This is for my weekly camp experience. I personally liked it for my daughter, and not having to worry about lunches. We've done two camps for her so far, and she actually enjoyed it. I wish we got photos of her, but understandable with how many kids attend.

all day long! You'll be there...all day long but the kids will have fun...all day long. This place really has something for every child. Kids will love it here and will never want to leave. As a matter of fact, you might have to drag em outta there after 8 hrs of fun kicking and crying at closing, lol. Theres two large outdoor playgrounds, theres other outside play structures like a train, theres indoor buildings with different activities like painting and playing with race cars or even an indoor kids kitchen. Theres iceless ice skating, and I can't explain it, you just have to try it yourself. And as a bonus, theres a snackbar with sandos, pizza, coffee and cookies. One day after my battery recharges and the weather warms up, we'll def be back for more. This place is a hidden gem and the kids had an absolute blast.

This spot is located on Fort Baker with a unique campus-like layout of multiple buildings & outdoor areas to walk through. There's a lot to see & do here, mostly geared towards younger kids & some things for slightly older kids to still appreciate. A couple of areas were specifically for those under 42" tall. It's probably not going to be as interesting for those past 2nd/3rd grade. Depending on age, some activities will be hit or miss. There are plenty of hands-on indoor activities including a fishing boat to play on, large scale music box mechanism, large train track table, race car ramp, play kitchen, & arts. Some of the many outdoor activities are a woodworking tool area, a sand area, large foam shapes to build with, & a wooden train to climb into. A large playground area has activities like a boat & different structures to climb, a mini tide pool, cave, dump truck gravel area, mud play area, & trail with viewpoints. Another playground has 3 large treehouse structures. Some notes-- You get an amazing view of the Golden Gate Bridge! Staff was helpful enough when paying our entrance fee. I didn't encounter many staff members maintaining the spaces. There is a small area with toys to purchase in the visitor services building. I appreciated big hand sanitizer bottles on the walls of the indoor buildings. The restrooms were decently maintained. Some of the materials & furniture in areas were worn & dingy. One activity was broken. You're going to be at the mercy of the weather since so many of the activities are outside & you have to walk from building to building. As in any kids play space, you're going to need to negotiate dealing with the behavior of other kids/parents & abilities to share & take turns. There's a lot of neat fun to experience (more than I could mention in this review) for younger kids.

Sept 2025 long weekend ( Sat) Get here early ~ 1030 am to maximize time Plenty of kids activities, from obstacle courses for the young kids, to toddler activities The Paint splash room is a brilliant idea ! Cafe onsite has reasonably good food and drink options Family friendly and you can spend all day here - 4 pm is a hard stop museum close time - I wish they had extended times in summer/fall

Amazing view from a look out spot.

The Bay Area discovery museum is such a gem. It is mostly outdoors. There are plenty of things for children of all ages to do, but this museum is geared more towards toddlers in my opinion. We had a nice afternoon here, we got our complementary tickets from the discoverandgo website with our library card! They have free parking on site. They also have a café, with plenty of rest rooms.

Every time I'm in the bay visiting my sister, I love to take my kids out to enjoy some sun and play. Here at BADM, It's like a big kindergarten classroom filled with so many kids ready to exert all their energy. They have stations where in each building has a unique play experience. There's an iceless skating area where the kids basically slide around in their socks on the slippery ice like floor. There's a how things work area where you can see the inside of a sink or washer. There's outdoor sand pit, boat, playground, chalk, paint, and much more to peak a child's creativity. All whilst it could be a bit overwhelmingly fun, their bubble machine is constantly pushing out bubbles making it a tad bit whimsical. There is a little cafe with all the kids favorites on their menu if their little tummies get hungry from all the activities; cheese pizza, nuggets and mac n cheese with milk or juice. There was a bit of renovation the last we visited so it's ever changing!

Stayed nearby for Mother's Day weekend and was recommended to take the family here. The suggestion was greatly appreciated as the whole family had a wonderful time! There were activities for my 2 and 4 year old and mom and I loved playing with them as well. We made candles, climbed, made wire figures, played with bubbles, music machines, and there was an awesome spot for the younger kids to climb inside also. We spent about 4 hours there before leaving and there was much more yet to be done. If in the area with littles, recommend this spot for a long day of entertainment.

Museum geared towards younger kids with science, art and climbing activities. Excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the free parking is a plus. Entry is a bit on the higher side, and expect to spend at least a couple of hours to go through all the activities.

Love this place! They rotate exhibits and always seem to be a great hit with my toddler. Today we discovered story time here l and did a bug hunt. Such a lovely asset. I wish there were more of these in the Bay Area.

