Came with a friend to watch Wicked over the weekend! While I enjoyed the movie, I didn't feel like this spot was necessarily the best viewing experience. I do appreciate local spots and found many of the aspects of the cinema fun and vintage, but the theaters and screens were really small. When booking, I'd recommend sitting a bit closer to the screen. Seats were comfortable. Some portion of our pre-movie theater experience consisted of tv ads (and few movie trailers) which I found a bit disappointing. This is NOT a good place to see a movie. I was really hoping I'd like this place so I could support a local business, but it's just not good. The screen quality is bad, the theater is cramped, the seats are uncomfortable, and they refuse to kick out poorly behaving guests. Two people in front of me were talking and watching TikToks on their phones the entire movie! I politely asked them to stop twice and they ignored me. I left the theater and found an employee and asked them to remove the two people. The employee said they would kick them out. When the employee got to my theater the two people were literally on their phones watching TikToks with the volume on right then, but all the employee did was lazily tell them to "be considerate" and left. The two people laughed and kept watching TikToks, ruining the entire movie for everyone. Then the staff refused to give me a refund. Horrible experience! read more

We saw the new Top Gun at Cobble Hill Cinemas a few weeks ago when we were in NYC for an extended holiday weekend. I know everyone wants recliner seats and cushy chairs and fancy food at theaters now, but I love NYC's older movie theaters. When I was in college, one of my favorite things to do was to go see a movie at any of NYC's smaller, older movie theaters after my last class of the day. Cobble Hill Cinemas is like so many of those theaters I used to visit then. It's not a fancy, renovated theater. But it's a theater I immediately loved for its nostalgic simplicity. I had a great time. It's really all you need - an entertaining movie in a dark theater with other people laughing or gasping or tearing up. I have been coming to this theatre for over 50 years and today I had a small bag of candy in my wife's purse with a bottle of water. I'm 64 years old and the policy was no out door food. So they left me with the water and told me to drop the candy in a bin. To pick it up at the end of the movie. So I told them that since its I a bin what if somebody picks it up. They said that they were not responsible for it. Now that was just stupid. It's in there bin and not surcure. This is not a way to treat paying customers, especially senior's. I will never go back to this theatre ever again. You can keep your bad additut and shity customer service. If anyone comes here just hide your stuff in your pockets. Not a fan of this theater. I expected it to be a nice standard theater and it was terrible. Like the section 8 of movie theaters. The tickets should be $5 for how bad it is. The room you watch the movie in is so small and the seats are close together. No reclining to my knowledge. It just felt dirty. The screen quality was not clear and the audio was like a TV blasted. No surround sound so every noise disturbed your movie experience. Then this theater turned the lights on before the post credits came on. And I ended up leaving before the 2nd one. Main Street prices & a truly nostalgic small town experience in a gorgeous stretch of BK! This place is not big or fancy, its almost too cozy. The seats are very broken in. The projectors are mediocre. The acoustics not optimal. The bathrooms are claustrophobic. The butter machine may cause chest pains. Bundle that altogether and you have a truly special experience that is just as beautiful but way more authentic than a Restoration Hardware gallery. Cobble Hill Cinemas is my favorite movie theater to visit. I have been going here for many years. I used to go here frequently to see films before Covid. More recently I saw "The Holdovers" with friends, On Tuesdays and Thursdays all day you can get reduced prices for tickets. The first showing or matinee performances any day will get you discounted prices as well. The theater has been revamped with new seating but still has the old school vibe. I love the message which tells you to make sure to "turnoff pagers and cell phones" before the movie starts. I have never had a problem with any of the staff working here. I felt so bad disappointing my grandson when we went to see "Willy Wonka" at the Cobble Hill Cinemas. We accidentally got tickets in the tiny upstairs theater for the front row, thinking it was the last row. It's a travesty to sell those tickets as the view is ridiculous. Even my 6 year old grandson who was so excited to see this movie, said he couldn't sit so close to the screen. Also, we