Over last fall I started to get estimates for a Re-model of my master closet. The first one was from a gal that lived in Nevada City that I found on Instagram that I had to pay at $200 fee just for a consultation/ estimate. I asked her if she might think of doing just the half of the closet that was ugly and cheap. A builder friend of mine told me it's one of those " closet kits" that you buy from those home improvement stores. It was just hideous and stuck out like 12" to far into the closet itself, you will see in the photos below. Anyhow the first girl's estimate was 12 grand. I had sticker shock! We have so many projects around this house because it's 30+ years old. I definitely like the fact that our house has the charm that these new housing tracts just don't have. We have a ton of mature trees and a big property. I just didn't feel like spending that much on the closet... The second estimate was from the other big name closet place in Reno. He was very nice but he wouldn't even consider doing a partial and shut me down straight away. One side of the closet is double hanging only with a large shelf at the top so you really don't see much of the wood to be fair. Frankly I was a bit put-off at his indignity as me even asking for two estimates. His estimate came in around 10 grand. Um No! My neighbor was over for a dinner party and had mentioned that she had a good friend that does this. I called Jean Anne and made a appointment for her to come over and give me a third estimate. She was a living doll and accepted the idea of just doing the right hand side only. We went into her shop and looked at different woods, hampers, hardware, etc. we decided to go with the least expensive white finish ( glorified particle board) . We decided on getting a pretty panels for the front of the drawer area since there will only be 8 drawers it was well worth the extra amount. The hamper feature was $300 and very small so we passed on that since we already have hampers we like. The estimate was 4 grand! Now we are talking! Today was the long awaited day. It took extra time since the drawer fronts had to be custom made. Sergio and Jose showed up 15 minutes early so that was a good sign. Then the trouble started... Sergio ripped out 2 sections that were supposed to stay...One of the shelves were for my beloved shoe section that I keep all my pricey ones in their boxes and the other is where I keep all my Juicy tracksuits and my American Giant cold weather matching sets. BTW: American Giant is the Best for cold weather, I literally have not found any other clothing that is as warm for those super cold days. Then they realized that they were missing two panel fronts for the top two drawers :( The next appointment is on 7/7 to finish so I now have to live with that cyclone of a mess for 3 more weeks... Also the 7th is our wedding anniversary and our big 4th party we have every year. Now I have to live with the mess for much longer but these things do happen. My biggest fault is I can be too nice! Truly! I was very nice to this Jean Anne. So much when we realized "her best guy" Sergio made the mistake she said something like; "Oh we will fix it at cost"... Ummmm whose mistake was this?? Mine? Sergio (the best guy)? She should have been over here in the a.m. to go over it with him. It wasn't my job to make sure he had the details right! This was a very stressful situation overall. And as the saying goes; "you get what you pay for" In the end we are very happy with how the closet looks. It was a great idea to put the attractive closet fronts on the drawers it looks so much nicer! read more

I rarely write a bad review. This will probably be the worst review I've ever done or ever will do. I ordered a custom garage cabinet for my 2 ft by 3 ft slabs of glass. (Click on the photo to see the end project.) I was very specific about what measurements I needed. The person who I worked with, who "designed" my cabinet, was Amanda Flores. Her work was beyond incompetent; it was disastrous. While I blame her for her work, I think the bigger fault is of the company, Closets By Design. Amanda was trying to do her best; she obviously wasn't trained to do the job. The process of getting the cabinet made began with Amanda coming to my home to measure the space. We discussed the proximity of the metal shelves that were to be above the cabinet. We also discussed the wooden rack and it's removal. About 10 days after this, I came to the cabinet shop to see what she designed. It did not reflect what we agreed on. The interior of the cabinet needed to be tall enough to comfortably accommodate the glass. She made the area too small for the glass to fit. She said that she made this change because the cabinet would have legs and we hadn't figured that in. Also that the metal shelves limited how tall the cabinet could be. We dealt with this change by reducing the size of the shelf above the main area. Because I accepted what Amanda told me, my cabinet is much shorter than I'd wanted. After our meeting at the shop, I realized that I should check the depth of the cabinet she designed. This required a call to the company because the interior measurements were not included in the diagrams Amanda sent me. (Amanda told me that they couldn't be indicated because the diagrams were two dimensional and putting in the interior measurements would involve three dimensions. Huh!!! No one educated her how to include interior measurements in a project!!!! ) In any case, the depth needed to be 28" to accommodate the glass. Amanda designed a cabinet with insufficient depth. I was clear about the purpose of this cabinet, to store slabs of glass I use for glass projects, yet Amanda and the company never grasped this. They installed an adjustable shelf; I asked for a fixed one. And they installed at the top of the main area the type of rod one uses for hanging clothing. Thankfully it's removable. The end of this saga ends with an expense created by the men who installed the cabinet. One of them bumped into a sensor bracket that controls the garage door opener. It cost $128 to have the garage door company to come out to fix it. read more

