My bed situation that was horrendous

I went there and I did not feel safe with the sleeping arrangement they had for me considering the fact the nurses office was not inside of the house but attatched outside. They proceeded to put these hard chairs together for me to sleep on with a blanket and pillows that had hairs on them which were indeed not mine. The two girls working in office were indeed talking shit most likely on their computer about me in front of my face. The WiFi is jank as hell and doesn't work. Horrible staff never again zero star repulsive do better do not come here the house is nasty as hell smells rancid. The guy picking me up from the airport port who transported me his car smelt like cigs as well. Just don't go here.

Cliffside is amazing. The living space, food, nursing staff, housekeepers, management, Drs and counselors/ therapists. I would not go anywhere else. Don't waste your time trying other places as I had.

My adult son had been in two prior outpatient rehabs. When insurance covered his treatment at Cliffside, I was initially skeptical of such a luxury experience with weekly massages, sound baths, acupuncture, cleaning and laundry service, fresh, organic cooked meals, outings, yoga, trips to the gym and spectacular views. It seemed more like a vacation I thought. But, it turned out to be just what my son needed. With these experiences and the small ratio of clients:providers, he was able to finally open up and start addressing the pain he had been numbing with substances. Tanya, his case manager, helped him with his needs and setting him up with outpatient care. Roxan, his therapist, was a tremendous help to him. Family sessions are available and the nurses and tech staff also offered great support. My son didn't want to leave! My only suggestion would be to have online family meetings available in the evenings/after work hours.

Beach walk.... therapy without walls.

What can I tell you about Cliffside Malibu? First, it is the first truly luxury rehab facility I've ever stayed at. I loved everything about it. The catered food has been incredible (I've been here two of my four week stay). I don't think they've ever repeated a meal, except for spaghetti and even then it was different meat or vegetable toppings. The staff is amazing, especially the techs and the house manager (Gretchen) at Cliffside Malibu Access (one of several different Cliffside locations. The view is stunning all day long and is therapeutic in and of itself. I think if you come here with reasonable expectations you will be more than satisfied. Remember, you're coming to a six bed facility, so personalities are going to come into play. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the other clients, but I love meeting new people in general. The weekly massage is awesome and I look forward to it. Yoga is also very relaxing and Brian and Alison are awesome teachers. Alison also provides the weekly soundbath, a truly unique, healing experience if you aren't familiar with it. They keep the groups to a minimum and I appreciate that. You meet with your personal therapist, case manager, and after care manager once a week as well. The therapist might be more often if you need it. The beds are super comfortable and are changed often. You can send your laundry out almost every day and get it back in 24 hours, cleaned and wrapped. It's all included. You go on beach walks and Cliffside even buys the Starbucks for the trip home from the beach. You are only minutes from the beach by car. The view from the cliff is amazing. I will miss hanging out here a lot. Oh, you also go to a movie every Sunday, and it's all covered by Cliffside, even your concessions. They go above and beyond, at least above and beyond my expectations! Remember, though....you're in rehab with people in various stages of detox and recovery. As long as you're open and empathetic to that, you'll love it here.

Before arrival, I called the toll-free number and checked if they took BCBS. At the time, they did, but refused to get pre-approval for the inpatient stay until I arrived. I was very high and out of it, so I barely remember the checkin process. I do remember being picked up at the airport in a GMC Denali. Also, while you are in the office doing paperwork, staff members unpack your bags during the search for contraband. The next thing you know, all your belongings are neatly tucked away in the closet, dressers, and night stand. That was a very nice touch. I self referred to Cliffside and entered treatment in November of 2017. I experienced a very comfortable detox off of benzodiazepines and opiates with suboxone and phenobarbital. You are not required to participate in groups or any programming for the first three days. For the first few days, you are forced to give-up your electronics. That kind of sucks, but is tolerable. The staff was very nice, accommodating, and responsive to your needs and requests. They are very client-centered. More so if you are paying cash rather than utilizing insurance. I did notice a difference in the way clients were treated based on this factor. All med refills are handled by Kramer's, who charges a fee for delivery and repackaging pills into bubble pack mediset. This gets expensive and isn't usually covered by insurance. Again, the staff readily accepted my objection to this arrangement and picked up my prescriptions from the local CVS or Walgreen's. The day starts with coffee and breakfast, which are prepared by the chef. You also do a daily morning meeting where clients are informed of appointments, and staff goes over that day's schedule. Before group sessions start, depending on the day, you can participate in yoga or exercise with a trainer. There are two group sessions that are facilitated by art therapists, "Rock to Recovery," psychologists, and other process groups. Snacks and soft drinks are available throughout the day. The group sessions are split by a lunch break, again prepared by the chef. Occasionally, you are scheduled for a massage, reiki, a session with you psychologist, or other therapeutic sessions throughout the week. I always looked forward to the 60-minute massage every week. There are generally AA/NA meetings available to attend, offsite. Drivers take you there and are also there as sober support while away from the facility. The chef also prepares dinner every evening. That day's left overs are available in the client refrigerator if you get hungry later or miss a meal because you were out. Staff takes the clients to the movies once a week. There aren't theaters in a Malibu, so this usually involves a 30-60 minute drive to Thousand Oakes. They also cover the cost of up to three items from the concession stand! Over all, Cliffside offers an excellent inpatient experience. This was my first rehab facility, and I have yet to find one that compares. Individual results, obviously, will vary. I relapsed, so I've been to a few other facilities. When you go to Cliffside, please try to relax and completely focus on your recovery. It's a great place to do so, as you don't have to do chores, and all your needs are met here. Best of luck in your recovery!

