I stayed at Avalon for over a month because I genuinely wanted to rebuild my life and believed I would leave with a much stronger foundation for my recovery and understanding of my own mental health. While the facility itself is beautiful and the accommodations are luxurious, luxury should not be confused with effective treatment. Reaching out for help was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Instead of leaving feeling empowered and equipped with the knowledge and practical tools I needed, I left frustrated and disappointed with the mental health care system. I don't feel I received the solid educational foundation or long-term coping strategies I was hoping for. They forced their views on to me. I felt trapped. I did not have a wonderful experience and if I ever have to do the rehab circuit again I will definitely be using places that are covered by my insurance. While there were staff members who genuinely cared and tried to help, my overall experience did not meet the expectations I had for such a highly regarded place. I sincerely hope Avalon continues to improve by listening to former clients and placing greater emphasis on respect, boundaries, practical life skills, individualized education, and preparing people for the realities they'll face after discharge. Beautiful surroundings alone cannot replace the knowledge, compassion, and lasting support that people in recovery truly need. I don't think most people understand how hard it is to ask for help. I only write this review so the next person can understand that Avalon is not for everyone. I brought most of my belongings with me only to have 98% of them taken from me upon arrival. Do your research before you spend tons of money on any program that doesn't improve your actual life and give you your own voice back. Avalon Malibu helped me rehabilitate and get back on track as far as my mental health journey goes. Avalon has developed a system that works pretty well for their clients. Care can be personalized. Many of the groups are foundational to success. I had a two month stay. I was challenged by surf lessons and I persisted in the instruction. There is plenty of Therapy and meetings. The outings and beach walks were perhaps my favorite activities. Very few people actually want to be in a treatment center but as far as they go, Avalon does pretty well for itself. Patient care was excellent, almost all of the staff were very impressive. It is a gorgeous facility. My only complaint was that I left after 25 days of being there and I was considered leaving against clinical advice. I was the 1 and only patient there for close to 2 weeks. The other house for mental health (there's 2 houses one strictly for mental health issues, and the "detox and rehab house), the rehab house focuses on both mental health and abstinence). My therapist and the staff were great. Sending me home signing out after all of my time and participation there with an against clinical advice for not having stayed another 4 nights was ridiculous. I gave them a weeks notice before I left the facility so I could return to work where I am right this second writing this review. I find that saying I haven't completed their program is a bit ridiculous. I did not have groups, all groups for 2 of the weeks I was there were all one on ones with whatever staff member would be running that group. I did everything asked of me, and I find sending someone out who was just about finished with their program not receiving a completed program is a set-up for failure. And it all comes down to finances of course. Yes I'm sure my insurance would have paid for a longer stay and their program is 30 up to 90 days if insurance pays or if one can afford that, unlike most which are 28 days. The program overall was good. I personally did not like the "Breath Works" group. All of the others were great. My therapist was good. The neuro feedback they offer had the most wonderful woman who did that and I found it helpful. I'm still sober since leaving the program, and plan on continuing with my sobriety. All in all it's a good place. I do know of 2 others personally that I would go to in Malibu that are "luxury rehabs" I found better than Avalon. Which I won't name on here, because I do not want anyone thinking I'm advertising elsewhere. Sadly Avalon being empty as far as patients go, and not receiving a completion of their program has me a little frustrated with their program as a whole. read more

