With the landscape surrounding the Mill and the tasty food inside, it is very difficult to rate Clifton Mill anything but a 5 Star. Had a tasty Reuben with Fries today along with a Hot Chocolate. The food was served hot and complete. The dining area was clean, spacious, and well lit. After our lunch, we browsed their gift shop that contains many unique items and gifts including pancake mixes made on premises. It's an okay place. The atmosphere around the mill is wonderful. The mill itself could use a deep cleaning and the menu could use a little bit of an update. I came here the day after the 4th of July with my family. We were told it would be a 30 minute wait. I understood because it was the day after a holiday and most people are still off work. We ended up walking around the premise and even got a private tour. After that, we were still waiting, but finally got seated an hour later. It was clear they are understaffed which is not their fault but still a little frustrating when we are told 30 minutes. Once we were seated, everything went very quick and smoothly. I was disappointed to hear they were out of the gluten free pancakes but the waitress helped me pick an alternative. Our waitress was amazing and got us in and out very efficiently. I have been coming to Clifton Mill for a few years. It is not exactly close to where I lived, but it was always worth the drive. The scenery surrounding the restaurant, the mill and the restaurant itself is what earned this place 4 stars from me (see my picture). If you are lucky enough to get one of the tables that overlooks the Clifton Gorge and the creek that runs through it. It can make for a very romantic meal. Even if you do not get one of those tables, you can still go out to the covered porch and sit on the rocking chairs and enjoy the sounds of the creek and watermill. Afterwards, be sure to walk over to see the little wood cabin and covered bridge (!). Since I love the day time views here, I've only had the breakfast and lunch items here. (I do believe the revamped dinner menu is a bit more fancy and exciting.) The breakfast and lunch are not too memorable. The pancakes are indeed HUGE. They really did put the words "pan" and "cake" to good use. One pancake is more than 1/2 inch thick and 10 inches across. The burgers and sandwiches are quite standard and nothing to write about. Service is friendly and adequate. But the view itself is enough to keep me coming back. read more

Several guys met there for lunch during an event on a Monday. The scenery was spectacular on the grist mill wheel and the stream. Server was friendly,knowledgeable, and very good at her job! They had a rotating soup menu but was out of the bean. I was notified they had a chicken Gumbo so I ordered that! Oh boy was that a twist of fate in my favor! Chicken Gumbo was some of the best soup I ever had! It even had Okra which I love! I had a half sandwich that was a BLT. Holy cow this mill is so pretty at night during the Holidays. A bit of a drive for us but decided to head in up and see the lights. Got to see(and talk!) to good old Saint Nick as he climbs out of his little workshop and up and through the chimney. It's quite entertaining for the kids(ok me a little as well) to be able to see such a perfect Santa that's not a robot or just sitting in a chair and having kids come and go to talk to them on being good or bad. Remember those days before Covid!? Living the life back then. The magic just isn't with Santa. It's all of these lights and little basic daily living activities they have set up. Imagine a drive in movie, a race track, a football game and a couple small trains that run around the little park. It really is kind of cool. They try their best at Social distancing, parking was a bit of a trek and the line was crazy long but went somewhat speedy. This place has a beautiful view and a great little gift shop. Not to mention friendly service. But I wasn't crazy about the food we tried. The Mill Fries were absolutely loaded with cheese sauce, but it just wasn't for me. The sauce reminded of the fake goopy stuff you get at a sports stadium. However, my husband thought that's what made it delicious! We also tried the potato bowls. They're the same thing as potato skins, but the potatoes are cut the opposite way. Then they're filled with shredded cheese and bacon and served with a side of sour cream. I loved the crispyness of the potato and the great amount of bacon, but it was very under seasoned. Very picturesque! I went early to beat the crowds and I am glad I did. It was busy when I got there but as I was leaving the crowds were pouring in. Go early! I walked around the property and I was able to take the picture attached via the covered bridge. There is a nice small area inside selling crafts and antiques. I had breakfast when visited. I ordered the blueberry pancakes. The pancakes were huge, the size of a dinner plate. The pancakes were good just a little dry. There was no room on the plate to pour syrup without it coming off the plate. While visiting be sure to check out the gorge. Enjoy your visit! read more