The design uses all available space to create an esthetically pleasing and functional pair of closets in the Primary bedroom. I paid them in full $12k before they arrived to install 5 garage cabinets and they continue to make excuses as to how they are too busy to finish the installation after multiple emails and calls asking them to finish. Inwasn't aware their designer was unable to make simple measurements that was partially responsible for their excuses as to why they won't finish the installation. There are lots of garage cabinet companies in the Reno area so Avoid Avoid Avoid!!! read more

UPDATE: I did hear from Alex, the installation manager, within days of my post. He came out to look at the pantry and agreed it was not up to his standards. We had a good conversation and he came back personally within a few weeks to repair all the damaged pieces and work. Much happier now! Very happy with quality and service from start to finish. I received an appointment right away and actually spoke with the office staff rather than a call center! After the measurements were taken I scheduled another time to go to the showroom and choose the color and look at the quality of their product. Very impressed. They actually build the units in house with the exception of the door fronts, I believe. A date to install was set for 5 weeks out and installation went very smoothly. Truly a wonderful experience and I thank closets by design for their friendly staff and great workmanship. Their price was also very reasonable! read more

Great company. The gentleman who comes out to measure, the people in the showroom and the installers were all super nice and professional. Only knocked a star off for price. They claim to give you this tremendous deal with "40% + 15%" off, but thats all just marketing as they were actually about 15% more expensive than California Closets for the same closets, which surprised me because I contacted this place after everyone told me CC was extremely overpriced. Problem was, I liked this place's overall design better, so i went with them, but it was at the absolute top end of my budget. I also appreciated how they build everything at their local shop, as opposed to CC ordering everything to come in from out-of-state, which is why i still went with them despite the cost. But even $100 more and i would have just said forget it. Overall, very satisfied. read more

Designer messed up on of four closets/garage spaces. They offered $200 credit. Basically, I ordered full size doors and ended up with the upper portion opened because the full size door didn't have enough clearance to open. They ran my credit card I used for a deposit on the first of the month when I had until the 5th to make a payment. Causing double payment. I went on record that they were not authorized to charge my credit card. Then they did it again! Causing another double payment. It took 6 months to get this job done including the damage repair to the base boards. Keep in mind when ordering closets that the existing tear out of old closets shelves will be exposed, you must have touch up paint, but wall texture will be exposed and not look great until you cover it up with hanging clothes. I never received a call from the owner or manager regarding delays, screw ups, and unauthorized use of my credit card. Thank goodness for the front desk person Gerry. read more

We contacted Closets by Design/WE Kitchens in early 2021 to design closet systems for our walk in pantry and our walk in master closet. We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, but Josie was able to make suggestions that made sense. I had priced out closet systems with 4-5 different companies (including a few DIY closet systems) and have to say that Closets by Design had very fair pricing and they were super responsive. Once we paid our deposit, we scheduled our tentative install date as we were installing on a new construction home after close of escrow- well those goal posts kept getting moved, but Josie was wonderful with getting us new install dates without having to wait weeks after closing. As it turned out, we closed January 31st and our closet systems were installed Feb 3rd and 4th and we could not be happier with the experience. The installers were very friendly, professional and kept everything very clean. We realized after everything was done that some of our shelves were too wide apart for shoes, so I contacted Josie about getting some additional shelves, no problem. And when they were ready, she offered to bring them to our home. Superb Service and I would highly recommend this company and have told several of my neighbors about our experience. We filled out a request online for an appt. They ask for a first and second choice for dates and times. We received no response so just let it go. Today someone came to our door for the appt! I got dressed and opened the garage door and told the young woman that I never heard from them and was surprised to see her. She said that they called and emailed me (but I already had checked and there was no email or call.) She said that I was being rude and started walking to her car. I asked her that now she's not even going to continue with the "appt"? Again, she said that I was rude. That was the strangest weirdest sales call I've ever experienced. She looked at her watch a couple times so maybe she had other plans or appts. I would not give them a second chance. We called another company and told them what happened. They scheduled us for an appt for tomorrow. Why would someone make something so difficult when it should be so easy? read more

If you want to spend $10,500 on plywood and veneer, this is the place for you. One master bedroom closet that is a walk-thru, one cabinet in a hall bath and a small kitchen pantry shelving system totaled that $10,500. This was after the (insert eye roll) gracious 40% off. You'd be better off buying cabinets and shelves from IKEA and paying a handy man. That would save you like $7,500 on the discounted price. Let's not forget Ronald Wilhite, the owner, who's attitude is "just deal with it," when we specifically asked numerous times if the cabinets we were getting were real wood. According to Ronald, and you'll love this, real wood is inferior to plywood and veneer. This guy, and his businesses (they also own WE Kitchens) are a joke. We have filed a complaint with the BBB and have provided the volumes of email communications between my wife and the designer. I could literally write for days about this horrible business. We met with Scott on July 1, 2020. He was professional, knowledgeable and designed a perfect closet for our master. The install team came on time, about 8 weeks later, performed quickly and corrected any items that we didn't love. They cleaned up after themselves, were respectful of our home and time. Brice was our installer and needs to be recognized for his hard work, patience and quality work. I will highly recommend Closets by Design to all my friends and family. They are also We Kitchens and while we'll have them do our kitchen late/mid year once our travels are done, they DID do our bathroom full wall cabinet recently. I do have to say, their built in office units do hold up pretty well (hence the two stars vs one).....but their installers may be a bit rushed and not dot their i's and cross their t's - per say.... We recently bought a home that they installed a unit in several years ago. It wasn't a bad unit, just not for us. So, my husband and I made a decision to carefully remove the unit from the wall. Well, upon removal, we immediately noted that the screws they used were pretty long. About two days after removal of the unit, I noticed the paint was peeling around the hole and the drywall was really soft and wet. My husband and I immediately investigated by cutting the drywall around the screw hole. We noted that the installers screwed in a large screw through the drain pipe. It's my understanding that large, heavy units should be anchored to studs....not to pipes...but, what do I know, I only work for a home builder?!?! read more

