After neatly pressing and dry cleaning over 25 professional work clothes, size 4P, from Ann Taylor, Gap, J.Crew, and Banana Republic, I was very disappointed when an employee handed me my basket with a "PASS" note on the entire load. She told me my clothes were "well loved" and "not in current demand". I take a lot of pride in my style and appreciate good quality clothing. Although several pieces may have been a little dated (we are talking mid 2000's, not 1980), in my opinion, some clothes never go out of style- such as black rain coats and suit blazers. I was very taken back and thought this store would be different than the other consignment shops in the area. In a way, I'm happy I was able to walk away with all my clothes, so that I can now donate them to less fortunate and more appreciative women. read more

I went for the first time to Clothes Mentor this week to sell some clothes that I couldn't sell on eBay. I knew going in from reading their website info and from the other reviews that I wasn't going to walk out of the store with a ton of cash for my items, but at least I could sell them and get something, and I was okay with that. I thought the process was easy and I browsed around while my clothes were being assessed. They have some really nice pieces and everything I saw was in great shape. I love the fact that they have all sizes (even plus and size 11 in shoes) and that the store looks clean. The problem for me, and the reason I didn't give it 4 or 5 stars was because I was a little put off by the staff working that afternoon. Perhaps it had just been a bad day for them, but as I walked in, a few customers were walking out and the two girls behind the counter immediately started talking about the customers who had just left. Same thing happened about 20 minutes later, a girl came in to sell her handbag, and while I admit she didn't get that there were two other people's clothes waiting to be bought ahead of her own bag, I found it distasteful that again, immediately after she left the store, the girls behind the counter started talking about her. The store isn't huge and it's a quiet atmosphere, so I got to hear all about the associates problems with their parents, boyfriends, and just day in general as I browsed. Overall, I know it's customer service and I know it's not an easy job, but if you can't even pretend to crack a smile at your customers and are okay with talking about them after they leave in front of other customers, well that really makes me double think the choice of doing continued business there. read more

Don't waste your time going there. They offer you 10 per cent or less of the original cost. They really want to take advantage. I will take my clothes and give them away at good will instead of being paid their abusively small fee. read more

When I found out about Clothes Mentor I could not wait to visit the store. I also had a lot of clothing in my opinion were pretty nice. I bagged my clothing and drove to Chapel Hill in hopes of getting some extra spending money. When I arrived the associate behind the counter told me there were ten others waiting to have their clothing appraised and it would take about five of six hours before they could get to my clothes. I had no problem with that at all. The store called me around five o'clock that afternoon and told me to come by to discuss their decision. I knew I was not going to get what I really wanted but I thought I would have gotten something. Instead, I was given my clothing back with a "Pass" note. The gentleman that waited on me was very nice and appreciated me bringing my clothing in. His explanation was either my clothes were too small or too big. I was really baffled with that statement. Their website states they accept sizes 0-26. I am a size 6 or 8. Go figure! I could not understand their reasoning. In my opinion my clothing looked as nice if not better than some of theirs.. As I mentioned before, the gentleman was very nice and he even offered to help me carry my bags to my car. Maybe it's a good thing. I have learned my lesson and I will think twice before visiting this store again. Therefore, I will take my clothing to a place that will be much more appreciative and will benefit someone in need. read more

Do not bother to sell clothes here. It is a total and complete waste of time. What will happen is you are going to spend WAY too much energy cleaning, sorting, folding clothes and hauling them in. THEN you will wait. After that, they will NOT pay you 1/3 of 1/3--not by a long shot. Moreover, they are going to buy about 1/20 of what you bring in. Total waste of time! Just take your stuff to PTA and let less fortunate people benefit--because that is where 95% of your stuff is going to end up anyhow. Don't bother with Clothes Mentor. I never will again. I just went to Clothes Mentor today for the first time and absolutely loved it! The store is clean and easy to browse through. I found some cute dresses and tops for springtime, and most of them were high-end brands that would have been way more expensive in the store. I even sold a few things and got credit towards my purchase. I will definitely be returning! read more

I love this place! Chapel Hill really needed an upscale consignment store. All the clothes are really stylish and look as if they were never worn. I'm not joking! I looked at about 8-10 pairs of shoes and only two of the pairs had very, very light scuffing on the bottom. The prices are great. The store is very clean and organized. The staff was really helpful and polite. I will definitely be a regular! read more

I went here yesterday hoping to find summer tops. I was a bit surprised to see what they had in stock. Most of the items were not well-known brands that you'd see at a mall. I even saw a few Old Navy tops. (In my experience Old Navy's new clothes aren't great quality - why would I buy them used?) I might go back again, but it will be awhile to let the inventory turn over and see if they decide to start carrying better brands. read more

It pains me to have to give a one star review, saying as I love supporting small businesses and I love thrift shopping, but this place was really a disappointment. I am in a women's book club and a couple of my friends were raving about this place so I decided to give it a go. I went in with the intention of picking up a new dress for the holidays, and while I was impressed with their selection, the customer service absolutely SUCKED. I went in last night, excited to find a dress, and was greeted with the rudest, loudest group of women conversing behind the counter. I immediately asked where the dresses were -- as I was overwhelmed by the stores inventory -- but they didn't hear me, and when I asked again, one of them had the audacity to say "one sec." I couldn't believe it, but I was really wanting a dress so I ignored her comment and continued. I picked out three dresses and then headed over the accessories to find a nice pair of earring to match, and when I got over there the same girl came up to me and asked if I had pocketed a pair. I was shocked, embarrassed, and confused. I told her I hadn't and offered to show her inside of my pockets, purse, or anywhere else they may be. She responded with an abrupt "mhmm..." as if she was still concerned I had stolen a pair; she then followed up by asking if I could afford all three dresses, as they were designer, and told me that if I couldn't she would just prefer I leave. So that's what I did, and I will not be returning. Ladies, say FAR AWAY from this place, and go to Plato's or Goodwill (yes, it was that bad of an experience) instead. read more

I am a 31 year old first time mother to a 16 month old, I did not bounce back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I was in desperate need of good quality, stylish, age appropriate and season appropriate clothes that actually fit in a flattering way and do not cost an arm and a leg. I do not have a natural sense of fashion and I absolutely loathe shopping. So I set up an appointment with Tracy B. for their free 1 hour personal shopper service. I filled out the request form on their website in the morning and that same afternoon Tracy called to follow-up and set up my appointment. While on the phone she asked questions to better gauge my personality and my style (which I don't even know my "style"). The conversation was so smooth and engaging. She had me so excited about coming in just from her level of enjoyment and enthusiasm that she has for her job. On the day of my appointment, I showed up at the store and Tracy greeted me with the most confident, reassuring smile. She led me to a changing room filled with beautiful clothes. She taught me how to create multiple outfits from a few pieces. I tried on so many of the clothes she had already chosen for me (*bonus*I didn't even have to go through the racks!). Nearly everything I tried on fit my body type and represented my personality perfectly. The entire time I was with Tracy, she taught me how to be fashionable and comfortable at the same time. She taught me how to wear clothes to flatter my body and express my personality. She had me so at ease and for the first time I truly enjoyed shopping. I left the store with an entire fall/winter wardrobe for 1/4 of the retail cost (*bonus* a few pieces can transition into spring and summer) and a boost in my confidence. I suggest everyone to go see Tracy, especially if you are feeling blah in your current clothes. One of the great things about this store is that it's a resale store, so costs are markedly lower but the quality of the clothes is equivalent to the brand new versions. I know a few of the tops I purchased still had the original tags on them. Also when I am done with any of the pieces, I can sell them back to the store. read more