couldn't even find our seats A7 and A8. Other customers tried and said there was no 7 or 8. With no staff to help us, we went downstairs to the staff at the door. Too busy. No empathy. No refund, of course. Well, I wanted to enjoy my return trip to Cobble Hill first time since the pandemic (last film I saw was 2019's Rocketman) but alas, I won't be coming back ever. Just a comically bad experience here. The movie I wanted to see was playing at many cinemas but I wanted to support a mom and pop place so I came here. Things first went wrong when I attempted to purchase a ticket from a machine outside. Machine took my money but sadly would not administer the ticket. I alerted them and their solution (because they didn't think the machine had accepted my money) was to buy a second ticket and then they would reimburse me if I would email them. Because they were confident the ticket was not sold, as the printer seemed to be working in the machine. I asked them to check again to see if I'd purchased the ticket as I was confident I had. And guess what? I had. Funny how the customer turns out to be right sometimes. I mentioned they might want to put a sign out to alert other customers and the guy was like "yeah I was about to do that" but in a kind of snotty way. He huffily told me to leave and not come back until 15 minutes before the film. So I killed the time grocery shopping. I did purchase a can of coke and a few cans of soup. When I returned for the film I was shocked that the guy at the door took my entire bag with my entire groceries. I get not wanting me to enter with soda - petty as that is - but do you think I'm going to cook soup for your audience? No other theater does this, not IFC, not Union Square's theaters, not the little Kent theater on Coney Island Avenue. It's a gross policy. You got my $14 for the film, be happy with that. Listen, whether or not you take my can of coke I'm still not buying your overpriced concessions, so all you get is a dehydrated customer. The guy took my ticket and tore off the seat number so I didn't know where I was sitting. I vaguely recalled sitting at seat number 6, but there was no 6, so I sat at 5. Then someone else said it was their seat. I had to meet with the manager again. Turns out they sold me a seat that did not exist and mislabeled the numbers of the seats at the theater. Did anyone apologize? Silly rabbit, politeness is for other people. The theater was also really cold. The bathroom had an odd layout that meant everyone was in everyone's face. I'm giving the place two stars instead of one because they have a cute theater trailer from the 1990s that tells you to turn off your pagers. I appreciate nostalgia. Came here to see Get Out. I chose this theatre because to me they had the cheapest prices to see a movie in Brooklyn. $9 for a matinee before 5pm. Compared to spending $14 or $20 (really?) at nearby theatres I'll take this one! I have no complaints really, this theatre was not as bad as people described. The staff were friendly and efficient. The theatre seats were slightly uncomfortable though. Sound quality was AMAZING! Best I've heard in a theatre in a very long time! Lobby is very tiny but you're not there long so who cares. Nice oldie movie house in a nice location. I wanted to see a particular movie and this was where I was directed. A little far from my house, but an easy drive. A small entrance or lobby area accommodates the concession area and restroom. The theaters are long and medium sized with the older seating chairs. What I liked is that the arrangement of the seating, at least on the left side is sort of staggered.in a curvilinear mode. This provides fair viewing to the screen. This particular movie was an artsy, animated film about a young ballerina. The audience was filled with families and their aspiring youngsters. At the end, they were imitating the steps and giving the rest of us a free performance. I will keep an eye on their showings, because I want to come back. Staff was friendly and nice. read more

Came here to see Incredibles 2 over the Summer and I must say this was on of the smallest theaters I've ever been to. That's not necessarily a bad thing because it made the viewing more intimate. They don't really make theaters designed that way anymore. You purchase your ticket outside of the venue versus inside. It took a moment to realize that but once I did, I was directed straight ahead into the theater. I decided to use the restroom prior to showtime and left a mini black backpack in there accidentally. Fortunately one of the staff members came into the theater and announced that they found the bag. After a brief description, they handed the bag over and I was relieved. Definitely a pleasant experience overall and I don't see why wouldn't I want to come back here for another time. read more

