He said that they started around 9:10, waiting for the children to come. They line up at 2:45 to walk to wait for parents. The first day he called me, and I said it wasn't 3:00, but they had them waiting in 90 degrees weather for parents. Then, I get there, and they make me go back to my car, while my son waits, to get my identification. He's 13, he may know who his mom is. On the 4th day, I find out that he could have checked himself out each day. NOBODY TOLD US! So, if you start at 9:10, end at 2:45, and have an hour of nothing (SEL) time...just have a shorter day filled with, um, camp stuff. Neg #3: Children have to give their pronouns! I wrote the camp, but they said they don't have to...NOT TRUE...they had to. Stop the insanity. They have this crap thrown down their throats in school. Let camp, just be camp! They have an hour of SEL. Mind you the counselors are junior college kids, not trained to support issues that may come up in SEL. Also, it is ROBOTICS! Neg #4: They called them kiddos...okay, but really?!

I looked into many different summer camps for my son during that time and came across Camp Edmo. I read their website and thought it was a good idea to put my son in their summer camp (for 3 weeks). My son was 5 years old and had completed Kindergarten during that time. Make a long story short, my son completely hated Camp Edmo. He begged me not to go every morning. I kept asking him why, he said it was boring, the counselors didn't help him build anything during class, and he spent a lot of the time just sitting there. Again, my son was 5 year old and shy at the time. A counselor should of helped him build something (since it was a stem, engineering camp for small kids). Instead my son, everyday, would bring a bag containing engineering supplies untouched. Camp Edmo costs and arm and a leg, counselors should have just done their jobs and help the kids build. Oh and if you send your kid to Camp Edmo, know they will get super dirty. I think they have them sit on the street or dirt, cause my kid's pants were always dirty. This year, I'm glad my son's school will be offering summer camp. Thank goodness for that, because Camp Edmo is one camp I will not be sending my kid to again.

That's how I feel about Tinkering school. My Son,6yrs old, literally talks my ear off after coming home from here. He talk about the human size Hungry-Hungry Hippo he's making out of pulleys and wood, about the working Air hockey table and how good he is getting at using real tools. Joshua and Nathan and everyone else there are kind, attentive and passionate about what they do. I leave feeling like I'm actually enriching my child's life instead of just leaving him with somebody to babysit him. Registration was easy and They are pretty good at getting back to my emails. Not sure why the bad review here said it was hard. I guess I'm just good at using a computer.

Since the camp is an extension of Brightworks School, there are kids who know the ropes and are familiar with the way things work. Unfortunately, the camp isn't set up to really introduce kids who are new to the process of building. Every day our son came home and said he hadn't built anything because he didn't know what to build. Yes, some kids will dive right in and come up with something. Others need instruction, and that's normal. Brightworks has a reputation for being child-led to a very high degree, but I take issue with them not teaching our son about the materials and tools so he could feel comfortable and build something, which he did do on the two final days. When I asked for someone to give him some guidance or ideas, I was told they don't like to give the kids ideas because then they all do the same thing. Yes, yes, I agree, but that applies to the kids with experience, not a kid who's been there 2 days and has no idea what to do. That takes the concept of child-led too far. A school friend was with him at camp and they reported that the instructors were snappy with the kids. Sigh In addition, on their day at Crissy Field, he returned home with the worst sunburn he has ever had. When I inquired about why nobody had put sunscreen on him, I was told that they had given the kids sunscreen and he had applied it himself. He is not yet 7. He is not responsible for sunscreen application to protect his skin from damage. Adults are responsible for that. Even if he takes off his hat, it's the adults who have to enforce the safety rules. Given our experience, we asked if we could un-enroll him for the following week and get a refund. They declined, much to our disappointment.

It was my kids first time away from home & one of the first things they said when we picked them up after a week long camp was that they would love to go back next year, no hesitation. My teen and pre-teen had the time of their lives backpacking and swimming in mountain lakes during…read morethis year's Sierra Session. It was a TON of fun. So many lakes to swim in and so many nights solely amongst the trees and the stars. They made new friends and reunited with old ones from the previous year (pre-pandemic). Many counselors and trip leaders attended Chrysalis as youngsters and have astonishingly returned. It says a lot about the camp, its director Lee Tempkin, and the warm, nurturing, exciting and educational environment they create. Two of my youngest children also attended the Mendocino Session in 2019, their first time away from home. Well, truth be told, I am not sure they missed us *too* much with all the adventures and friendships to be had! Everyone helped prepare and cook meals. The also learned to work in teams around camp. Real world lessons. Swimming, hiking, canoing, catamaran sailing, tidepooling and even rollicking in the sand dunes... wow! This is a *real* adventure and a *real* experience. It is tent camping in a base camp and exploring the wonder that surrounds. Awesome fun and creative activities abound. Nature at its best, making epic summer memories.

They have made life-long friends through this camp and they have grown into confident young women. The dance skills they learn and practice are challenging and the teachers really get the best out of the campers while making it fun. While returning from an outing, on the bus, one of the instructors decided to prompt my daughter to take a shower by announcing it to the entire bus. This lead to embarrassment as well a ridicule from her fellow campers for the remainder of the week. Before this camp my daughter loved dance more than anything. I thought dance camp would help her self-esteem, but instead it destroyed her spirit. I gave a two instead of a one because the dance camp did seem to be well organized.

They have a ton of fun playing a variety of sports and games while strengthening their bodies. Their leadership is the head of the Dept. of Kinesiology at SFSU - which means they are learning solid skills. If you want to get your child in the pool every day, this is a great option. But maybe you want him to play tennis. That is also on the daily menu. As is martial arts and team sports. The bottom line is that real skills will be learned. We signed up for all six weeks. My kids started camp having never held a tennis racket, now they are serving the ball and playing with confidence. All of this with university level facilities! It's easy, easy drop off and pick up. Just pack a few things and lunch is provided. This is the most rewarding, stress free summer my kids and we parents have ever had!