Ask the Community - Cliffside Malibu

I'd like to go here but I'm conflicted, is it just for upscale people, I honestly need alot of therapy, I've been to two rehabs before and I need to really just work on me and not aa or constant groups about education on alcohol?

Go to creative care. I found Cliffside Malibu to be inflexible with a complete misunderstanding about what a rehab center should focus on. In my opinion they are all about the money. Creative Care really does care. You won't be forced to do…

The team there is unparalleled. I wish I could name everyone that were members of my treatment team at Rise, but a few shoutouts to Nam for driving my sad sack self to Rise, baking amazing bread, and being an amazing support from Day 1, Shari & Zach from nursing for the care, fun, pep talks, and compassion, Dr Mark for his wisdom and pragmatic approach that I really resonated with, and numerous others (the chefs are next-level good, Tessa, Luke, Saber, Destiny, Cesar, Cat, Michael, Terry, Adrian, etc). Outside of the fantastic staff, I'll add that the house is gorgeous, the groups are varied and enriching, there's a good balance between free time & groups, the rooms are comfortable and spacious, and they do a great job of ensuring that you have access to outside appointments - for example, I was able to go to Passover services while at Rise without having to go through a lot of hoops/bureaucracy. The amenities are fun and obviously appreciated, but the heart of this place is really why I would recommend it to a loved one or friend in a heartbeat. Thank you so much, Rise team!!!

There's a book I recommend for insight: Alcoholism and Addiction Cure. The book was written by the founders and lays the foundations of the program. You're treated like an adult--free to use your phone, stay in touch, and even order food if the meals don't suit you (though they're surprisingly decent). By far the nicest place I've been physically (and that's saying something). The property is massive with a ton of outdoor space, unfortunately mostly unused, but there nonetheless. It feels spacious and free, not at all like a confined space. - the breakfast, lunch, and dinner is great, varied, and delivered on time or early by an onsite chef. Downsides: - while staff was friendly, they seemed aloof. It was a very weird vibe. For nursing teams (eg to get scheduled meds), there was a weird iPad system you would have to use to check in. Only time I've seen anything like this in residential treatment - treatment was definitely more holistic than therapeutic. There was a lot of sound bath, acupuncture, massage, etc. I was in a few "groups" that ended up just being me. I don't think I got anything therapeutic from the program. My individual therapist seemed great but I benefit more from group therapy which I just didn't receive here at all. - I was in a house literally by myself which felt really isolating and honestly bizarre - the rules and structure of the program are nebulous. It runs on a levels system (ie higher level = more permissions) which works in theory but in practice was muddled and very difficult to understand. Like I mentioned, it's not my first rodeo in Malibu. If you're looking for a strong therapeutic experience in conjunction with amenities, I HIGHLY recommend Rise (or Carrara if you can afford it but it's $$$).

After 23 years of abusing alcohol and not dealing with my depression, I decided to check myself in to Alo. From the initial phone consultation I knew I had made the right decision. They had a driver named Mike who met me at the airport and helped ease my mind and answered my many questions on the drive to Malibu. Once I got to the Alo detox house over looking the Pacific Ocean, I was put at ease by the friendly staff and councillors, ( many of whom had some experience with recovery themselves). This was an extremely emotional time for me as I realized I would be getting to the core of my problems with Alcohol and depression over the following month, but not once did I feel it unsafe to discuss any and all topics with the amazing staff, therapists and psychologists. At the next phase my lodging was in a giant mansion with all the amenities including a pool and 24 hour staff on call to help with any issues. There was an absolute dream team of chefs who made all types of delicious meals to suite any and all dietary restrictions. Can't say enough good things about how well I was fed throughout my stay. The daily programming covered a wide variety of courses and the group discussions were where I found some of the most comfort and solidified some great friendships with other clients. Jared and Evan have created an amazing thing down there in Malibu and I hope they are aware of the impact they've had on many lives, including mine. All I can say is thank you, from the bottom of my heart to all the staff, councillors, and therapists at Alo House. This place is nothing more than a trap house staffed by individuals that look like they're still in their active meth addiction. Either that or they don't offer their staff dental health benefits because half of them are missing teeth, and look like they just arrived from the nearest homeless shelter. It's dingy, the common areas are carpeted, it's dark, and filthy. Their idea of a 'luxury' private room with king size bed was adjoining two queen size beds together. And they couldn't even do that properly as there was nothing keeping them attached. Therefore you can fall right down the middle. Pathetic. One staff member not only used expletives like a pirate but also managed to call me a Masshole (cause I'm from Massachusetts), only to then give me tips on how to tell good meth from bad meth! Having driven 6 hours to this dump I thought it best to spend the night since it was already dark outside. But first thing in the morning bright and early I was out of there. Though they didn't make it easy. They begged me to please stay even offering to walk my dogs (I brought with me) on my behalf and even take them to the dog park multiple times a day. There I was thinking to myself, 'I don't trust you with MY well-being much less my dogs well-being'! And so I left and hightailed it back to my home. I didn't think a place like this could exist in Malibu, but what this taught me is that even in Malibu one has to do their due diligence in researching a facility. I have since then heard from other individuals that this is a 'body broker' type of place. If you don't know what a 'body broker' is, Google it. Essentially it's when they pay (in one form or another) for someone to get high/use so they can bring them in and charge their health insurance. Alternatively it can also manifest as specifically seeking those in active addiction (regardless of their wanting to get sober or not) and paying/convincing them (one way or another) to come in; and as you may have already guessed: charge their health insurance. It is because of places like Oceanside Malibu that the recovery industry needs to be much more stringently regulated. A place like this dump should not be legally allowed to exist.
