Very late. Curbside assistant was very kind, but she couldn't reach the driver either.

I never got the hatred towards the Newark Airport AirTrain that connects the Northeast Corridor NJ…read moreTransit train line to the airport. I've always found the service smooth and convenient allowing me to spare my car the potential barbarism of long-term parking and the equally egregious cost. You get off NJ Transit, hop on and within minutes you're at any terminal at EWR. Are there occasional glitches and disruptions? Sure. However, driving the Turnpike from Central Jersey can be a delay-ridden white knuckle ride... to say nothing of the larcenous tolls. At the moment New Jersey is replacing the AirTran with an entirely new line to the tune of multiple billions. I can't wait for the outcry after the first delay. Nine figure solutions are not guarantees of anything in The Garden State. Five stars for pretending that they are.

Years ago, when my family and I first moved to New Jersey, my children were still little. Every…read moretrip to the airport began the same way--with a ride on the AirTrain from the parking garage. And somehow, I managed to convince all of them that there was a man sitting up front, driving the train. Whenever one of them began questioning my story, the recorded voice would come over the PA system. "Listen," I'd tell them. "The driver is talking." For a while, that was all the proof they needed. As they got older, of course, they became harder to fool. One day, when I could see the doubt written all over their faces, I pointed toward the front of the train. "If nobody is driving," I asked, "why does it have a windshield wiper?" My youngest daughter studied it for a moment and finally said, "That makes sense." I think that bought me another year. But childhood has a way of slipping away whether we're ready for it or not. Eventually, the AirTrain driver joined Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy among those wonderful things my children no longer believed in. The years passed. Yet whenever I return and ride that same AirTrain, something happens. The familiar recorded voice comes over the speakers: "Please remove all personal items before leaving the train." And for just a moment, I'm back there. My children are small again. Their hands are wrapped tightly around the railing, and they're watching the tracks with complete seriousness, worried that the mysterious man up front might somehow drive us right off them. I can almost hear their voices. Then another announcement comes over the speaker: "We are approaching the station." And just like that, I'm back in the present. I look at my watch and wonder if my daughter's flight is on time. It has been a full year since I've seen her. Only now, she isn't that little girl riding beside me anymore. She's arriving with a little girl of her own. As I wait for them and search the crowd for their faces, I find myself smiling. Maybe some things get to come around twice. And I wonder: Will my granddaughter believe me when I tell her there's a man sitting up front, driving the Newark AirTrain?

Who is the idiot that authorized the nj transit app update by making it a "trip planner" that…read morestarts at my house. NJ transit doesn't stop at my house.

Everything needs improvement! These trains are almost never on time. I mean their on time…read moreperformance is less than 1%. As passengers, we've refused to pay after the train that runs once an hour is cancelled and we have to wait for the next train which is usually late! Trains are run once an hour on lines with significant ridership and at stops with close proximity to NYC. The train will be delayed in transit by a guaranteed 7 minutes minimum. My "25 minute commute" into the city is rarely less than 40. If a train is late by more than 10 minutes, it's removed from the app and taken off the boards at stations with no explanation. At a busy station like New York Penn (NYP), that's a problem because now you have to listen for announcements and if you don't hear the announcement about the train, you miss it! Also, a train can be super late and if it remains in the app or pops back in by some miracle of God, the app says it's "on time". It's not on time. It's never on time. Diesel trains from the 1960s and 70s with wood paneling are still run by NJ TRANSIT. these trains don't have enough seating for rush hour but are consistently used. You can't board certain cars which at NYP is almost all of them which forces you to often walk nearly the entire length of the train just to find open doors through which to board. This also means that you have to walk the length of the train to find an available seat on the often underequipped trains. There's no signage at NYP showing which direction the train is leaving out of or even 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue like LIRR HAS, which means you have a 50/50 shot of sitting in the right place for your stop. Hazardous stations with crumbling stairs and no escalators are normal for NJ Transit. How you have elevated trains with no escalator, no functioning elevator, AND crumbling stairs is something I will never understand. Also, the station rooms for passengers to stay warm/cool have been permanently closed at some stops with elevated platforms. During FIFA match days, you can't get around Secaucus via public transport AT ALL because all the buses are routed to FIFA stadium. and the only trains that stop at Secaucus are for people going to the match (there's a separate line and boarding procedure for these trains that only run from NYP so you can't just get on it). So if you work there, good luck. During the most recent heat wave and following thunderstorms, my line lost service for 4+ days. And when it resumed, it was still running with "modified service" which translates to a train every 1-1.5 hours during rush hour. The app is trash. Can't even activate an adult and child ticket at the same time anymore. And the app suggests you buy tickets you seldom buy but the ones you buy most frequently are not in the suggested ticket section. Why?! It also requires you to run location services to function and runs location services as long as you have an activated ticket, which drains the phone battery. The buses have this ticket system that is zone based but you have to buy the ticket for the correct route and number of zones, which you have to figure out SEPARATELY because the app is trash. Ticket takers can be cool but there is definitely a percentage that walk through like prison guards announcing "tickets out". But given that it's NJ Transit, the trains feel like prison so they're just a reflection of the environment. Did I mention that the trains are rarely ever on time? I would give NJ transit negative 3,562 stars if I could. Don't move somewhere that you rely on NJ Transit to get around. You won't get there fast, if at all.

I took the NJT out of Linden to NYC a few times during my visit. For the out of towners like myself…read morewho aren't familiar with the NJT, you can get to NY Penn from Linden. It's a small station not too far from Newark. They have a few small parking lots around the station. There's a lot of construction nearby which has apparently reduced the number of available spaces. The daily fee to park is $6. Be sure to read the signs as some of the spots are reserved for permit parking. They have machines where you can pay to park by space number, however my uncle paid and still got a ticket. You can purchase train tickets at the ticketing machines near the platform. They do not have any ticket agents available. A roundtrip ticket to/from NY Penn was about $20. The price of course varies depending on your destination. It was about $10 to go round trip to Newark Penn. The station has bike racks and lockers. I don't recall seeing any elevators, however they do have ramps to get to the train platform if you aren't able to use the stairs.

Decent train stop, relative to overall NJ Transit quality (read: NJ Transit is awful). There are…read moretwo lines that run through here, so you can always expect something to show up (even if they do tend to cluster the arrivals around 5 before and 5 after any given hour). Anyway, my family lives relatively close by, so I come here to steal one of their cars to do things like move, do errands, escape New York, etc etc. Heated room if it's cold, ugly aesthetics, and ever climbing ticket prices; but hey it's NJT what do you expect*. --------- *Hopefully not modernism, efficiency, or affordability, because if you are you'll be sorely disappointed.
