    Afternoon tea

Cliveden is located on a historic manor 1 hour outside of London. The grounds are incredible and makes you feel like you stepped in a Bridgerton novel! Their afternoon tea was solid - tea was good and service was good! The assortment of sandwiches and sweets were okay too. The scones were delicious!

Many superlatives could make this seem over the top or uninformed as a review. However in this case they are justified as the idealized English country break. Basically Cliveden House is a historically significant country estate which has been carefully managed and grown with the additional of an extensive spa facility and additional restaurant in the former stables. Arriving from London is either a relatively quick 20-30min taxi ride from Heathrow airport, or else a short train journey leaving London from Paddington station, changing at Slough for Taplow and then a short cab ride. We took the latter and timed leaving one hotel in Central London and the elapsed time to unpacking the suitcase in Cliveden was a little under 2 hours. The rooms have furnishings which are in keeping with the property and a lavish bathroom including in our case a fireplace - non functioning sadly but very good. For North American visitors remember this is a functioning old home - not a gutted, modern refurbished 5-star hotel. This means some things can be quirky, but if you are thinking about coming the charm factor will overwhelm you. Sitting in the residents lounge is an ideal way to relax and watch the world go by, or indulge in a pre-dinner drink. The main (fine) dining room serves breakfast and dinner with lunch and a more casual dinner menu served at the grill. The spa kitchen is a third option to have a lighter menu either as a respite from health treatment or as an alternative. The spa facility is very modern and the treatments well executed. An indoor swimming pool looked inviting. Add to that walks around the grounds which are adjacent to the Thames River. We arrived on a Sunday and it was busy in the grounds which, as a national trust property allow public access. The house generally speaking however is off limits to non residents and so whilst Sunday was busy, the working week was quite serene - if you have the calendar time I would recommend a week day visit.

Amazing is the only way to describe this National Trust listed house. Steeped in history and having hosted many a famous people from Royals to commoners you feel special being here. Beautiful grand interiors, splendid rooms with antique furniture and great service. The grounds and gardens are amazing and you feel like you are in a different place. Food here is also good. Would come back here in a heartbeat.

Cliveden is sometimes described as the best hotel in the world. I don't know enough places which might fall into that category to judge, but it's certainly the finest I've ever stayed in. The glorious Italianate facade which greets you at the end of the magnificent drive is spectacular, but intimate - and indeed Cliveden still feels like a large country house rather than an hotel. An additional wing overlooking the famous swimming pool adds a number of more standard-sized rooms, but if you stay, take one of the rooms in the main house with their beautiful views across the front garden down towards the Thames. You enter through the main hall - a marvellous panelled room dominated by a huge fireplace and hung with tapestries - and the original portrait of Nancy Astor. It's a perfect place for tea - or drinks before dinner. You can have dinner in the Terrace dining room overlooking the garden, and it's now done up like a pudding in an overrich terracotta but still lacks intimacy. Moreover, the chef still seems to think that the type of nouvelle cuisine where you need a golf trolley to find your way to disparate scraps of food on a vast plate is 'le mode'. The 'haute cuisine' restaurant Waldo's in the cellars is more interesting. There are also some fascinating portraits and photographs in the corridors - including a fine one of Christine Keeler. Breakfast can be taken communally at a huge table in a magnificent room at the end of the house, just as it was when a private home - but sadly now only if you book for a party of ten or more. The pool area behind a lovely old wall has been converted into a full spa with a heated indoor pool, but it's still very easy to imagine the the beginnings of the famous Profumo / Keeler scandal there (for those who don't know about it, there's a brief summary here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profumo_affair ) Despite the grandeur of the house and its associations, it's marvellously relaxed and one quickly settles in to the lifestyle. Surrounded by a large park and formal gardens which are beautifully looked after by the National Trust, there is much to see before returning to the comfort of the a chair by the fire in the library to contemplate starting some scandals of your own.