Seeing a film at Cobble Hill Cinemas is like stepping back in time, or stepping a few hundred miles into Middle America (which are essentially the same thing, in my limited experience with time travel and flyover states). For gods' sakes, the pre-movie slides still ask you to turn off your pagers. I haven't had a pager since me, Poot and Wallace were slangin' in the Pit for them Barksdale boys.* In any case, Cobble Hill is better in just about every conceivable way than the Court Street multiplex a few blocks to the north. Their prices are better (particularly the matinees), the film selection is better, the surrounding bars/restaurants for pre/post movie drinks/eats are better, and there is a distinct lack of screaming at the screen by the patrons. One warning though: Don't get the nachos, because much like most movie theater nachos, they are repulsive. And if you get them to share with your date and realize their repulsiveness, she might get irrationally angry at you when she feels ill because you "forced" her to eat all of them by herself when really she was just as capable of not eating the nachos. The truth is that she's just jealous of your superior palate that screamed at you not to eat the repulsive neon cheese because in actuality, it is not cheese, but vile dreck that is unfit to serve to humans. _____________ * Unless that was in The Wire, and I never actually had a pager. I have a semi-soft spot in my heart for Cobble Hill Cinemas. Apparently many years ago, it was called the Rio (I found this fun fact online) whereupon it closed and then re-opened later as Cobble Hill Cinema. I've been seeing movies here for years. It has that nostalgic and small town feeling to it. Standing on the corner of Court & Butler Streets, Cobble Hill Cinema always set itself apart from the unkempt Regal Cinema farther north on Court Street. Reason being is due to the fact that they run more intellectual, indie and foreign movies which in turn attracts a different audience. Don't be fooled--at the premiere showing of a new movie, just about every seat will be occupied in a given theater room. And we all know that nobody wants the dreaded first 3 rows (at least I don't). It's recommended to arrive earlier on such nights. Cobble Hill Cinema is not without fault. It's in dire need of a facelift as the interior appears tired and worn out. Or perhaps, that's what makes it charming. However, during a recent visit to see a movie, I was pleased to observe the replacement of those tired, red fabric seats (whose springs had sprung) with new pleather seating. I am assuming and hoping all seats in the entire theater have been replaced. These seats are not plush but it's clean and comfy enough. As far as prices go, Cobble Hill Cinema is still the best bargain around town even though they've increased their rates. Movies are $9 all day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Every movie before 5 PM all week is also $9. Regularly priced movies has shot up to $12. Not long ago, it was $10. Still not bad compared to $15 I've been paying in Manhattan. 3-D movies are $14. There are also senior and kids' rates. About the concession stand: its small, oftentimes creates a line. Expect the same variety of snacks (heart clogging buttered popcorn, soda, coffee, tea, candy, chocolate and nachos, etc.) at the usual outrageous movie concession stand prices. Shhhh, I carry a granola bar or my own snack in my bag sometimes. In summary, this cinema is a welcomed fixture on Court Street and home to many avid movie goers. As a Brooklyn native, you might find it weird that I just visited this movie theater for the first time, but in my defense, I live pretty far out. This movie theater is a throwback - it's been there for a while and you can tell. The ticketing booth is right out front with one person selling tickets and on a busy night, you might find yourself actually waiting outside the theater with a crowd because the entrance is so small. On a Friday night, there were 2 people working the snack counter and they seemed to work pretty quickly. A small popcorn and a bottle of water will set you back $9.50, but that's to be expected at movie theaters. The counter looked like it needed a good cleaning though. Actually, the whole place needs a bit of a facelift, to be honest. I find it charming that before the show, there is a reminder to shut off your beepers and pagers. I wasn't alive in the 80s, but I felt like I was transported there! It's nostalgic and funny, kind of happy they haven't changed this to "silence your cell phones." The seats were comfy enough too. No complaints here. With the price of $12 for a movie instead of the usual $17+ that other NYC and BK movie theaters charge, I can definitely say I'd come back here again. read more