This is the best location if you don't want to go to the museum itself but spend the day outside. A very different view of the Golden Gate. The museum is our favorite place in the Bay Area to bring our toddler to spend the day out. The bubble and the little water stream part will always attract the tots. The train section is another favorite part of ours. We are now member of this place and hoping to visit it once a month. Perfect to play in sand/ perfect to understand how the light/sound works and create some art for the young ones. Plenty of outdoor play structures as well. It would be nice to have two adults free entry with family membership when the grandparents visit!

Great place for kids from little tot ages to grade school. There are lots of different play areas, activities (story time, music time, painting, etc.), both indoor and outdoor. All staff are incredibly friendly and helpful with the kiddos.

The Bay Area Discovery Museum is a paradise for young kids! We love taking our kids here and they always ask to come back. We love the focus on STEAM and the variety of rooms to play. This past visit, there was the art print shop, the "how stuff works" room, and iceless skating. The iceless skating was definitely fun for us parents! We also love the many outdoor activities to offer, like the different climbing structures, water play, sand and mud area. It's really a chance for a kids to climb, play, learn and explore. There are plenty of bathrooms around the area. For food, you can bring your own snacks/lunch or buy from snack shop. There some tables but they get filled during lunch time. There's also a little gift shop to buy some goodies. Tickets are pricey as they include parents and kids, but there is a chance to use the amount you paid towards a membership if bought on the same day. And that alone felt worth it!

Visited for the first time it is a great place to explore for families and children of all ages to enjoy. So much to do and learn that really keeps children active and exploring. There is a nice café that offers snacks during the visit and there are picnic tables to enjoy. I would definitely come back to this museum. I also appreciate that they offer various discounts for families and also members of other museums.

Ask the Community - Bay Area Discovery Museum

Serious about the parking area is it safe? I heard there have been lots of cars broken into?

We didn't see any vandalism or broken glass when we went to visit. Our car was just fine, but we never leave anything of value anyway. We also have tinted windows & cover the back where we put our stuff. I felt safe.

    Are masks still required indoors?

No they aren't, haven't been for at least a year

    Is there EV charging available?

As of may 2023, I haven't seen any in their main parking lot.

    Are masks required?

Outdoors, face coverings are optional for all visitors. Indoors, all visitors 2 years and older are required to wear a face covering regardless of vaccination status. Face Shields are not an acceptable face covering (for children or adults).

Do the outdoor activities/playground area close when the museum does? Can we play outside after hours?

Yes they close when the museum Closes

Last time I had visited was more than a decade ago, so checking the place out this past weekend I was glad to find that it hasn't lost its charm. The various rooms and displays provide a detailed history of Walt Disney and his dream of building his beloved amusement park come to life. Never knew his dream started with his love of trains! What's more, the museum setup makes you feel like you're actually at Disneyland. Thoughtfully curated and full of color, the place was a joy to explore on multiple levels. It included interactive elements, exhibits on synchronizing cartoon sound, a reproduction of an animator's desk, details about Walt's collaborations with artists and musicians for films like Fantasia, and captivating artworks and animated displays of his classic works, such as a whole section centered on the history and influence of Snow White. I was especially a fan of the Mary Poppins display, which featured studio story sketches, film posters, and photos of the actors with Walt Disney in 1964. I also really enjoyed the current exhibition, "Happiest Place on Earth: The Disneyland Story" in the Lower Lobby and Theater Gallery, which included a film screening of Happiest Place on Earth: Walt's Disneyland (2025) included with the admission price. The exhibit as a whole was quite interesting as someone who used to go to Disneyland multiple times per year (can't splurge like that anymore). I learned about Walt's vision and the evolution of each of the rides at the amusement park, especially some of my faves like the Haunted Mansion with original ideas stemming from a "museum of the weird" that was never built. The venue also offers a cafe with seating (open Thursday through Sunday 11-3pm) and a museum gift shop with plenty of Disney-themed goodies for all ages. Staff was professional and helpful, though not really involved in the self-guided tour. And parking in the area is easy and costs a small fee by the hour, payable by mobile app.

I'd heard about it, but it never quite made it to the top of the list. Today my son suggested we go since admission is free on Saturdays for Bay Area residents, so we stopped by late in the afternoon -- and I was genuinely blown away. That's not an exaggeration. First, parking was easier than expected. The small lots right by the entrance were full, but there's another lot less than a quarter mile down the hill where we found a space without any trouble. Maybe we got lucky, but it was smooth. The setting alone is worth the visit. The museum sits among rolling green hills with views that feel very different from the usual tourist spots. The architecture is striking, and I was surprised to learn the building is now over a century old. The centerpiece collection features works by Auguste Rodin, and seeing so many of his sculptures up close -- in different sizes and forms -- was fascinating. It felt like a real privilege to experience them in person. There are rotating exhibits throughout the year; currently the spotlight is on Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot. I'm not a major art expert, but I still enjoyed learning about their partnership and viewing these Impressionist works. The unexpected highlight was the Spreckels Organ performance. We happened to catch the Saturday 4pm concert -- pure luck. The organ pipes are built into the structure itself, and the hour-long performance was mesmerizing. It's one of those experiences you just have to hear for yourself. Highly recommended. I'll definitely be back.

