As a former employee, I found the director's management style of micro-managing the teachers instead of working on the imperative task of watching what the enrollment numbers are doing (which determine the financial bottom-line and how many teachers are needed). I see there is still a very high rate of turnover - which shows this problem has not been rectified. The Rev. Michael P. Barham, the Vicar of the Holy Family Episcopal Church whom is supposed to be the head authority, I found to be conveniently out of the office whenever help was sought about the ongoing problems. I found this to be very disappointing as a Vicar/ clerical/pastor level, when he was needed he was not to be found.

My son has been attending there for about 6 months now, and he's grown in so many ways. He makes friends easily wherever we go; he offered to set the table out of the blue; he's great at putting on his own clothing, socks and shoes, etc.. And more important than any of that, he is having fun, and clearly feels safe and well cared-for while there. The physical environment is so inviting. It's an old farmhouse, repurposed into a church and school. Very homey. Very comfortable. And the grounds are spacious, well-kept, and private. The kids can run, and bike, play ball, and use the large play structure they have, and they do - every day features at least some outdoor play. It should be noted, that while the school is on the grounds of an Episcopal Church, it's not a religious school. All religious and non-religious backgrounds are welcomed and will be comfortable at HFCC. The school's curriculum is based upon the Reggio Emilia approach for project-based, child-led learning. It's the only preschool on the Coast that does Reggio, and it's really special... not your average one-size-fits-most ABCs/123s while seated at a tiny desk experience... so much more creative and engaging! Lastly, the parents of HFCC kids seem to be universally excellent folks. I've really enjoyed getting to know them during drop-offs, and at after-hours events (fundraising, volunteer work-days, informational meetings, etc.). HFCC is a lovely community, for both our children, and ourselves.

The program is nicely balanced, which has been great for my kids, with free play time and more structured activities. The kids really enjoy each other, and their teachers, and they are taught to be compassionate and kind. This clearly comes directly from the consistent patient guidance from each teacher. I can't say enough about how great this school has been for my kids and for our family! We love Picasso!

The staff is fantastic across the board, which is of course the most important thing. We just had some friends transfer their child to Picasso from one of the other local highly acclaimed preschools and they are blown away by how great the teachers and kids are at Picasso. All the kids get along, there is no fighting, the kids are polite, etc. I have literally spent hundred of hours there over the last few years and am amazed at the kids at Picasso. This is not a coincidence - the kids are great because the direction, care, and instruction they are receiving is top notch. On a superficial note, I agree with the other reviewer that the facility itself could use some cosmetic upgrades, but the location is hard to beat - the children get to play outside with a view up and down the entire San Mateo coast. I would suggest that if you want to check out Picasso you bring your child there for a few hour trial run and see how they do. Having spent plenty of time on the playground watching kids play I can confirm that the teachers are not helicopter teachers out there because they don't have to be - the kids are well behaved and fantastic - now if I could just get my kids to be as well behaved at home : ). As a side note, Picasso is a feeder school for many of the top private schools in the area should you want to continue in private school for primary school. I know that both Seacrest on the coast, and Notre Dame in Belmont find Picasso kids to be well prepared.

It is now called the Coastside Child Development Center…read more My sons have gone here and I have to say, this is a great center. Let me tell you, I was NOT eager to put my kids in a "center". But, after trying home care, I needed something more stable. I was very hesitant, and was critical the entire time. But, I tried it and I am very glad I did. The people there are fantastic - warm, fun, nice and LOVE kids. Heck, a few even came to my sons birthday party one weekend. That is how much they love their kids. I felt like I can talk to them, have them listen and we can have an active and engaging conversation about my child. They will do whatever I ask and they are totally approachable. I do have to say, there was a period of time a few years ago when the center went through some employee turnover but since that ended, the center seems to have been doing great. If you are looking for a center for you infant, toddler or preschooler, I can't recommend this center enough.

I looked EVERYWHERE on the coast for care for our 11 month old and I really did not want to put the kiddo in a day care center. We were looking for 3x a week care and it was impossible to find. I can not tell you how happy I am that I found this place! The teachers at this center are FANTASTIC! They are incredibly involved and are very easy to talk to and they truly love the kids. They have an incredible play area outside the kids love and the center is very clean. The kids love it! The director of the center is very responsive and has been really easy to work with. I have been really happy with the center and my little boy is so happy every time I pick him up. I can not say enough nice things about this place or the people that work here. Yes, you will pay a bit more for child care at a center than a home day care...but the extra price has been worth it.

When we first toured it was magical walking along the trails and stopping under the canopies of trees to read, draw, explore and the program is thoughtfully prepared with learning stations and developmental opportunities. They make all of us (kids and parents) feel seen and heard, and they really make the kids feel special. Communication is huge for me, and from the moment I reached out to Pamela, she has been quickly responsive, communicative, and always takes the time to answer questions. Nature school provides so many wonderful outside of the box learning opportunities (for the kids, but also for me!). They learn through play and observation and teamwork, and in the 5 months my daughter has attended, I've noticed her communication about feelings and body awareness has really improved, as well as her problem solving skills. I was certainly a little nervous to send my daughter out in the rain, but I have to say, the rainy days have truly been her favorite school days! The kids LOVE to play in the mud! My toddler likes to hang out and play too! It really is true what they say; if you are properly clothed the weather doesn't seem so bad. The pick up/drop off location is breathtakingly beautiful and I feel pretty grateful that I get to experience it alongside my kids. And the best part for me? The teachers send a weekly report, complete with pictures, about what they all did throughout the week. They include the songs they sang, the mindfulness activities, quotes from the kids, the books they read, etc. I look forward to it every week. I hope that I can encourage more families to try it out, because this school is a blessing.