This tiny no frills theater is just fine. They have a good selection of indie movies, and like most such theaters, they have pretty small, uncomfortable seats, with no stadium seating. You are also guaranteed to be surrounded by exclusively old people and hipsters, due to the low prices and the neighborhood, respectively. Aside from the above mentioned much cheaper prices than most theaters in NYC, and the pretty good location in terms of some good places to eat around here (if you happen to be in Brooklyn for some reason), there aren't many other positives. The concession stand is also way cheaper (just $9 for the Super Combo of the tub of popcorn and the large soda - though, the larges here are way smaller than the larges at chains). Unfortunately, the popcorn was super stale. Luckily I have a very thick-skinned wife who didn't mind missing the first few seconds of the movie and ran out and had them exchange our popcorn for some from a hot, freshly popped batch. I can only imagine how long the first batch was sitting there as it was nearly inedible. Even with the new batch though, it obviously tasted good since it was hot popcorn, but it was a little too greasy and overwhelming even for me. It is also fun to see the intro video that is literally straight out of the 90's (not 80's, there is a pager references in there). But I think I'd still much rather stick to Angelika or Landmark in the city for my indie movies. read more

Just my luck that in a 60% empty theater, the idiots managed to find me anyway -- first some tool wearing a hat obliviously, then a drunk/high couple I had to shush through the first hour of Blade Runner repeatedly. Simply can't compare it to Alamo or some of the big chains - screens are smaller, theaters are smaller, seats are very basic. Simple concession stand that had hot-dogs, nachors, popcorn, soda. But it does have good prices - recent weekday film cost me $18 for 1 adult and 1 child - not bad in NYC, quite cheap. Saw Christopher Robin here. Theater was small, but screen size and sound quality ok for size of room. Seats very basic but not uncomfortable (on a narrow side - I was fine, but a fat person may have issues). A million years later but I finally made my way to Cobble Hill Cinemas on a Tuesday afternoon to watch Parasite. I practically had the theater to myself. (There were 2 other people who I couldn't even hear breathing--they had me beat for most quiet). I love the intimate, old-timey vibes of that movie theater. Four stars because the popcorn was hella stale for a $5.50 small size. Also, the attendants could've used some liveliness. I was tempted to burst into a farewell song on my way out because I said "good night" on my way out, but they appeared to ready to get up out of there and into their beds. The bathroom was quite smelly of old urine so I'd recommend some tending to that on the down time, where there seems to be a lot of on that early Tuesday evening. read more

Not a very happy camper at this movie theater. This was my first time there and probably my last. The bathrooms were not clean and somewhat small. I guess I'm use to bigger theaters as well. The minute we came into the theater we saw popcorn all over the floor, cups, and old bubblegum stuck to the floors. I'm just being honest and was disappointed. My friend came out with a backache because the seats were so uncomfortable and you did not have enough leg space. I was tossing and turning myself trying to get comfortable. One plus was that the staff at the concession was friendly. I believe they need to remodel this place. I wish I could have said better things but I had to be honest. read more

Sorry I can only give this place one star, not really... I get it has some history, etc., but I cannot stand the following from an old school movie theater: (1) Had to wait in line OUTSIDE the movie theater before the movie started, and mind you, it was in the rain. (2) Only three bathroom stalls in Ladies restroom, for the entire movie theater. I have never seen lines that long for bathrooms. (3) Obviously this is an old school movie theater, but I really do not get how back in the days people could see the screen when the seats in front of you were not that much lower than you. I had to change seats twice because the people in front of me happened to have long torso. (4) I sat relatively close to the door, so unfortunately I could hear some kids crying and some adults laughing, in the lobby... Anyways, kudos to people who maintain this place so well. Is this review #800? I think this is review #800. Cobble Hill Cinemas has its charm and its place in the movie theater hierarchy. Go to the Court Street Regal if you want to see something in IMAX or the latest blockbuster. Go to Cobble Hill Cinemas if you want a more intimate setting with smaller (dare I say, Indie) movies. The theaters upstairs are super tiny. There's literally nowhere to sit to be dead center with the screen. The air conditioner turns on and off, which makes listening to quiet dialog difficult. It's also so small that the struggles of someone opening a box of candy can be heard by everybody in the theater. But hey, they play an 80s style intro before the movie, and the place is decorated with old school posters and wallpaper. If you want to impress a date... you probably shouldn't go to the movies anyway. But CHC is definitely a unique experience at least. For better or for worse... read more

