Clothes Encounters Laundromat - Rutherford, NJ I walked into Clothes Encounters with two comforters and a lot of determination, but also a bit of confusion. With $10.25 in hand and two Tide Pods, I made a rookie mistake. I started the wrong machine, and of course, I didn't realize it until after the fact. But here's where this place really shines--Deb, the woman working the counter, came to my rescue. She noticed I was flustered, and without hesitation, she started the correct machine for me at no extra cost. Plus, she generously gave me some detergent since I lost my Tide Pod. Now that's customer service. The laundromat is clean, with plenty of machines to choose from. My comforters were washed and dried with no issues (after a little help), and I was back on track. Despite the hiccup, the experience was smooth, and I left with a fresh load and a smile. Final thoughts: Small mistake, huge save, and solid service. 5 stars, easily. If I could give NEGATIVE stars I would, my dryer died middle cycle and I drove over to this place thinking I could get in and out quickly. But when I walked in I was greeted with a lady telling me that last wash was at 5:30 and they are closing for the night. I told her all I needed was a dryer because mine just died and she repeated saying "we're closing". Per their door and google they were closing at 7pm and I walked in at 6:05pm. Drying a small load of clothes wouldn't take 55 minutes, yet she kept saying they were closing. SMH. I guess it is off to Sonic Suds where they are very nice to their customers. read more

At the outset, I should confess that I've never personally used a laundromat (to do laundry in, that is) in my life. Thankfully, I have a washer/dryer in my residence. My experiences with laundromats, such as they are, are limited to... (1) I was a kid, and we were staying at the Jersey shore on vacation. Of necessity (the place we were staying at didn't have a washer or dryer) my parents used a local laundromat, brought me along, and I remember being excruciatingly bored. Then again, I was bored by practically everything in those days-- school, church, sports, PAL, Boy Scouts, etc. etc. Pretty much everything except cartoons on TV. (2) I was in high school, and the "stoners" were taking me to smoke marijuana. I was a new kid in town, hadn't smoked before, but wasn't adverse to the notion of trying pot, if that's what it took to make friends in this strange, unsettling town. For some reason, we smoked in the bathroom of the local laundromat. Don't ask me why; I can't remember. The pot made me tired, not high. I went to English class, and nodded off. The teacher did nothing (better the kid is asleep than awake and making trouble, was probably her thinking), and, of course, I learned nothing. And never got high again. In a laundromat, that is... (3) A friend recently had to use a laundromat in High Bridge, NJ. To me, it seemed dirty, barren, depressing. The machines were skeevy with caked filth. There wasn't a magazine in sight, and the tiny bathroom was out of order. I think I would have rather washed my clothes in the nearby brook, using stones and whatever else the Pioneers used to get their clothes clean, way back when. (4) I now, every few weeks, make trips to Clothes Encounters to help my birth mother with her laundry. My birth mother is over 70, has health issues, and lives in a 3rd floor apartment nearby. She has no washer or dryer, and I bring her over here every few weeks to do her laundry (I live approximately an hour away; otherwise, she could use mine). My function in this particular endeavor is to carry the bags of dirty laundry down the 3 flights of stairs, into the car, into the laundromat. Once the process is finished, I carry the clean laundry out of the laundromat, into the car, up the 3 flights of stairs. While she does the laundry, I sit and read. As I've said, my experience with laundromats is limited, but I like this one. Everything in the place, from the machines to the dryers to the chairs in the waiting area, seems clean. The machines look relatively new, up-to-date, non-skeevy. My birth mother has never complained of any "smell" associated with them (I've seen that complaint in reviews of other, lesser laundromats), or any lack of efficiency from the machines in the process of cleaning, or drying, clothes. The people working here are friendly, hard-working, and helpful. If I grow bored (bored kid "matures" into bored adult, I guess) with my book, there are lots of "celebrity" magazines available, filled with stories and photos of beautiful, rich people I've never heard of. It's ok. They do provide a diversion while the clothes get clean. I admit it-- there are times I'd rather look at pictures of Arianne Grande or Rihanna than read Nietzsche or Norman Mailer. Just so long as I don't have to listen to them. If there's a negative to this place, it's the parking outside. The laundromat is located in the tiny "Justin Center" mini-mall, which includes some kind of school, a realty company, a "sweet shop," and a 7-11 on the other side. Usually, parking isn't a problem, but I've been told that on Tuesdays, the school or the realty company (not sure which) holds some kind of class, and parking becomes nearly impossible. I found that out this past Tuesday. There were some spots by the 7-11, but I've been told that the people in 7-11 will tow you, with alacrity. Luckily, I was finally able to secure a "safe" spot, but it does loom as a potential problem if you're coming here in your car to do laundry. Particularly on Tuesdays. If you get hungry or thirsty while you're waiting for your clothes, the "sweet shop" next door is a nice, nostalgic throwback to the luncheonettes of my long-ago youth. I usually stop in for a soda and some candy (and avoid the 7-11, where they're so eager to tow my car, or any car). My genetic uncle worked in the sweet shop as a teenager, and he's past 70 years of age now, so it gives an indication of how old this place is. So if you have to do laundry, and you're not fortunate enough to have a washer/dryer in your residence, this is not a bad place to do it in. Just watch where you park. read more