You can walk off the 17,651 calories you consumed at lunch with a walk in the gorge. The gorge is something remarkable. Simon Kenton lept across it just down stream of the mill while fleeing the Shawnee Indians. Blue Jacket caught up with him and dropped him with a blow from a calumet. The Shawnee buried a hoard of silver in the area when fleeing from Mad Anthony Wayne. No there is no silver in Ohio. It doesnt form in the kind of rocks we have. I am a geologist so I know this for a fact. Go to the mill. Spend lots of money, hike the gorge then go to Young's Dairy for a milkshake. It's a classic Cornlandia thing to do. read more

Worst restaurant ever. I am 71 and have ate at many restaurant in my life. I have not liked their service, but my wife likes the location. I go because she wants to. We checked the hours of service before we went, the close at 4 PM, we were there at 3:15 they said they weren't seating any more customers by then. We drove about half an hour to get there, they still said no. There were not many people there. One time they even asked my wife and her friend to move one time after they seated her, because someone else wanted her seat. If you do t mind being treated like crap, be my guest. Looking for a hearty breakfast in a historic setting? Clifton Mill has you covered. The Mill is part restaurant, part store and part Christmas-y tourist trap. We came for breakfast in April, and couldn't help but notice all of the lights and leftovers from the holiday season. It's clear that the holidays are a big deal around these parts, but that's no reason not to drop by in the off season. We showed up for breakfast at 10:45 on a Saturday. I was immediately caught off guard by the parking situation--there's no real lot, so you've got to grab a spot on the street in the weird little historic neighborhood surrounding the Mill. Not too difficult but don't expect to park out front on the weekend. We went inside expecting the worst, but found only a few parties in line. Our group of four was seated within about 10 minutes. Our waitress took great care of us, promptly taking orders and delivering drinks. She was also great about refilling water and coffee throughout the meal. We ordered a mix of breakfast and lunch dishes. My husband got the biscuits & gravy, which was spot-on delicious. The biscuits were a mile high and dense but fluffy. I got the two apple-cinnamon pancakes, which were enormous. I ate the equivalent of one. Aside from being enormous they weren't particularly remarkable, but cooked through and crisp on the outside. Stopped in here with the hubby for breakfast. We arrived around 10 am and had a short 10 minute wait. The place isn't hard to find, but it was a little bit of a challenge to find a parking spot nearby. We ate breakfast on a Sunday morning and noticed that the one side of the dining room emptied rather quickly. The seats by the windows are the best!! The hubby tried his hand at the two layers of pancakes. He ate half of them and he was done. I tried the Eggs Benedict but noticed that the biscuit that the ham and egg were on was a little bit dry. I found myself trying to find extra hollandaise sauce and egg yolk to help with the dryness of the biscuit. I tried some of my husband's apple cinnamon pancakes and they were very good. Pros: the lights were beautiful. The Christmas music was nice. Cons: Being from out of town, we had no idea what to expect, such as a 20 minute wait to pull into a muddy parking spot, a 45 minute wait in the cold for the lights to come on ( they're lit at 6pm), walking in mud, hundreds of people gathered into one small space and the 35 minute drive from the parking lot to the main road leaving. The mill is owned by a family and still grinds grain using hydropower. Inside the mill is a restaurant and gift shop. The flour for the pancakes and breads is ground in that very mill. The restaurant and gift shop are open year-round. The restaurant is open year-round. At Christmas though is when the magic really happens...the mill is lit up with thousands of Christmas lights. We went with the family when we were kids, for dates in high school and college, and with the family again as 5 grown-ups. There's a miniature village, a huge Santa Claus collection, a display of antique toys, and a display of The Ohio State University playing football complete with The Best Damn Band in the Land doing Script Ohio. There's a covered bridge that does a light show in time to music (it's pretty darn cool!). Definitely worth the price of admission and a drive to Dayton area to make some holiday memories with your family. read more

