It wouldn't surprise me if this is the next area to start seeing increased development and an influx of people seeking less expensive real estate. The main commercial strip of the Laurel District is pretty seedy -- a bunch of awful to mediocre restaurants, dive bars, more beauty salons & clothing boutiques than 2-3 blocks might seem to support. The brightest spots seem to be the hardware store, Anasa yoga studio and Peter's Kettle Corn. The Laurel has no farmer's market. Available grocery stores (two) are a bit overpriced with produce that seems rarely cleaned over and often a bit swampy with a poor selection of organic. The Redwood Safeway is quite possibly the most awful Safeway I have ever visited -- I first went there about 7-8 years ago and was absolutely appalled. Now I'm just annoyed if I have to go in there (like to get ice or something) -- service is bad, produce is poor, and let's face it -- Safeway barely has anything that resembles "food" and nothing local. All of Lincoln Square is going to be undergoing renovation (a subject for another review). The most highly rated coffee shop smells like cleaning products and going in is like going to a private club where you weren't invited (after waiting for a bit -- not looking at my cell phone -- and being ignored as the people behind the counter carried on conversations with others, I left). There are constant reports of people losing cash as they leave ATMs, stories of burglaries at vacant houses and door-kick ins while people are home come up on the neighborhood lists every week. The neighbors are VERY good about paying attention to stray dogs and cats -- but even they are speeding and running red lights between their houses and the freeway. Watch where you walk in the Laurel and Allendale -- no cars stop, even when 2 or more cars approach a 4 way stop (I've seen the drivers act as though it's a de facto round-about). You really do take your life in your hands if you walk anywhere in this neighborhood. Take extra care on 35th Ave/Redwood -- the speed limit is 30 but people usually speed at 50+ Restaurants -- I just can't even get into this subject without sounding completely negative. Of course the Laurel District doesn't have the same caliber of restaurants as Temescal/Rockridge/Piedmont -- yet. What we have is very poor choices almost like being in a food desert: Americanized Chinese food, and a lot of standard American diet choices like greasy pizza, fried chicken, doughnuts and (ugh) hot dogs? In the place of a discount packaged grocery store on MacArthur, a "Planet Fitness" is going in soon. It will be interesting to see if this helps bring up the quality of what is offered on the cluttered, redundant retail strip. Until then -- I'll spend most of my money elsewhere, especially when it comes to dining and groceries.

She needed to see a card of mine, so I gave it to her. Then she gave it back and said she needed to see the name. I turned it over and held it up and she kind of acted nonplussed. So I set it face up on the closed laptop and she freaked out. "Don't put that on my personal things." I was so shocked that I immediately apologized. But then she stayed cold, rude and strange. This opaque, humorless, poor communicator is a very bad choice to have a front facing person to the public. I felt shamed and vaguely humiliated that she seemed to be insinuating my trying to give her what she was asking for with the card was some grave offense. It was also featured in the intro to "Full House" (aired from 1987 to 1995) but once you get your photo from the hill, what else is there to do... I found out about the Fnnch Pop-Up Museum by accident and the exhibit is temporarily hosted in one of the Painted Ladies house. Fnnch is a local street artist and the exhibit featured his Honey Bear paintings over the last 10 years. You know, those classic plastic squeezable honey container with a spout cap lid you can find in any grocery store. There are 116 paintings in all including ones he has created since his very first in January 2015. The exhibit includes a timeline with photos and descriptions of the origins of most bears. Some were designed for murals, some for current events and some for commissions and at one point San Francisco became so oversaturated with fnnch's honey bears. Honestly, I didn't really pay much attention to the honey bears during my trips to San Francisco but now that I know the background and history of it I actually try to spot them while driving in the City now. Found 3 honey bears at Duboce Park Cafe on Duboce Avenue. I also wanted to experience a unique opportunity to see inside one of the Painted Ladies which was a treat. The USCG cutter tour was better than the US Navy battleship tour, in our opinion. We also saw cool military helicopters and other equipment, pretty cool. Visitors were able to climb on board and tour the beautiful three-masted ship though there was quite a line for this which we opted not to wait in. It was still great to view up close. We also spent a couple hours enjoying the lively Fleet Fest at Fisherman's Wharf, with a car show, various vendor booths on site, waterfront views of ships passing by, and music filling the air. The live entertainment took place right next to the Skystar ferris wheel, with a Frank Sinatra impersonator performing on stage in the afternoon, followed by a free concert by Michelle Lambert, a folk-pop singer, songwriter, and musician, along with her band. It was great that from our seats in front of the stage, we could actually view the airshow too. I've enjoyed the Blue Angels' performance in past years, and I'm also familiar with how horrific traffic can be in the city during this event. This year, traffic was still bad, but not nightmarish like before, the federal shutdown probably contributing to this. The weather was perfect on Saturday, we got a lot of steps in walking around and along the Embarcadero, and we had a fun time in the laid back atmosphere with manageable crowds and positive vibes all around.