Before I begin my review, I would like to address the nitwits who gave this small and efficient local business less than five stars. So here it is: shut up. In 2015 I was involved in a car accident, and I broke my hip bone and femur (which now when I look back on it is pretty humerus). Anyhoo... I could barely move, and my partner was overwhelmed with not only maintaining a home for two people but keeping up with my obsessive-compulsive requirement to keep all clothes clean (I identify with the bathroom scene in 'Mommie Dearest'). We've had our underpants and hoopskirts picked up weekly - like clockwork - for five years. Each time the laundry comes back, it's like we ordered a brand new wardrobe. And our load is not light. We are a couple who change sheets weekly and like to change undershirts when a commercial comes on. Clothes Encounters keeps up with our habits, and I'm happy to say that I'm a happy and impressed customer. Viva la Clothes Encounters! read more

Moved to the area and needed help with a mountain of laundry. Contacted Clothes Encounter and they readily agreed to pick up the laundry next day. They said it could take up to a week since there was so much. Imagine my surprise when all my clothes came back next day clean and folded! Very impressed! read more

This store fits my lifestyle perfectly. I am a super busy woman and travel a lot with work. this causes me to not be able to handle my personal affairs very well. Clothes Encounters reached out to me a couple of years on Yelp. they told me about their service of pickup/drop-off wash and fold laundry service. I quickly integrated this service into my life and have never been happier. My laundry comes back fresh smelling and perfectly folded. Some of my items even return on hangers. I would never expect that so I appreciate the quality of service this laundromat offers. Debbie is the amazing lady that I contact when I need laundry service. She is always prompt and smiling. I can honestly say that in two years of using this service I am always happy with the results. At last I guess I have to mention that their prices are very fair and competitive. I have never gawked at a bill. I give this service my highest of recommendations. I also thank all the staff for making my life just a little bit more bearable. read more

This is a great little local spot for laundry. The only drawback I feel is the total size of the place. If it's busy, some of the larger washers are hard to come by. There's not a whole lot of seating area (maybe 7 or 8 seats close together in the front corner of the place), or folding space (4 stands total). Even given the small size, we've still rarely run into issues in which we were waiting long for a machine we needed. The staff here is incredibly helpful and friendly. It really has a neighborhood feel, where they try and remember everyone by name. They have a drop-off service, and do dry cleaning too. We have not utilized these services, only brought and done our own laundry. The bathroom is very clean, as is the full facility. They have small sizes of detergent and dryer sheets in case you forget or run out. They keep a variety of magazines for customers to read. There is also a convenience store AND 7-11 in the same strip mall where Clothes Encounters is located - very nice for a coffee or snack while waiting for your laundry. Funny anecdote - once upon a time I forgot a load of jeans in the dryer. Not only did they hold onto my laundry, but when I went to pick it up, they had folded it neatly for me. read more

I was in a pinch yesterday and the owner, Joanne, accommodated me even though I was late calling in for laundry pick-up. She politely explained to me that it's best if I book in advance, but still took the time to PERSONALLY come and pick up my laundry. I could have cried. It was just so sweet to feel completely taken care of by a local small business. I picked up my laundry later that day and everything was perfect. They have just gained a new loyal customer :) read more

The attendant on duty (debbie) seems unbalanced at best, hard to get change from her, she shrieks at you to get anything less than $10 from the machine, when she does turn the machine on. Weird place. read more

This review is for dry cleaning. I dropped off a gown and the gown came back damaged. There was discoloration on it as well as small holes that appeared on the fabric from what looks like a poor job steaming the dress. When I called the next day after picking it up to let them know it was damaged, they didn't care and told me I have to deal with Union Dry Cleaners directly. Horrible customer service and complete lack of sympathy. They also then told me next time I bring in the gown they are going to charge more for it. Why would I bring it in again? Your services allowed it to get damaged! read more

Clean laundromat with an attendant on site. Price is on par with other spots. It's a bit of a hidden gem, and therefore isn't always packed at once which is great. My only thing is I wish they went to a card system for payment, making change for quarters is a bit outdated. read more

I had come to this place at least in four different occasions and the girl that is there on Saturday's morning is a sweetheart as well as this older blonde lady that may be the owner (not sure) but this other one who has short hair and tattoos, is straight up rude! Maybe a class on customer service should do good on her. As I waited patiently by the counter for her to give me change, while she was cleaning up the machines, (which I had no problem with it) she decided to hollow at me, "if you don't want to wait, there's a machine for change"?!?!? Just like that, not one word more or less. Obviously, I wanted to wait, since I didn't want to get $20 dollars worth of coins scattered in my purse but since I could tell in her tone the nastiness and unprofessionalism, I just opted to do just that and give my honest review of this place. There was another incident with this same individual the previous time I've come where I graciously said "have a good day" before leaving the premises and she didn't even reply, I thought to my self at the time, maybe she didn't hear me since I was close to the door and she was all the way behind the counter. I've worked in customer service for over 20 years and know the ropes of it very well, and I know how quickly one can lose business by employing the wrong people. I may not have been a regular since I moved recently to the area but have family and friends that have lived in the area for over 25 years. With that being said, I will not be returning and I will be sure to pass the word around. read more

I will never ask anybody for a favor again because of the way the woman Debbie treated me here. I am handicapped because of a bone on bone hip and I asked for a little favors from her drivers and I got a mouse when they came 2 hours early and I had to give up a doctors appointment. She's saying I'm doing nasty things to her driver's I never said a nasty word anybody. I asked him to help me with a couple of things that they didn't want to do it they could have said no. When I call to complain that they were two hours late she told me it's because nobody wants to come to my apartment anymore cuz I make them to other work whatever happened to the word no. I was willing to pay extra for somebody to help me out with a couple of chores if they had time while they were here. I asked one lady to get one thing I left on the couch for the laundry because I couldn't get back there with my Walker. I can't imagine a place that was more rude than I've ever heard of my life. read more