My brother benefited significantly from a one-month stay. He has serious anxiety and depression. He felt safe and slept well there for the last entirety of his stay Sadly, he opted not to stay on a bit longer, which is what the staff had recommended. Predictably he jags had some setbacks. WITHHELD MY MEDICATION UPON DISCHARGE They kept pushing me to stay longer, and my time was extended one week at a time. After 2 months, I decided it was enough so I left on a Sunday. Since I was "supposed" to stay until Wednesday, THEY ONLY GAVE ME 3 DAYS WORTH OF MEDS. They told me if I left on Wednesday I'd get all my meds. It seems they were pushing me to stay longer for the money. They were billing my insurance $8,000 a day, and in total made $575,000 from me. Of course they wanted me to stay 3 extra days!! That's 24,000 extra, on top of how long they had already convinced me to stay. I had to scramble to get my meds refilled which was awful. I had to go to an urgent care and wait for hours, then drive far to a 24 hour CVS. To make this even worse.... I had to pay out of pocket for the refill, because Avalon billed my insurance to refill my medication recently, so I couldn't get another one so soon. It was expensive and I'm pissed. As a case manager in the Los Angeles area, Avalon is probably my top choice for residential treatment. They are accredited in both mental health and substance use making it a fantastic option for individuals suffering from co-occurring disorders. By the time I got to Avalon I was completely hopeless. I was suffering from major depression and had been self-isolating for more than a year, alone in my despair. The therapists and doctors are very caring, and they offer unique treatments that really help. The owners are grandiose, and if I don't as rating based on them alone I would give 0 stars. Aaron and Hilarie aren't interested in helping people, and only serve to waste people's time. They will pull you aside from a group where you're learning about yourself, and how to cope every single week for no reason at all. They don't actually care about your feedback, and simply want to act like this is serving a purpose. Me and some other women at the program had a male staff walk in on us multiple times when he knew we were changing. He brushed off my concern. Later we were told it was being handled by Aaron, and we'd get updated. He never updated us, and the staff member seemingly received no disciplinary action. I had to leave, when I wasn't ready, because of the owners. They provided no aftercare help, or transitional service. They instead gave me a bag full pill, in a suicidal state and I ended up in the cardiac care unit from overdose. Aaron ignored me when I was trying to reach out for help with the suicidality. He dismissed me, or spoke down to me. read more

I would like to rewrite my review with a little more balance. I come from a traumatized childhood. A lot of physical, and emotional abuse. I don't know if I know what the word trust even means. There was issues with a medicine I took. I would go from feeling numb on it, and honestly feel feeling a little stoned to having every negative feeling flood back into me. Including the suicidality. This can be a pattern, suicidality only goes away when numb/ apathetic from meds. Even them it doesn't go away. It's just I'm apathetic, so I can push it to the side. Only the they thought the meds were making me like that. Honestly, either way that's not sustainable. Part of me knew this. However, it's hard to appreciate when you're flooded with all of your angers, and fear, and floridly suicidal. Especially, when you're more on edge. Then you feel you're being judged. You probably are being judged. Which makes you more on edge, and people respond to you worse. So, then the cycle continues. Though a slower taper probably would've been better, in hindsight. With the suicidality increased. That's when I wanted to get specific help with the suicide addiction. I was thinking it was hopeless. I knew if I left suicide was inevitable. Though I thought it already was. I got on with most of the clients, but not the newest one. I was having trouble with some of the staff. Feeling covert hostility, judgment, and passive aggressiveness, and disrespect coming from them. I thought it was it was only a matter of time before, new clients came in who I didn't get on with. Definitely overall the therapists, and the clients tended to be more effective in communicating with me in a way that I didn't feel threatened by. However, that last time I thought it was it. I wanted to distract myself with a cigarette. Only I didn't have any. Couldn't get more. Just one more thing to add to the perfect storm. I did think it could possibly blow over. Only I didn't know that. I'm not very good at not knowing. Especially in that hyper vigilant state. I was also just trying to guess how I would think without the medicine rebound effect. It's kind not tangible. I can't just temporarily remove my brain from that state. That was my reality. Sure, I can imagine others. It's hard to appreciate fully. Though, the therapist Karla seemed like a great fit at first. She wasn't the best fit for me. I did benefit from some of the techniques she taught me like tapping, and she seemed empathetic. Though what happened at the end leaves me questioning that. Our talks weren't the most helpful. It didn't feel like she really got me, and seemed to not be able to think critically of certain people. Though, maybe she can't with anyone, which is why she cut me off, when she said she'd stay in touch. Seems a bit two faced. She didn't really help me with my problems beyond techniques. Although, the stuff that almost made me stay was things therapist Jen said. She was much more helpful in much of what she said. Like things fading, and how we could become the creator instead of the victim. However, very hard to appreciate in that hyper vigilant, terrified, and hopeless place. Though I'm sure I wasn't the best to be around, I still don't think I deserved how I was treated. I was trying to clear my head, to call it off. I felt a bit trapped. So, I really wanted to see how I felt if I was to go. However, Karla kept talking to me. Granted it seemed at the time she was trying to be helpful. I was overwhelmed, and couldn't think, or communicate well. I tried to tell her nicely I needed space. Then this really aggressive guy named John came in, with one other person. Outnumbering me. He was trying to provoke, and intimidate me. So, I tried to get away, and they kept following, and trying to provoke me. They sent me back with my mom who they knew I had an abusive past with, with a bag full of meds. That's a lot, and I could say more, but I think it's already very long. read more