Extremely disappointed. Drove over an hour, yes we called before we set out. Mill was closed for tours. Would not recommend eating. Ordered a Ruben it was not sliced corned beef but looked like a slab cut from a can of mashed corn beef and there was an over abundance of sauerkraut. Coffee was good. Most places it is pretty watery tasting once you add cream, but theirs wasn't like that. The bacon was AMAZING!!!! Scrambled eggs turned out great. You know how they can be a bit slimy in restaurants, but not the case here. I agree with previous reviews about having to cut the pancake with a knife. You shouldn't have to do that. I won't be ordering them again. To tough, way to much baking soda taste and to thick for my liking. Clifton Mill is one of those places that is much more of an experience than the label of "restaurant" suggests. Set on the side of a beautiful gorge in the blip of a town that is Clifton, the mill is a throwback to the early days of Ohio as a predominantly agricultural state. This is echoed in the decor and menu of the mill with items like "Farmers Mush" or the "Farmers omelette" featured throughout. What makes the Mill an experience is being able to sit at a turn-of-the-century farm table and look out through the old paned windows at the driving waterfalls that fuel the river rushing through the gorge below. What makes it an awesome experience is the delicious food and drink you're enjoying while you take in these views. Pro tip: Christmas at Clifton Mill is one of the can't miss experiences in Ohio. About a year ago, my wife went on a group hike in the area around Clifton and mentioned that we should go back together for lunch at the Clifton Mill sometime. We finally did. The area around the mill is very calm and peaceful, and the Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve is definitely worth a visit. The mill itself has a giant waterwheel that is claimed to be the original, which still works, and the owners have maintained the rustic appearance of the place. The gift shop sells the random rustic home decor and candies that you find in old town gift shops or in Cracker Barrel. I give the restaurant 4 stars because of the ambiance, not for the food. At lunch you can order breakfast food or from a variety of sandwiches, burgers, salads, etc. I had a Reuben sandwich, which came with potato chips, and my wife had a Gouda chicken sandwich that also came with chips. Her sandwich was a plain small chicken breast with a slice of what looked to be Kroger sliced Gouda cheese melted on top, on a bun. Nothing special at all. She said it was fine but nothing great. My Reuben sandwich was ok, I guess, but for what I paid I expected more. The bread was toasted a little too crispy for my taste, and the paltry amount of meat between the slices of bread made it feel more like a bread sandwich than an actual Reuben. I noticed that for the burgers you have to pay extra if you want tomato, onion, etc., so keep that in mind if you're in the mood for a burger. Our server was nice and seemed happy to be working there. In fact, everyone there seemed very courteous and happy. Would I go back? Maybe, if I'm in the area; I definitely would not go out of my way to visit the place again. Note: the restrooms are in the back corner of the restaurant, down a narrow corridor. The little village of Clifton Mill is a little out of the way, but the old mill is unique in this setting. The lights are engaging an worth driving a couple of hours for. To view the lights show properly be sure to locate yourself at the beginning along the rail fence near the gorge, approximately halfway between the covered bridge and the mill. Weekends are crowded, it's best to go on weekdays. I'd prefer to be there when the gate opens. read more

I have not been to the restaurant, this review is for the Christmas Display. My boyfriend and I took my kids and it's $10/per person! So, basically I spent $60 to look at lights which is something I can do for free from the comfort of my car. We went on a Thursday night and it was SO crowded I couldn't even get a good view of the lights because people just pack themselves in and don't move to let anyone else look. There is a train and town set up that lights up and has moving parts. Very cute for the kids to see, but again, no one budges once they are in place. Make sure you walk through the shed full of creepy Santa's. We tried it. We can say we saw it. No need to go back. read more

We came here last night and I 100% recommend coming for the Christmas lights. Over 3 million lights here and its absolutely beautiful. It gets pretty busy on weekends I hear but the Tuesday we went wasnt bad at all. If you have kids they'll love it. Theres a huge miniature train track and village in the middle and everything is lit with lights and moving parts. I cant imagine how much time went into everything. You can also see Santa working in his workshop and theres a nice sized gift shop as well. Food was pretty good, I got the chili and I'd definitely have another bowl. It was served with an excellent piece of cornbread too. The people were extremely friendly as well. Definitely recommend if you need something fun for the family read more

For years I've always wanted to visit Clifton Mill, especially during Christmas. The Historic Clifton Mill is one of the largest powered grist mills still operating and their holiday light show is spectacular! There is a synchronized lights and music show that takes place every 30 minutes so if you don't get a good spot, just hang out for the next one! Be sure to look out for Santa as he climbs the chimney and be sure to stop in the store to grab a snack (the pretzel is delicious and the cider is yummy!) read more