So, its one of those days when you are going to a fancy place to eat. And this place is steeped in history and of course the profumo affair. There is no doubt that the decor is amazing, it's the giant pictures on the wall, the high ceilings, the mega cars parked outside. But what is the food like. Well the first thing i was amazed at was the price, this stuff is amazing value. 3 courses for £69 and you know its going to be good food and it was. Scallops for starter, perfectly done and one of those sauces that is teased over the dish but so perfectly compliments everything. Lamb with a simple mash is perfect and you could pick any desert really - it all looks good. Good whisky selection if thats your tipple with some good aged single malts. They even had my favourite rum from Anguilla (ever get the chance to try - its called PYRAT RUM - the best in the world). Great service, great location. Its simple stuff but well presented - want to impress somebody then bring them here, if its your mistress then this is perfect place and links nicely with the history

The location is remote. But holy bejeezus...the restaurant! Apparently they hired a new chef recently, and my dinner was unbelievable! I never write reviews, but this was too good not to. A delightful amuse bouche...boiled egg in some sort of bread crumb coating. Dinner started with wonderful beets with a goat cheese mousse, and followed with bream on a light and flavorful risotto...everything was delicious and just perfect. Great wine pairing with a knowledgeable maitre d' who seems to double as a sommelier. There were four parties in the restaurant (granted a Tuesday night)...why are people not eating here?!?!? Perhaps it's because of the marketing, or lack thereof. I searched on google and this restaurant does not appear...it only shows a hotel at this location. I searched on a Yelp, and this restaurant seems not to exist. I had to write a review on the hotel. To share my comments. To Taplow House hotel management...please name this restaurant and promote it! To everyone else...eat here! If you have to stay here to do so, it's worth it. To be clear, the hotel rating is 3-stars, and the restaurant is a 5+-star.

Free wifi for the first 4 hrs but then you have to schlep downstairs to get a pass card for 3£. They should consider just giving them with the room. Ordered room service which was fast. Food was okay, but just had soup and sandwich so wasn't expecting a gourmet meal. Big downside for me is no workout room. Breakfast buffet was included in the rate and seemed decent, but it didn't open until 7 am and I had to hit the road. Maybe consider opening at 6 or 6:30. Clearly this place is for weddings and such, but I would stay here again on business travel .

In that spirit, I offer the following kind words…read moreabout the Thames Riviera Hotel: * The room I wound up in was fine; and * The riverside location is attractive. And with that, the positives will end. I hiked 10+ miles to reach this hotel which a travel agency booked for me. As I approached I could tell, even from the outside, that the place had some deferred maintenance. Stepping inside clarified my observation: the carpets looked worn and the interior shabby and tired. The woman at the front desk told us to wait, pointing outside to a gentleman smoking. "He'll help you when he gets back" she offered. Help here is a relative word. The smoker checked us in, showed us to our room, and mentioned that he'd upgraded us to a river view. As he walked out I walked to the far corner of the room to look out the window. Turning my neck at a 90 degree angle I could see and hear the car-filled bridge and spot the teensiest slice of the River Thames. Opening the window revealed that the window hardware was broken and a quick look around the room revealed the same shabby, tired interior that had greeted me at the front desk. This room was not acceptable. A new room was requested (we blamed the traffic noise) and keys were given to a satellite building behind the main building. After hauling luggage up several flights and walking down a hallway with stained carpet and sour smells, I stood outside our new room. Its handle had a "do not disturb" sign hanging from it and I could hear people inside. This too was not acceptable (obviously). A return to the front desk brought a bit of attitude, as though this was some big favor, requesting not to stay in an already occupied room. The third room? It was fine. Also in the satellite building, it actually had a balcony, a river view from there, was quiet, and had no traffic noise. It was charmless but by this time it was clear that charm wasn't this hotel's specialty. Breakfast, like all places in the UK, is included and with the exception of the fresh fruit and the pastries this breakfast was my least favorite of any I had on this trip. I didn't care for the taste of their eggs or potatoes. Maidenhead (birthplace of Theresa May!) is an odd town but surely there must be better lodging options here than the Thames Riviera Hotel. For every reason above, I'd be very reluctant to recommend you stay here but if you insist, ask for an unoccupied room in the satellite building, one with a river view and a balcony, and plan to eat your breakfast elsewhere.

The bathroom had a nice shower with one of those rain shower heads and the water got really hot. The shower door was one of those half doors that doesn't close. That seems a bit weird but it worked. The bathroom has a towel warmer but mine was not working which was unfortunate. It also got a bit stuffy in my room at night luckily the window was able to open a little bit, enough for fresh air! You are then shown personally to your room and a plate of fresh fruit is delivered as well as a plate of chocolates! I noticed that everything in the hotel is monogrammed with the Fredrick's brand. Very impressive I stayed in a suite and the £30 for upgrade is worth it for a sumptuous room, lovely bathroom and toiletries.
