This was a unique and wonderful stay planned as a late-surprise-joint-birthday celebration for my…read morepartner and I! Arriving after dark, my partner parked on the street and walked down the Art alley to ensure that he had the right spot and knew where to park. I could see that we were in a small town with some local shops and a small theater but tried not to look around and ruin the surprise. Once the venue was verified, we pulled into the grassy parking area behind The Cell Block, located the keys, and found our way to the front door. I could tell that the place was small, dated with a very modern makeover, and had a rooftop area. I was so excited to see inside!! With the heavy, suctioning swoop of the metal door, the prison-turned-boutique-hotel interior was revealed and I immediately congratulated my partner on such an awesome find!! Not one detail was ignored! We took pictures like paparazzi before even putting our bags down over sheer excitement at this overhauled, 1930s, 2-cell, cinderblock city jail where hard steel met white walls and ceiling, delicate flowers, tinted glass, crisp linens, and windows on every side. I have so much to say about this place - from its prison/criminal-themed music records to the rooftop gas fire-pit to the curious alley cats to the sparkling clean wine glasses and complimentary wine and Balcones single malt...it all made for such a special and adventurous stay! While this might be a one-time special occasion for us, we are very eager to treat my parents to a visit some day and have already recommended it to a couple of friends!

The place was clean and just the right size for my wife and I. Being city folks you forget how dark it is out in the country at nights. It was nice. We signed up for these adventures to make the weekend even more fun: 1. Feed baby kangaroo(Bodhi). This was about a 30 minute session where we got to feed him a bottle and kibble. It really was an amazing experience. 2. Bucket of food and self guided feeding of animals. We walked the property and hid to feed so many animals. All of the animals were friendly toward people. They were all very good motivated. We encountered a giraffe, donkeys, zebras, horses, cows, pigs, dwarf steers, camels, emu, deer, buffalo and more. The animals were often trying to bully their way to the front of the line. The cow Oreo who has not skipped a meal was always front of the line. 3. Afternoon safari ride in ATV. This was a fun ride around the property. Did not see any new animals but had a great time. The cows out at pasture were thrilled to be fed. 4. Giraffe encounter and meal. This was a little expensive but I would spend it again. The giraffes were super friendly and personable. We wanted to take them home because they were so much fun. The guide, experience and never felt rushed made this worth it. Our guide was top notch. I think her name was Jackie but could be wrong.

Great visit and super friendly and knowledgeable staff, we will visit again in the futureread more

Getting to Spot: Little hard to find (depending on app you…read moreuse) Roads are rough, would recommend SUV Parking is grass but during rain, gets muddy Farmhouse cabin: Good views Have to take stairs to 2nd story (if your room is upstairs) AC window units don't keep the room consistent temp Shower is literally less than 5ft away from bed -just a curtain separated water from same bed -shower floor made of rounded pebble rocks (not as bad as some say it is). -hot water is fast and consistent. Really nice. No Closet, limited amount of places to hang clothes and towels for drying purposes. TV didn't seem to work Good views of parking lot and farmland beyond Easy walk to even hall on property Shades are questionable, people can see into room if shades aren't aligned properly. One keurig coffee pod maker. Works well 1 sink only, Lots of furniture to put clothes on, night stands too. Refrig is 4ft tall, limited space, worked as expected Laundry hamper provided in room. Event Hall: A/C worked well Plenty of seating Shuffleboard in poor shape, had mold etc on it Pool table ok, slanted due to concrete it's on. Sound/PA system is awesome Bar area really nice iCE machine works; Sliding glass convenient-style fridge in kitchen, works Full kitchen available Spring full (NOT QUEEN) x2 in room - horrible to sleep on. Felt every spring, every movement about spring'd out of bed (bouncy) Right next to window ac unit, got frozen Other bed next to shower, couldn't feel AC Other info: pretty expensive even with big group, didn't feel it was worth it for the rest expected. ATV was reportedly $500 for a day (no thanks). Wildlife on fenced side of property.

