I and the rest of my 91 year Mom's progeny are very grateful she decided to retire from New York…read more nearly ten years ago before Mom thought she was ready for a retirement community. She chose to buy into Collington Life Care Community http://www.collington.com/ [non-profit CCRC] in [Mitchellville/Bowie, Md] in suburban Washington, D.C. Right away Mom plunged into lots of activities, planted the garden around her gracious cottage, took exercise and literature classes from Prince Georges Community College, on Collington Campus, and made friends with other active retirees and the very caring staff. She didn't partake of birdwatching, vegetable gardening, swimming, nearby golf courses, and some other outdoor activities. She chose to take on leadership roles in the Collington community and delivered Meals on Wheels. http://keepingupwithcollington.org/ When she broke her hip she was received rigorous and effective rehab while temporarily resident in the health center. When we 'made her' give up her car she was able to get to the Metro, shopping, doctors' appointments, Kennedy Center, Arena Center, and more via the Collington shuttle. When she had a small stroke she again moved back to he health center to receive rigorous rehab. Now she is back in her cottage, this time with a few hours of aides to help keep up her activities. Now as we spend more time walking the halls and grounds with her it's so gratifying to encounter numerous friends among the residents and staff who cheer on her recovery. I wish such stimulating, safe, and nurturing communities would be accessible for the growing upcoming senior population.

She lived in a beautiful cottage where birdwatching, gardening, music, walking her dog and making new friends filled her days. Using Collington transportation she had season tickets for the opera, the symphony, Arena Theater as well as enjoying many other cultural events at Collington and beyond. My 3 siblings and I fell in love with Collington's embrace of our mother and willingness to allow us to fully participate in Mother's life. In many, many ways through the years it became obvious to us that Collington valued its residents and wanted to encourage family involvement. The fabulous Sunday brunches, instituted by the head of dining services, Eli Ayoub are one of many examples. On any given Sunday one sees dozens of families, including children, grandchildren, even great-grandchildren enjoying the brunch together, feeding ducks on the lake. In these past two years, after a nasty fall, our mother was confined to assisted living. The care she received on Chesapeake was always compassionate and respectful. We grew to love each and every one of her caregivers. Again, we were encouraged to be there as much as possible. When the final days arrived our large family did vigil for a week. Instead of encouraging us to limit our visits, Eli arranged for a large hospitality tray to be delivered outside

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Karen for Kids. My son has used home nursing since he was 2 yrs old. We have…read morebeen with several agencies over the last 12 years, and Karen for Kids is by far the best. The office employees are extremely professional, accommodating, and polite. They truly make you feel welcomed and that they care about your concerns. I think what I love the most is how they don't make you feel like just another case, but rather like part of their family. I also love the fact that the owner, Karen is so involved. I love her no nonsense approach to nurses sleeping on the job. She is very professional, warm and friendly. I love being able to contact her for anything. The nurses that they send to you are very professional and pleasant. They are very knowledgeable and they take excellent care of our son. They are truly about the art of nursing. In the past we've been with agencies that would just send anybody out to you. But I love how Delores and Jeremy at Karen for Kids, hand pick the nurses that will best fit in your home. Things happen and nurses have to call out or even take vacation, but they are always able to keep our shifts covered. Whenever there is a concern about the nurses care, Ashley is on it. We recently had a very minor concern about my son's oral hygiene, and she was ready to come out and sit with the nurses and train them on teeth brushing. I didn't want the nurses to be offended so I decided to just conveniently be brushing his teeth in the mornings when the nurses arrive, and now they all brush his teeth the way that I like. So to sum everything up, I am so happy to have found Karen for Kids. I am very very particular when it comes to our son's care, and I am so happy to finally be with an agency that is just as particular as I am. Being part of Karen for Kids has been a great relief and joy for me and my family.

Shortly after arriving at the facility, he developed rage and combative tendencies. The facility paired with his team of doctors and got the situation under control. During his stay, I am well aware that he was the patient from Hell. He was treated with such dignity and respect by all of the staff. The nurses are amazing people. They are experienced and intuitive. The staff are truly the best of humanity. I learned so many care tricks from them!! They are supportive to the patient and the family. Their social service person was responsive to all of my calls. Your decision as to where to put your loved one should be based on care. The pictures on the sites want to sell you on the amenities like dining rooms that you never use. It does not show you the hearts of the care providers. This place deserves so much more than the 5 stars that I am leaving.

A family member was visiting him and witness the entire incident. She kept asking them to call the ambulance because he wasn't moving, they were taking their time and just saying his vitals were good. The paramedic came and said this is not normal for someone to be unresponsive. When he arrived at the hospital and checked out they said he was having a seizure. The jury for the Prince George's County Circuit Court found Largo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center breached the standards of care in its care of Helen Hansford, an 83-year-old woman who weighed 112 pounds at the time of her admission to the facility in June 2020. By January 2021, Hansford's weight had dropped to 81 pounds, according to the complaint. In addition to finding Largo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center acted negligently in its care and treatment of Hansford, the jury also found that Hansford's daughter, Helena Hansford, had a wrongful death claim for her mother's death. Of the $8.5 million award, $8 million is for Hansford's estate and $500,000 is for Helena Hansford. The award will be reduced to $845,000 per Maryland's cap on noneconomic damages, according to Brian Brown, counsel for the representative of Hansford's estate and Hansford's family. Brown said Hansford lost 25% of her body weight at the facility, which failed to put her back on a blood thinner after surgery. As a result, Hansford got a blood clot that went to her lungs and brain, causing her death. "For (our clients) to be able to tell their story and reveal to the public how this facility abused their mother and grandmother, that was the most satisfying part -- that we gave them the opportunity to do that," Brown said in a phone interview.