Love my closet!! Ive had it less than a year it was everything I needed for the space I had! Im moving (not selling my house just moving) and I want to take the set up to my new primary residence and see how it might fit and possibly build on but they told me I can't take it! We made an appointment to have our closets measured but they never showed up nor did they call to cancel. I know mistakes happen, but it is annoying when you arrange your day around said appointment. The designer called the next day and was surprised they didn't show. When the office called back to reschedule, there was no apology or reason. Kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Am I wrong to expect good customer service? Is it MY responsibility to call and see if the estimates is on time? (all rhetorical questions of course) 7 x's more people write reviews based on bad experiences rather than good. Here is what I just sent their on line form because there is no direct contact for email. I would like a manager or franchise owner to call me. I had an appointment for 4pm today Nov 1. No one showed up. No call. No nothing. So I called and I was transferred 3 times given I had called in on the brochure #. This is not how to run a business. If you are even 5 minutes late I would expect a call. You don't leave customers waiting with no explanation. It is just common courtesy. I rearranged my day to be at my house at 4pm, then I wait with no call from anyone. Finally at 4:30p I called...yes, the customer called to check on the person coming for an estimate... and was told "oh he is running late from his earlier appointment, he can be there in 15 minutes." (45 minutes late at minimum) I told them to cancel it, I have a life and plans this evening. I also have money I want to spend on closet organizers. BIG mistake. Heres the thing...people are willing to pay more for a product if they get good customer service. I am seriously disappointed and my beautiful closet and office will probably have to come from somewhere else. read more

We ordered 4 - 48x96 cabinets and were concerned how the install would go because there were obstructions on the wall, an outlet, conduit and pipes. Where do I begin...I started my journey with them June 2021. I had to wait till December to get my closet installed. I absolutely understand with labor, equipment, products etc. December comes around and they only have part of my order. Ok, fine, but it's the wrong cabinets for my closet, they forgot the glass, they didn't bring all the cabinet faces and the handles were not there. They installed about 80% of my closet and the installer never said anything about the order being wrong. I accept the different faces for the sake of finally having my closet complete. I get a call that it was the wrong faces installed, they didn't have my handles and I had to reorder new handles or wait months for them to arrive and I could install them myself...yeah no! I order handles that are in stock and 2 weeks later another installer would comes to install the missing cabinet faces as well as my handles. Theyagain have the wrong cabinet faces and no glass. Fast forward 2 months later and I still have not received a call to complete my order. I call to ask when they will come back and was asked "what needed to be completed because they don't have it in the file." I asked to speak to a manager and was told she was not in the office. Called again and was told she was in the field. Called a third time and now she is on vacation. Now my calls are being dodged and I am given excuses each time. Save your money and go elsewhere!!! read more

Just had my second installation by Closets By Design. First, was over a year ago when they installed a built in workstation in our home. It was done perfectly! Even when a drawer later fell off its glides, CBD repaired it quickly and at no cost. We were so impressed that we used them again to design a functional closet in not-the-most functional space. Our closets came out nice and we are happy with them. Installation took all day from about 930 am until about 6 pm. The installers had forgotten a few pieces or did not bring all the right pieces and had to leave twice to pick up pieces. Not sure if that was an error in measuring or not. My experience with this company in California has rarely been good but I've used them and their sister company Closet World frequently despite it. Their PRODUCT is great as is their installers. It's the designers that have always been inconsistently bad. It started that way in Reno with a designer that was difficult to reach but I received a new designer and he was great and created what I needed. Overall my experience with this store in Reno was good and I will most likely call them again for the other closets in the future. read more

They installed some simple shelving in my laundry room. The two installers Bryce and Allan did an excellent job. Not only that, they gave me suggestions that improved the end product, and finished it off in a very detailed manner. Christina in the office did a great job of giving me an estimate. My only complaint was that they charged me a whopping $69 apiece (no typo) for the simple L brackets that held up the shelves. the installers picked them up at Home depot for $8.24 each (no typo) on the way to my house. I do not believe that cocaine has that type of markup. I still gave them five stars because the installers did such a great job. read more

I had an excellent experience with Closets by Design when remodeling a laundry room. Melissa listened carefully to my desires, combined kitchen and closet components to perfect the product, and quickly made minor adjustments as requested. Installation occurred on the exact day as initially estimated. I had four installers (2 days), and they all were punctual, efficient, professional and precise.