There's so much to love about Cobble Hill Cinemas, especially for someone like me who is having a mid life crisis at the ripe old age of 32 years old! You see, I've lived here my whole life and with everything around me changing so fast i seem to be grasping at anything in the borough of Kings that reminds me of my youth. Cobble Hill Cinemas, please enter the review stage right... I've wanted to see "The Artist" for quite some time, and my go-to theater in Sheepshead Bay never decided to add it to their rotation. This past President's Day was the perfect opportunity for me to see it so i begrudgingly woke up early on my day off to go see it here. Why begrudgingly? No online advanced ticketing scares me, looking for a free parking spot anywhere near Court Street scares me, and the fact that the theater is smaller than Trader Joes scares the CRAP out of me. (They do have 3D capability, which surprised me!) But i did it anyway, and it was the first time i stepped into Cobble Hill Cinemas since my dad brought me to see Terminator 2 many many years ago. It was just as i remembered it: the smallest lobby area in the history of cinema! If it were not 12 noon on a holiday i probably would have been on a line out the door! I went to get some popcorn and soda and to my delight, i paid &7.50 for BOTH! That's about as much as one item anywhere else! So i take my seat, and i get blown away by something i had not seen in two decades, the "opening" welcome message from the theater. You know how they tell you not to text while the move is on? This place reminds you to "turn your pagers off" before the film....wow i loved that so much! Along with the early 90's neon graphics in the message. So they have 6 theaters in this tiny space, but it works. Their theaters are the size of the mini versions at the UA establishments (you know, the theaters where they park the movies that are a week from being removed from rotation). Either way, it didn't bother me, i got into my seat, which was comfortable, and enjoyed a movie that will probably sweep the Oscars this weekend (remember where you hear it first!). Bottom line, Cobble Hill Cinemas serves so many purposes for moviegoers. They are affordable, they offer films that are mostly out of rotation at other theaters and most importantly they show all of us that the little guy can perform just as well as the big boys. I simply adore this movie theater - they (obviously) don't make them like this anymore, but 'they' also seem to go out of their way to find ones like this, tear them down and turn them into a multiplex (or a 5th bank in a 2-block radius). It looks as if it hasn't been changed or updated in 30 years (in a charming, quirky, cared-for way - not a "hasn't been cleaned in 10 years" way), all the way down to the awesome pre-movie intro, replete with '80s-style video and graphics - worth the (cheap by city standards) price of admission on its own. I go out of my way to catch a film here rather than a closer theater if at all possible. (And it's in a great neighborhood surrounded by cool pre/post movie dinner/drink options.) I hope this gem doesn't suffer the fate of most smaller/independent movie theaters in this city. read more

Came here because it was the least expensive movie theater relatively nearby in Brooklyn. Pretty much what I expected from a non-chain movie theater - laid back atmosphere, no crazy lines, a little rundown, small theaters, fewer food options. The seats are clean and comfy, but the armrests are awkwardly short, so the drink holder is situated mid-forearm. I really enjoyed some quirky things like murals of classic movie scenes (including several menacing villains and monsters which I'm sure must terrify kids) and a "welcome to the theater" reel that features some wild 1990s CGI and warns you to silence your pager. Great throwback. They also have a self-serve butter dispenser, so you can grease up your popcorn as needed. read more

You would think that if you have a small establishment customer experience would be important to the staff but no, apparently not. My boyfriend and I came to this theater only due to its proximity to my job. When we arrived the directions weren't clear for where to get your tickets printed if you'd purchased online, so the staff member sent us back outside to print them. After the movie many of the movie goers, including us, were waiting inside for our ubers to arrive since it was cold and pouring rain. Cue "Andrew", the apparent manager, who rudely announces that everyone hurry up and leave so that there is room for people to come in. There were two people who came in the entire time we were waiting for a car. Staff here are rude and unfriendly. Take your business elsewhere! read more
