Better than average. Guac had a lot of lime and cilantro. Salsa was not my favorite but it was fine. I had the chicken enchilada, taco and tamale. I was pleasantly surprised with the tamale. Not many mexican restaurants get it right and this one was very good. It all comes down to the sauce and seasoning. While I think the chicken enchilada could have had more seasoning, the sauce balanced it. read more

I am now officially an adopted Californian. We have no Taco John's or Taco Bells. We have taco trucks, my favorite restaurant Chronic Tacos, and authentic Mexican food. I lovvvveeeee Mexican food! I said that if you vote for me for president I will gladly build a wall so those trucks can't get back into Mexico that would take my favorite cuisine makers with them. I won't mention the name of the other Mexican restaurant in Newton but they are not REAL Mexican food. It is Americanized over there. I took a look at the menu today at El Sombrero and I was like, "Whaaaaa!!!!! You have my potato tacos. Gimme gimme!" Last time I was in town they were even able to cater to making me a vegan taco (beans & rice instead of meat). I'm missing living in Little Mexico right now. The female server Sun 4.23 was extremely unfriendly. She was one of the most rude servers that I've ever experienced and should definitely consider a non-front facing role. The salsa had no flavor. Potato burrito was pretty good. Just an FYI to any vegetarians...There are a lot of things listed on the vegetarian options that would not be because they do contain their beans which are made with lard. there was just a really strange creepy vibe to this place. Employees not wearing gloves or masks during a pandemic, waitresses handling cash and food without washing hands inbetween tasks, posting a "masks required" sign on the door yet a handful of patrons were wearing them. It was disgusting and extremely irresponsible business practices during a global pandemic. There's absolutely no excuse for failure to implement safety precautions. This was a real lunchtime treat for us four seniors. We started with the warm chips and salsa .. all good. The lime margarita was part of the lynch special - delicious. Our party had a beef enchilada along with a chicken enchilada with rice and beans - generous portions all around. The chicken fajitas came to the table sizzling and full of flavor with the seasoning fantastic. The guacamole salad was a bed of lettuce topped with a dip of guacamole which could have been bigger. This place was pretty meh overall. We were one of only two occupied tables in there. The service was slow and nonexistent at best. Beyond the initial, "what d'ya wanna drink" visit we didn't see our "waiter" again; except to bring the check. And all of that would be fine if my food wasn't half burned! I'm not sure what it was that was burned on it, either the tortillas or the mushrooms or whatever; but it tasted like they scraped the grill over half the food. I went ahead and ate it because I was hungry and the sparse not-burned parts were actually edible, and god only knows when/if we were getting anything out of that kitchen again and *what* it would've looked like then. My bad, I should've said something. What really pissed me off was when he blankly asked "how was everything?", when we went to pay, and he didn't seem to care whatsoever when I told him it probably would've tasted better if it wasn't burned -like I'd just asked him about the weather. So I said, "does that not bother you that the food was half-burned", to which he proceeded to go into a dissertation of what might or might not be burned or what constitutes "burned"? Seriously? Anyway, this was a fly-by crap-hole in the wall place and it lived up to that expectation and we will not be coming back here. I hear the Taco John's in town makes decent food. read more

This was by far the worst service at a restaurant that I has ever experienced. We sat outside and saw our server maybe 3 times. He did not even talk when he came to take our order, about 30 minutes after we sat down, and just stood next to me with his pen expecting me to start talking. The food came out pretty quickly and tasted ok, but then he never came to check on us and didn't bring our check until we started to get up to get ready to leave. Then it took forever to pay! One of my favorite locally owned Mexican food spots! Our family enjoys going here on almost a weekly basis. The Salsa and chips first brought to you when you sit down are great. The chips are warm and the salsa is flavorful. My favorite appetizer is the Guacamole Mexicanos (fresh cut avocados and pico de gallo). The kids love the bean dip and cheese dip. I'm still exploring new menu options every visit so I don't have a favorite just yet. The wait staff is attentive and helpful. This family owned restaurant will not disappoint. read more

My wife and I generally eat at La #$%&*=, but decided to give this place a try again after many years. I can honestly say the food here had a much better flavor, though I am not sure the portion size of some of the dishes are on par with their local competitor. My wife had the chicken taco salad in which she enjoyed, but thought the shell was rather small and the lettuce was on the scarce side. One thing she did like is that her chicken didn't appear to be swimming in water like the @# Cabana's. I had the chicken burrito and Chili Rellano and I thought they were both quite good. After the meal is when we received even a better treat. We did not have to wait forever and chase somone down for a ticket that wasn't prepared in advance. Also we did not have to guess what our total charge was going to be before heading to the register like that other place. I often walk out of the other joint feeling as if I were overcharged and wonder where all of the remaining moths went that were in my billfold. They never write any figures on the check, so a person doesn't know to question if they are being overchargered in advance of paying at the cabin (the cabana, La Cabin - you know . . . that other place). read more

Don't know how this place had any good reviews. We were a party of 4 dining on the outside patio, which was quite worn. However, we had never felt more unwelcome in any dining establishment before. When the server finally showed up, did not speak, but just stood there staring at us. It was quite awkward and we eventually were able to place our order after he grudgingly brought our drinks. When our food arrived, it was okay, but lacked appropriate plates. The fajitas came on the typical sizzling platter, the tortillas wrapped in foil on no plate, & a plate the size of a saucer to eat from. The kids got a platter of rice to share with no extra plate & their tacos came on a piece of aluminum foil. The server never came back to ask us if we needed anything until we were done. We didn't want to run all over the restaurant looking for him, so we made do as we were just passing through town. Our check finally came, but we did have to find hi to pay.
