I'm enjoying my personal training sessions very much. They're not always easy, but that's the…read morepoint. Douglas, my trainer, is pushing me the right amount to make a difference and I always leave feeling good about the work I've done and his partnership in my progress. Also it's just a great gym. It's a great place to focus on the workout but you always run into cheerful people that work there.

I want to share my disappointing experience with Randy, the owner of Metro Fitness. I moved In July…read moreand was committed to investing in my health before starting a really stressful job. In July, I purchased a $700 pass for 10 personal training sessions as part of a "summer special", with the promise that a master's-educated trainer would be available. Unfortunately, that trainer never started working at the gym, and I was not informed of this until late September--months after waiting and following up. Despite knowing my schedule, Randy repeatedly suggested trainers who were already fully booked. He then set me up with an unqualified intern who worked at the front desk. When I expressed my concerns, he acknowledged that this wasn't acceptable and offered Pilates as an alternative. However, that turned out to be another false promise, as no sessions or teachers were actually available. After months of back and forth and empty promises, I requested a refund, as it was clear I was not receiving the services I had paid for. Randy initially agreed but then delayed the refund, citing financial excuses like needing to wait until after the "metro gala." By November, I still hadn't received my money, and he stopped responding to my calls and texts entirely. Now it is mid January. This has been a frustrating and disheartening experience, especially as someone in a low-paying position after completing graduate school. I share this in hopes of warning others about this gym and Randy's business practices. If anyone has advice on handling situations like this, I would greatly appreciate your guidance. As an aside, I had a bad experience with a trainer there who was really creepy and asked extremely personal questions. Most of the gym is dedicated to the personal training space. There are never wipes or cleaning supplies convenient or restocked to clean equipment after use.

Planet Fitness was founded in 1992, in Dover, New Hampshire, when Michael and Marc Grondahl…read moreacquired a financially struggling gym and dramatically reduced prices to compete against better-known brands. Their low-cost business model focused on the needs of occasional or first-time health club members, rather than more experienced members. In 1993, the Grondahl brothers hired Chris Rondeau, Planet Fitness' current CEO, to work the front desk. Rondeau and the Grondahls recognized that there was a greater opportunity to serve a much larger segment of the population if they changed the gym environment, both in attitude and format, by creating a non-intimidating, low-cost model. Planet Fitness then became known as the "Judgement Free Zone," aimed more at the average user than the bodybuilder type of fitness enthusiast. As a fat guy, Planet Fitness is the kind of gym I want to go to. It's cheap, stocked full of plenty of equipment, and while their "Judgement Free Zone" gimmick can be a little hokey, they do tend to be patronized by people of average fitness levels just looking to get a quick work out in, as opposed to extremely serious fitness fanatics who spend hours a day at the gym. Anyone feeling self-conscious will feel welcome at their gyms, as it has always seemed to me that patrons aren't very interested in who else is at the gym or their fitness levels. The club's two membership levels are $10 and $21.99 per month: the $10 per month level includes access to cardio and strength equipment, unlimited group fitness instruction and pizza and bagels once a month; the $21.99 per month ("Black Card") level allows members to bring one guest per day at no charge, access to all Planet Fitness locations, and access to extra amenities, such as tanning booths and massage chairs. This location is one of the larger ones in the area, and thus, has a higher quantity of equipment than some other locations. It unfortunately also has the highest quantity of out of service and most run down equipment of all the locations I've visited. This is the location I frequent most, and there's never been a time I've visited where there isn't out of service machines. I counted 6 out of service treadmills the last time I was here, along with the one I was using only half working, as the incline feature wasn't working. Buttons were even falling off the controls. The locker room and bathrooms are some of the worst of the locations I've been to as well. The locker room has several lockers missing doors, and the bathrooms are typically kinda gross. While it's one of the bigger locations in the city, it's also in a very central location, and tends to be busier and harder to find machines to use, especially with the amount that they usually have out of service. The pros to it though are that, seeing as it is in a very central location, it's very close to highways, and only right down the street from Erie Blvd, in case you're looking to squeeze in a work out while running errands. Beng one of the bigger ones, even though it tends to get busier than others, there's still plenty of room and it rarely feels camped. It definitely could use some improvements, but it's still decent enough to use.

This location is clean and spacious. It's PF... what else can ya really say haha. Def the best PF…read morein the downtown Syracuse area.

Seriously great gym. The staff here are incredible. Within a week of joining they welcomed me by my…read morefirst name every time I entered the gym. They are constantly cleaning every thing. Their locker room is cleaner than my kitchen. Which makes me question my own standard of cleanliness. But any way. I don't actually use the trainers since I am a hairy man beast already and don't need further training. Seriously though, I'm in there when the trainers are working with the customers. They are very understanding and knowledgeable and apply the perfect amount of pressure to help the clients reach their goals. A hard job! This is a small gym. However, they have every piece of equipment I could need. They get crowed briefly for the lunch crowd and downtown after work (5:00pm) crowd. Otherwise it is not busy at all and I've never had an issue getting the equipment I need. I like to drop heavy weights as often as possible and I like that the staff don't hound me for it. It's a side effect of lifting heavy things. Some times they drop and go boom. Sorry if the big noise bothers any one. You could always try lifting some thing "heavy" I hear it relieves stress.

The gym is very clean, staff is friendly, and the space isn't crowded so you have easy access to all the equipment. I came to the gym for a 3 day-free membership pass to see if it was a gym I was interested in. The day I came in, which was the day the gym called me to come in, happened to be their last day to sign up for a pass with their discount. You sign up online and have to wait for a phone call to get an appointment to come into the gym to get a tour and then the 3-day pass. I was asked about my fitness goals and why I had those goals. This location only has cycle classes (no other group classes). The gym is extremely clean and has everything you'd need. They have cross fit stuff and things like kettle bells, weighted balls, boxes to jump on, etc. Their other locations have more group fitness classes. I didn't like the setup of how it coincidentally was their last day to sign up for the membership deal on the day they set up the appointment with me and I didn't like how much pressure I felt to sign up that day. I said I wanted to try the group fitness classes before signing up (hence I wanted the 3 day pass). The person I met with replied with "sounds like you're already going to sign up based on what you're saying, so why not sign up right now?" I wanted to go to this location because it's closer for me but it didn't fit my needs because of their lack of group classes and their shorter weekend hours (Sunday it's open only until 1PM). Also, they don't have a private parking lot. You need to pay the meter for street parking if you're parking before 6PM. It's normally $99 for enrollment (for the "keep fit" membership) and then $19.99 a month for membership but you can get the membership for $19 instead of $99 if you sign up by today (7/31). The VIP membership is normally $299 for 12 months (must pay up front) but today it's $199. After that year, your membership auto-renews for $8.25/month. You don't get the 3-day pass easily. They automatically set you up with a check-in appointment at the end of the 3 days to see how you liked your 3-days. I've never seen a gym that had such a hands-on free day pass before (value of $60).
