Pretty excited when I first heard this spot finally opened. To get this similar style pizza, I had to rely on two other spots, with one being in DC and very famous. Anyway, we had a larger party and stopped through here for an early dinner Saturday evening. We gave the restaurant a call prior to, seeing if they can accommodate us and upon arriving, we sat down in about five minutes.
We started off with the oven baked wings, piled with sweet onions, all sitting on apparently pizza dough. The wings were kind of dry and didn't have anything special. They were seasoned with some rosemary and a touch of thyme and baked. We also ordered a basket of fries, nothing special here either, along with a greek salad. Lastly, we also got a basket of onion rings, which were the thin sliced kind and it did come with a delicious dipping sauce. The sauce reminded me on the famous blooming onion. Now for the pizza. We got three larger 16" pies. One being their Raging Fire (I think), which had their spicy marinara sauce, topped with banana peppers and italtian sausage. Of the three, this was my favorite because I just simply like spicy foods, but it didn't tell me to come back the next day to get it again. The second one was their sweet and spicy sauce. The server warned me that the sauce was a tad sweet and indeed it was. Wasn't what I had expected and I didn't really like it too much. We had it with pepperoni (which I recommend because the salt and sweet balance out pretty good), some green peppers and mushrooms. Finally our last pie was the classic sauce, topped with mushrooms and sausage, which again, was ordinary.
The pizza did not have enough mozzarella on any of the pies. I don't know if that's the way they do their pizza, which I am fine with, but I wish it had a little more cheese on them. The crust was done well though I must say. A nice brick-oven, thin touch to them. Oh, one of our companions got the beef brisket sandwich, which was only decent to me. I enjoyed the horseradish a little more than the brisket and bread actually.
Onto the service. The service was good in the beginning, but it kind of went downhill from there. Our server was attentive and came back with the items we requested. However, as the dinner went on, they wanted to get us out of the restaurant to turn our table. I'm talking, the other food runners and servers would come by, offer us boxes, wanted to pack up our pizza, but we weren't even done yet! The manager/supervisor kept an eye on our table on when we would be done. I know this because I was watching them from the host stand. They came around later to clear our cups and eventually took our pie sheets away so they can reuse them (which is fine, understandable). I mean I understand there's another party waiting, but come on now. Offering us boxes, wanted to clean-up our table, and watching us like an eagle? No offense to the server, they treated us well.
Overall, just decent food and worth trying if you're in the area. It's tucked away in the Kentlands neighborhood, which to me is a great location. I'd probably take the hike downtown or even Bethesda to get this style pizza though. To me, it's worth the extra drive. Lastly, I wish the management wasn't so pushy, this was a big drawback to me. We had some kids with us and their menu did not list any items for them. The server knew them off hand, so that was fine. Oh! and a drink list? Maybe because we didn't ask (or they didn't have one). I understand the restaurant is a about week-ish old. Barely a 3-star in my books for food and the management (not our server) gets 2-stars. Would I come back? I'm not even sure right now. read more