Pre-Trip Experience:…read more Before our visit, I spoke with Shy over the phone, and she was incredibly knowledgeable and patient. She answered all my questions and got me even more excited about everything the ranch had to offer. Getting There: We visited for my wife's birthday, bringing along our 11-year-old and 2-year-old. We arrived on a Tuesday and stayed until Thursday--it was quiet at night and incredibly peaceful. Traveling from Round Rock, the GPS guided us directly to the property without any issues. The drive was enjoyable, with scenic views of cows and lush greenery. A few days before arrival, we received an email with everything we needed--gate code, Wi-Fi password, parking instructions, and more--making check-in smooth. Upon arrival at our cabin, we were greeted by the sight of zebras and Jack the camel, which was an incredible surprise! The Camellia Cabin: First Impressions: Cool, cozy, and well-designed--felt like a tiny home. Living Area: Spacious fridge and ample cabinet space. Stove available for cooking. TV, loveseat, and a comfortable chair. Loft Area: Two full-sized beds (low ceiling but cozy). Bathroom: Clean with a sliding door. Water was consistently hot (bring your own soap--mentioned in the email). Main Bedroom: Full-sized bed with two closets. The AC is positioned above the bed--great for cooling down, but be prepared for direct airflow. Extras: Fireplace for s'mores. Plug-in bug zapper. Plenty of firewood provided. The Property: Beautiful and spacious with plenty to explore! Wildlife: Baby goats, peacocks, and geese freely roaming the grounds. Outdoor Activities: Swings and grassy areas perfect for picnics. Bikes available for riding around the property. Lovely pool area for relaxing. The Extras: Safari Tour (Highly Recommended!) A 600-acre tour behind a gated section of the property. Our guide (whose name I sadly can't recall, but I believe it started with "A") was amazing--his passion and knowledge of the animals made the experience unforgettable. We saw wildebeests, bison, red stags, llamas, and more. When it started to rain, our guide quickly pulled my into a shed to keep us dry and continued sharing fascinating details about the animals and property. A must-do experience--kudos to the staff! Horseback Riding (Trip Highlight!) Just outside the main gate (about 9 yards to the left). We were greeted by Kenneth and his associate, who were welcoming and professional. My wife rode Oil Money, while I was paired with Geronimo--my first time on a horse! I was nervous at first, but Geronimo was a pro--he knew exactly what he was doing, even if I didn't! The ride lasted over an hour, and we felt like we got every penny's worth. Final Thoughts: Moon River Ranch exceeded our expectations in every way. The staff was friendly, helpful, and always available to answer questions. The property was stunning and offered so much to do. We truly made the most of our two-day stay and can't wait to return! If you're looking for a great place to eat, check out The Butcher's Cellar in Waco--about 30 minutes from the property. Fantastic food and well worth the drive! Highly recommend this incredible getaway--thank you, Moon River Ranch!

We stumbled across this place online. I don't even know where to begin. Best vacation we've had in…read morea long time. We got so lucky to have a bunch of rain before our stay and the kids played in the creek all weekend, chasing frogs and crayfish. Waterfall was incredible. Cabin was super clean, with great amenities we didn't expect - just perfect. The owners were over the top sweet and even texted us pics of the kids playing in the creek. Of course we did the Fossil Rim trip and Dinosaur Valley stop while we were here. We will 100% make this an annual visit.

We have stayed at these cabins for years now and never had any issues. However, we stayed last…read moreweekend and there was a terrible storm Sunday night that knocked out power to the entire town overnight. We spent an uncomfortable night without power (hot) and being woken by the beds creaking loudly every time someone moved (bathroom door squeaked as well). The storm damaged the roof and shingles were everywhere the next morning. I filled out and left a comment card the next morning letting them know that the night was not the best due to no electricity, etc and also mentioned my frustration with being charged extra for the kids (which had not occurred the last few years). I did suggest they add a backup generator. I was a little irritated as we spent $191 a night to be super uncomfortable and not sleep. However, I did not ask for a refund, include anything personal in my comments, or post anything online. We left the cabin that morning after making sure (by flashlight) that it was clean and we had all our belongings. As always, I made sure the dishes were done, trash taken out, and bundled all used linen in one spot. We left the cabin in good condition. At 3 that afternoon, I received an extremely disrespectful message stating that my comments on the card were "irrelevant" and that they had people waiting in line to book their cabins. The owners went on to state that I was being put on a list of people not to rent to ("...which only includes scammers and those who abuse our property"). Then they stated that the main mattress was ruined and soaked with urine. As we do have a 5 year old (who doesn't wet the bed at all usually, but hey I guess it could happen), I stated that we had no idea the mattress was wet but I did not argue and was willing to pay for mattress cleaning. HOWEVER, they went on to say that the cabin was left in "atrocious" condition and that they had to pay their cleaning lady 3x the normal cleaning cost due to the need for "heavy duty cleaning". This is when I realized something was terribly wrong. We left the cabin in very good condition with no known issues. I queried as to what was wrong with the cabin and was told that there were "stains everywhere, pee all over the bathroom, and then the soaked mattress". They even went on to say they had "never had a cabin left in this condition". I knew at this point that something was off. I asked for specifics on stains and the "liquid in the bathroom" and asked for pictures. I received no response. When we got home, I checked my 5 year old's pajamas and there was no urine or urine smell on them. I texted the owners back and inquired as to whether the damage sustained to the roof (shingles were everywhere!!) might have caused a leak which led to the ruined mattress, stains(??), and the liquid in the bathroom which they claimed was urine. I again received no response. I then stated that they make sure to charge my credit card for the damages separately as I would be disputing them...which I currently am. This is the most bizarre situation I have ever experienced. I can't decide if this is retaliation for the negative comment card or if they really did experience roof leakage (which they think is pee??!!). Not to mention the extreme rudeness and I professionalism of the texts zi was sent. Needless to say, this is our very last stay here.
