A Simple GameStop Mistake Became a Four-Visit Customer Service Failure…read more I rarely leave reviews like this, but what should have been a simple merchandise correction at this GameStop became unnecessarily difficult, requiring four in-person return visits, multiple phone calls, and intervention from GameStop Customer Support. On September 10, I purchased two new PS5 games, including The Blood of Dawnwalker for $69.99. GameStop incorrectly fulfilled the purchase. Although I paid for a new copy, I received the Dawnwalker disc inside a GameStop case labeled PRE-OWNED -- Bluey: The Videogame -- $24.99, rather than the proper new retail case. I repeatedly explained that I had not switched, altered, or repackaged anything. This was exactly how GameStop provided the merchandise. I even suggested management review surveillance footage from the day of purchase to independently verify what happened. Mistakes happen. The mistake wasn't the real problem. How this store handled it became the problem. Sept. 17 -- First return: My original request was simply to exchange Dawnwalker for another game. I spoke with an associate whose name I recall as Omar or Amir, explained the situation, and showed him the merchandise. He photographed my receipt and indicated the matter would be investigated. I suggested reviewing the surveillance footage if necessary. I left expecting follow-up but received no resolution. Sept. 18 -- Second return: I returned after hearing nothing. The original associate who sold me the games remembered me and the transaction. She was extremely apologetic, understanding, courteous, and professional. Unfortunately, she had not been informed about my previous visit or request. She willingly took my information to provide to management, but I again left without a resolution. Later, Madison attempted to call me twice, but no substantive voicemail explaining the calls or providing a resolution was left. Sept. 19 -- Phone follow-up: I called the store and spoke with the original associate, who asked me to call again later when Madison was working. I did and spoke directly with Madison. By then, after the runaround, I simply wanted a refund for Dawnwalker. I found Madison's communication condescending, dismissive, and lacking empathy. The conversation focused on what she supposedly could not do rather than how the store could resolve its mistake. After that interaction, I no longer wanted to patronize this location and decided to return my entire September 10 purchase, including Halo Campaign Evolved, which remained new and unopened. Sept. 20 -- Fourth return: Before returning again, I contacted GameStop Customer Support. They documented the issue under a formal reference number and confirmed that I remained eligible for a refund because I had received pre-owned merchandise instead of the new merchandise purchased. When I returned, Madison initially told me again that she could not process the refund and that I would need to return the next day when the manager was present. Madison also attempted to characterize our previous conversation differently, stating that she had agreed with me and believed the matter should be escalated. That was inconsistent with my recollection and recording of the conversation, which I told her I had retained. I then informed Madison that Customer Support had confirmed my refund eligibility, provided me a reference number, and that I had retained the previous recording. Only after those facts were presented did the direction and tone of the interaction noticeably change. Madison then looked up my transaction, requested my ID and payment method, and processed the entire $141.97 refund herself--despite initially telling me during that same visit that she could not process it and that I needed to return when the manager was present. I cannot speak to why her position changed. I can only describe what happened. I appreciate finally receiving my refund, but correcting a straightforward fulfillment mistake should never have required four visits, repeated calls, photographs, documentation, recordings, a written complaint, and a Customer Support case. Use this experience as a learning opportunity. This location would benefit from additional training in incorrect merchandise fulfillment, refund/escalation procedures, employee authority, accountability, empathy, and professional customer communication. Communicating with customers in a dismissive and condescending tone is not going to move the conversation forward. If an associate doesn't know how to resolve a situation, there is nothing wrong with saying, "I'm sorry this happened. Let me find someone who can help." The original mistake isn't what caused me to lose confidence in this store. Mistakes happen. The repeated lack of ownership, inconsistent information, poor communication, and unnecessary resistance to correcting that mistake did.