The history displays were captivating and the gift shop offered so many interesting and quirky items, I could actually go shopping here on a regular day. Staff was readily available on site to answer questions and assist visitors. And there were even food trucks directly in front of the building on a Sunday afternoon in spring.

Once we visited, we just KNEW this was our location. During our tour, we stood in the ceremony spot in the East Wing and asked each other, "is this it?" And yes, is certainly was. A few months later, that spot is where we happily said "I do!" Driving into the Headlands is like entering a magical realm of nature, silence, and openness. The building has such relaxed, artistic vibe. When designing our wedding's look and feel, we were committed to working with its already super cool appeal. The distressed golden walls of the Rodeo Room have such character, making it the perfect backdrop for our Photo Booth selfie station... and they even inspired the texture of our wedding cake! Beyond the fact that we loved the venue, it is especially heartwarming to know that our rental fee is going toward sustaining this artistic organization and its artists, helping it to thrive. The wedding budget is always tricky and a bit painful, but it feels really good to know that chunk of money is going toward a worthy local cause. Being a DIY bride, I really appreciated how exceptionally responsive both the in-house staff who would immediately answer all the weird little questions that kept popping up that I couldn't find in our contract. Oh, and the FOOD!!! Katie Powers, their in-house caterer is an artist. She is exceptionally dedicated to creating local, sustainable, and delicious meals. Although she doesn't provide taste testing, Katie's descriptions and enthusiasm while building our menu together at our in-person meeting was infectious, giving us the confidence that it would be amazing. We opted to have our meal served family-style which really enhanced the sense of community and appreciation for the meal. It is also very special to have an in-house caterer cook from her kitchen with her staff. The service, artistry, and flavors had everyone swooning and diving in for seconds. Our biggest concern was the latrine... the open unisex bathroom that's sort of creepy. However, using our very own living room drapes and some tension rods, we easily sectioned the room off into Men's and Ladies areas. Adding candles, flowers, music, and artsy magnets along the metal stall doors, we turned it around and that military latrine became a cool oasis where everyone felt comfortable... even this bride who appreciated the large stall when negotiating my dress.... Going forward, we are so thankful this magical gem is available to our enjoyment, as we look forward to becoming members and experiencing the works from their artists in residence. For anyone thinking that this may be the venue for you, just like they say when you meet the right one, when you know, you know!

They rented out the family and youth hostels for all their friends and family, and we had the most marveous time. The two of them were artist in residence in 2000 and 2004, and they speak very highly of their experience, so much so that they got married there! The Center for the Arts has art openings, special showings, performances and art residents working/living out there all year long. Check it out or go stay at the hostel some weekend. It's gorgeous out there. It's so tucked away and peaceful in the valley there, yet so close to the city. It's like a little retreat. ----------------- just to paint a picture: THE ARTISTS' STUDIOS The Headlands' buildings are home to nearly 40 studios such as this one, where artists in residence pursue their work and often make it available for the public to view. THE ARCHIVE ROOM Over the years, bits and pieces of the rich military history and the remarkable natural phenomena of the Headlands Center for the Arts have been discovered, uncovered and left behind. The Archive Room contains a collection of these objects. As a testament to the layers of history that we have unearthed, this room contains layers of debris generated by each renovation project. As this place ages and changes, new layers of detritus are added. New additions are welcome. THE MAIN BUILDING Renowned artist David Ireland transformed the rooms and halls in this 1907 military-barracks building, where the wedding ceremony was held. Twenty four young artists volunteered for a year on an artistic journey that in many ways was more like an archaeological dig than an art project. Ireland conceives of his work as exploration rather than imposition. Things that have acquired an identity of their own over time -- broken chairs, brooms worn by use, stained walls -- intrigue him, and this sense of history informs his work. David Ireland and his crew sandblasted the layers of paint off the stamped-tin ceilings and pillars, and using sandpaper, solvents and even dental tools, picked the paint off the beautiful stairwell, railings and banisters. In the East Wing (the ceremony site), they stripped the walls down to the original plaster and the baseboards to their fine wood. These rooms are not only beautiful works of art, but important gathering places. Their functional duality -- aesthetic and practical -- reflects the Headland's mission and the kind of art it exists to support. Simply put, public and site art seek to take art out of its frame and put it back into the real world. Public art responds to its audience, as site art responds to its location. David Ireland's rooms serve both goals, situated at the heart of a thriving art center, sharing its artistic treasures with the public.
