BEWARE of the all you can eat option! It's only all you can eat if you eat every morsel on your plate. We decided to try a new menu item, the sushi pizza, and did not like it so we didn't finish it. When we tried to order another round we were told no because we were "wasting food". Our waitress even took my plate to show the manager and see if she would grant me the right to order food that I might enjoy. I was denied. We promptly asked for the check and left. My 14 year old daughter was dying for sushi, so I used Yelp and found this place near our hotel. I wasn't too hopeful about sushi in Duluth. We've eaten sushi in many Minnesota venues. This place was definitely much better than most of them. The food was delicious and freshly made with fresh ingredients. The prices were great; cheap as our favorite hole-in-the-wall places in Minneapolis. This place is no hole-in-the-wall. It is tastefully decorated with traditional Japanese sushi bar decor. (dark, funky modern decor and Asian touches). We had a miso soup and seafood soup as starters. My seafood soup reminded me of my favorite authentic Vietnamese Pho in Minneapolis, but without the noodles. It was very good even without noodles. Our sushi/sashimi was very fresh and beautifully presented with a real, fresh orchid flower in the center. I recommend this place if you are craving sushi and happen to be in Downtown Duluth. I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews with this restaurant. We were thoroughly impressed with everything. Our server was incredibly kind and not overbearing at all. She was there when needed and gone when not. She refilled our drinks appropriately and only took our plates when we were finished. The atmosphere was incredibly beautiful. The lights are dim, the statues are gorgeous, and the bubble walls are mesmerizing. I can tell they really put a lot of thought into decorating. The food, from what I had, was very good. I had the spicy mango shrimp dish. It was beautifully served. I must applaud their presentation. The sauce was incredibly tasty and I was surprised that it had any heat to it. Most places in this area that promote "spicy" are usually deceitful. This was not spicy by any means but I did get a hint of heat which was a pleasant surprise. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and the rice was plentiful. My one concern was that my shrimp was greatly overcooked. It tasted nearly like leather. My friends both had the udon noodles and seemed very pleased. The sauce was plentiful and the portions were big. The presentation was, yet again, beautiful. The prices for lunch were very reasonable and surprised me! Most places I have been to in this area are very expensive. Their dinner menu, however, does appear to be on the pricier size. The next time my travels being me through this area I definitely see myself stopping back in Cloud 9. I've never understood the negative ratings here ..... we've been maybe 6-7 times and every single time it's super good. I live in the cities so I have had amazing sushi and while this isn't the best I've ever had it's also half the price and is still fresh and good. Sesame chicken lunch has soup and CA roll and dumplings and rice, vegetable and protein for like 12 bucks. The service is friendly and speedy and the prices are good. There is some possible organization and first impression things they may want to look at but, again, it's well worth the price and a visit there. Don't let the bad reviews chase you away - I live next door to this place and love it. The food tastes great and the portions are hefty. Their happy hour deal is solid, and they have decent taps (like Odell IPA) that are around $2.75. I can't find a better General Tso chicken in Duluth and also recommended the beef and fried noodles. My girlfriend loves the chicken hibachi lunch. It's chill and food comes out fast. I really dislike giving negative reviews because this is someone's business and livelihood, but I really can't recommend Cloud 9 at all. The first time I went I was impressed with the restaurant, it's very visually appealing inside, and the sushi wasn't bad. It also wasn't great by any stretch. And what's the point of just meh sushi? But not worth complaining too much about. I would've given them a 3/5 for that encounter. The second time I went I phoned in an order for medium spicy chicken pad Thai. She said "ok, 10 minutes, $16.54." wait what, $16.54 for chicken pad Thai? This better be incredible. And it wasn't. But there was absolutely nothing good about. It was the most bland, tasteless thing I've ever eaten in possibly my life. No spice. No flavor of any type. Barely any chicken. So it was both the most expensive and the worst pad Thai I've ever had. I wish I'd just gone through a drive-thru. A great little find by the canal park area. We got in late so it was pretty quiet. The wait staff was very attentive and got us situated with beverages and appetizers right away including the baby! Our meals were quickly on the table and were AMAZING! The General Tso's chicken was top notch and the lobster roll got rave reviews. I've ordered from Cloud 9 twice and both times I've left disappointed. The sushi is mediocre and when I ordered off the vegetarian menu there was crab in my roll. The online menu does not have a description of ingredients so I would have assumed ordering off the Vegetarian Rolls would give me a veggie roll. I also ordered veggies with tofu. The pieces of tofu was soggy and congealed together in a mushy bready goo. The 'veggies' were all onions and maybe one or two pieces of red pepper and zucchini. It really should have been labeled as tofu and onions. For what they charge I would expect higher of quality food, all I found was large portions of bland, soggy, mush. I ended up having to add in my own veggies and herbs to make it palatable. Next time I'm going to China Inn or Beijing for Chinese. As for sushi, just about every other Japanese restaurant in town in better than this place. Don't bother with this restaurant- there is way better sushi, Chinese, and Japanese food in town.
