I love how Griffith Park is a natural oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. There are so many trails within the park that it becomes a choose your own adventure on how easy or difficult you want to make the journey. I came this time with a friend, and we decided to walk off some calories after noshing at a local delicatessen. We parked in a small lot at the end of a cul de sac that doubled as the Brush Canyon Trailhead. It was along the southern end of Griffith Park which was a shorter but steeper distance to the sign at Mt. Lee Summit. The initial mile was an ascent that took us to the junction with Mulholland Trail. From there, it was a series of fairly flat switchbacks that provided a nice overlook of the mansions below. The path was wide enough to allow lots of foot and horse traffic. A drawback was the landmines (i.e. dung) you had to dodge from the horses. When we reached Mt. Lee Drive, it was a junction in which you could continue around the bend towards Tyrolian Tank. That was a plateau which we visited on our way back with a beautiful view of the sign as a backdrop. Our decision was to continue another mile up a service drive that would lead us to the back of the sign. I think many people underestimate the additional winding slopes before reaching the endpoint. There must have been an increase of 500 feet in elevation during this final climb. The peak provided a nice view of Lake Hollywood in the distance to the south and the smoggy blanket that hovered over the valley to the north. The back of the sign was rather boring as you could see the scaffolding that held up the letters. We took a break and then descended to Tyrolian Tank for more photos. By the time we arrived back at the parking lot, it was a three-hour round trip that covered over seven miles. The weather could not have been better as there were few clouds, and the temperature was in the low 70s.

The one in Griffith Park is huge and well maintained, with several play structures built for children of all ages and abilities. I went for a playdate the day before Christmas Eve, and was pleased to find easy lot parking on a Monday morning during winter break. My four-year-old had a blast with his little friend, running around and jumping into sand. They also rode their bikes around the surrounding bike path, and found their way to a cool slope near the merry-go-round that was perfect for burning kid energy. My two-year-old had a great time, too, and all three kids enjoyed going on the zip lines (this was not my favorite activity, as it involved lots of adult attention). There was a fruit cart on site for some healthy snacking, and plenty of places to sit. We stayed for a good two hours, only leaving because we had to eat. It was a pretty idyllic L.A. morning, and I look forward to taking my kids again.

There's lot's of different places for the children to play on this playground. I highly recommend parents to take their children here to play. I really don't want to be Negative Nancy. I'm still angry about sidewalks being uneven and not properly paved. The sidewalks are not thoroughly paved. You would think with all the tax dollars the city collects they could afford to properly pave the sidewalks. My wife was holding our son and she tripped and fell on the sidewalk as it was very uneven. She hit her face and chipped her tooth. Luckily, she protected our son and he was lucky not to hit his head. It really ruined our trip to the park as our son was crying hysterically. Cons: Not easy to find parking. Uneven sidewalks. Dangerous! Be careful! I get it everyone wants to make a living and support their family. I can appreciate that fact, but must people sell toys right next to the playground. Ai yo!!!! Our son is a bit spoiled. That's our fault! We need to work on that. Every time, we go to the grocery store or target he wants buy something. When we go to the park, we just want our son to play without being distracted by toys for sale. I'm sure we aren't the only ones annoyed by this. Shane's Inspiration and Griffith Park, get it together!

I wanted something that have an uphill, but she didn't feel like. The park is small, has tennis/pickle ball courts, a playground with soft matting, picnic tables, and benches throughout the park for resting. I liked the outdoor exercise equipment; I tried most of them and what an exercise I got. If I live nearby, I will come here every day instead of paying for a gym membership. Public facility on site, clean, fully stocked, and bright - unlike many park restrooms that are dark and smelly. Parking is easy, with spots both on the street and inside the park.

I'm not usually a fan of change, but they redesigned it with such thoughtfulness and heart that I can't even protest. Just to name a few of the updates, it now has eight tennis courts, outdoor exercise equipment, four pickleball courts, a basketball court, a soccer field, a splash pad, and winding walking paths. For a snack shop at a park, the selection was pretty impressive and unexpectedly high quality. Instead of the usual generic freezer-bin options, they carried a surprisingly curated variety of international ice creams and treats that actually felt thoughtfully chosen. The freezer selection alone looked like a tiny specialty market hidden inside a recreation center. The entire setup also matched the atmosphere of the park itself: clean, sunny, well-maintained, and quietly elevated in that very Southern California way where even the snack shop somehow has aesthetic range.
