The muffin also lacked any filling, so it was dry and plain, other than the topping, which was way too sweet. The cookie wasn't that bad, I wished that they used dark chocolate because it was really sweet, and a bit hard. The best cookies for me are the ones that are crispy on the outside but soft in the inside, which this one is hard throughout. I personally don't like sweet things so if you have a sweet tooth, definitely check it out - but I was surprised about the muffin as I never seen such an oily muffin before but that's also dry.

I have recently tried their lattes and it was decent. I also had their Turkey & Cranberry Panini, which I enjoyed. Their muffins and Vegan Brownies are great too, so I highly recommend trying them. This is the best coffee shop in Mission. I hope to come back to The Penny soon.

Once at the counter, pleasantly greeted and our order taken for a cortado, one of each of the featured focaccias, and a buckwheat chocolate chip cookie. We sat at a two top by a window which allowed us to take in the late morning sunshine and see all the birds on the trees outside. The cortado was spot on and served in a handmade cup. The focaccias were substantial and had a great tang. The buckwheat chocolate chip cookie was tasty day of and day after. I enjoyed also seeing the production baking area that was visible behind the main retail counters. Seeing the bakers shape the loaves, dipped into the seed mixture, and placed into bannetons arranged on speed carts to proof before baking.

The women working were DOLLS! So sweet. I could tell they had the ordering counter down to a science and were super efficient while still being friendly and spending time with each customer. I've been dying to try this bakery for awhile and each time I have failed and it's no one's fault but mine since they were either sold out or I came on a day they were closed. So this day I planned ahead. I got there ten minutes before opening which always makes me feel awkward but a line was already formed outside. Once they opened you go in and are greeted with a wide array of pastries and baked goods. I picked quite a few but will say that I'm biased as I went to pastry school and well this was the best croissant I've ever had. It was flaky on the outside and nice and buttery on the inside. You can tell that they worked hard on these and laminated them perfectly. The coffee was good too but the pastries stole the show and I will be back.
