 3 were the only people in the restaurant and it took 15 minutes for the waitress to come and ask for our drink order. The restaurant was NOT CLEAN nor was the waitress. The food took 30 minutes to arrive and it was luke warm and not great. The waitress didn't return to fill drinks or anything. She returned to bring the check after waiting for a long time for it. Not going to return. read more

We drove over 12hrs from Pittsburgh to Colfax, Iowa, and stopped here for dinner after consulting Yelp (we were trying to avoid fast food chains as much as possible for dinner) and were very pleasantly surprised by how good this place was! I had the dinner combo (a chimichanga, a quesadilla, rice and beans for $8) and another friend had the chicken fajitas (also about $8-9). The portions were generous, the food was very flavorful, and the overall ambience was extremely charming -- the decor was just the right amount of garish and was quite reminiscent of a little beachside restaurant in rural Mexico in the 1990s (not that I've actually been to one). Excellect in quality and value one of the best mexican restaurants we have been to in all our wide travels. Perfect balanced fresh guacamole and salsa and chips. Nice choice of combination specials. Had the beef chimichanga which has cheese sauce and the beef enchilada which has a great sauce goes perfect with the very nice beans and rice. I suspect everything they make is great. read more
