Arriving after dark, my partner parked on the street and walked down the Art alley to ensure that he had the right spot and knew where to park. I could see that we were in a small town with some local shops and a small theater but tried not to look around and ruin the surprise. Once the venue was verified, we pulled into the grassy parking area behind The Cell Block, located the keys, and found our way to the front door. I could tell that the place was small, dated with a very modern makeover, and had a rooftop area. I was so excited to see inside!! With the heavy, suctioning swoop of the metal door, the prison-turned-boutique-hotel interior was revealed and I immediately congratulated my partner on such an awesome find!! Not one detail was ignored! We took pictures like paparazzi before even putting our bags down over sheer excitement at this overhauled, 1930s, 2-cell, cinderblock city jail where hard steel met white walls and ceiling, delicate flowers, tinted glass, crisp linens, and windows on every side. I have so much to say about this place - from its prison/criminal-themed music records to the rooftop gas fire-pit to the curious alley cats to the sparkling clean wine glasses and complimentary wine and Balcones single malt...it all made for such a special and adventurous stay! While this might be a one-time special occasion for us, we are very eager to treat my parents to a visit some day and have already recommended it to a couple of friends!

The Giraffe barn is attached to one side of the house, and their pasture is on the other side. It is the most fabulous "Barndominium" with incredible finishes and clearly thoughtfully designed. That experience alone was mind-blowing.... however we also had the Gold Packages and were able to experience everything the ranch had to offer! Zebras, Capybaras, Kangaroos, Otters, Deer, Homer the Dromedary!!! Everywhere you turned there were more animals and more experiences offered. My children and I were in absolute animal heaven and will be thrilled to return. I will say, our vacation was expensive and it did not disappoint. However, I do believe you can absolutely visit this ranch on a budget.... Probably one of the best experiences was their ranch safari and that is a nominal price and totally worth it! You can see the entire property and all of the animals on the safari trip. Additionally they have fantastic cabins that are themed, and if you have children under the age of 10, the pirate themed cabins are beyond your wildest imagination.... as far as I am aware all of the sleeping accommodations include kitchens so you can absolutely cook for your family instead of paying for the delicious ranch food. That said... Chef Alan is phenomenal and out of this world excellent chef. Each meal was made with love and artistry. The staff at Blue Hills Ranch all go above and beyond to create lasting memories for you. I absolutely recommend this experience as a NOT TO BE MISSED event! We are already planning a return in October/November depending on availability . Cannot wait. Wow, Rough Creel Lodge is nothing like anything I've experience before. It is amazing. The exceptionally friendly attendant at the entry gate set the standard of excellence seen at every interaction throughout the weekend. The two bedroom/two bathroom cabin was luxurious, clean and very comfortable. The cosy grouping of cabins is a short distance form the main lodge giving it a secluded feel, but close to all the amenities and access to an impressive number of activities. The food was exceptional, with lots of delicious options. Every aspect of our stay far exceeded my expectations. A definite five-star-stay! We got so lucky to have a bunch of rain before our stay and the kids played in the creek all weekend, chasing frogs and crayfish. Waterfall was incredible. Cabin was super clean, with great amenities we didn't expect - just perfect. The owners were over the top sweet and even texted us pics of the kids playing in the creek. We totally lucked out and felt like we won the Lottery when we walked in. The proprietor met us on the little road heading down (while she was feeding the chickens, with a longhorn standing ominously behind her). Then - a huge fireplace with burning logs to welcome us in. We arrived late afternoon and just took a brief walk around the grounds on a few of the many trails. The Prayer chapel has a custom made cross with a stained glass dragonfly. The serenity of the scenic landscape is really something. This would be a perfect getaway for a group or spiritual retreat. Truly an amazing feeling - like you've just come home! Can't wait to return when the seasons change.

The outside is a little plain but the inside is a vintage dream yet with every modern convenience you need. We happened to call last minute and the owner met us there in 10 minutes and explained the history of the house. She and her husband bought it and restored it back to its original beauty. There's a photo album of everything they did to restore the house and the antiques she purchased for the rooms are stunning. Can't say enough about how cool this house is!