It took two months to stabilize me after a breakdown precipitated by a misdiagnosis of ADHD and over-medication with stimulants. They helped me to secure a correct mental health diagnosis of bipolar disorder 2 (a severe and I'm told unusual case) and they developed a treatment plan for me that is the foundation of my continuing therapy and healing. I have seen them work their magic and do the same for so many of the clients with whom I shared my time. Nothing can compare to the standards at Avalon. The variety of therapeutic modalities, from the most traditional all the way up to the most cutting-edge treatments currently available, is best in class. During treatment, we learn to understand ourselves as human beings with shared experiences, as well as underlying roots of our traumas and addictions. The depth and intensity of the program is unparalleled. Just a small part of what is offered: 1. Four group therapy sessions per day. 2. Three individual sessions with a primary therapist three times per week. 3. Access to EDMR, breathwork, neurofeedback, and other breakthrough treatments. All this is provided in a luxury beachfront setting with clients' needs at the forefront. As Avalon alumni, we are part of a lifelong community, a family of people with deep connections who have experienced change and growth that was unimaginable to them before. I very much hope that they bring back their intensive outpatient program someday soon, because there is nothing like the Avalon experience. A family member attempted suicide, and our physician recommended Avalon. Although priced far north of $80k per month, it held the promise of saving a life. Think of it as a beach-side luxury adult day care with access to excellent private practice doctors. Those doctors helped him to feel safe with his feelings, and for this I am appreciative, but that had nothing to do with Avalon. During the sales tour, Avalon stressed the importance of involving the family and his husband to coordinate a healthier post-treatment life, but that was never provided. He then learned that his admissions contract (signed while mentally distressed) forbid him from continuing care with his private practice doctors during after-care. And Avalon refused to assist in planning his after-care unless we paid for more months. I would have preferred a "care" over "contract" approach. So long as you remain within their controlled fantasy world, you may have everything that you need. But there is no preparation for the real world, which is why so many patients must return again and again. I think that this facility may be tailored towards substance abuse treatment. read more

Avalon gave me my life back. I came here with my life in a complete spiral. I was making serious suicide plans when I arrived. I am leaving, 60 days later, feeling more clear-headed, confident, and capable of handling life than I ever have. I was assigned a therapist who truly understood and cared for me, and my psychiatrist was nothing short of brilliant. I had been misdiagnosed for nearly 10 years, and that was corrected - I was finally put on a medication regiment that worked for me. Before I arrived at Avalon I had hit rock bottom regarding my mental health. I was a freshmen in college in Philly and I was a raging alcoholic, stoner, pill popper. I was unaware at the time but I had Bi-Polar disorder which Dr.Shapiro diagnosed me with when I came to Avalon. Avalon really gave me a new lease on life. I was properly medicated for my Bi-Polar disorder and had very insightful therapy sessions with Aron. Ronnie was always there to have a laugh with and I felt comfortable talking to him about my hobbies. The food at this place is INSANE and this is coming from someone who would vacation in Italy and have their lunches flown in from Paris. Momo who is the chef made me a special bacon egg and cheese every morning that reminded me of NYC. This place is the most beautiful facility ever! When I got there it seemed that they were not using the hot tub very much and said they needed three hours in advance to heat it. So I made the very reasonable request of asking them to heat it every day for me regardless if I went in or not and they did it! I love the beach and Avalon overlooks the ocean and we went on therapeutic beach walks every day. For anyone who is having trouble in life whether it be mental health or addiction then this is the place to go. It is easily top 3 Rehabilitation centers in the country and it is the perfect place to go to in order to achieve freedom! read more

He did not get the promised treatment and was left in a vulnerable and dangerous situation. They had no problem taking a big chunk of our money and then collected insurance money on top of this. Before coming to Avalon my life was entirely up in the air. I had lost control, I was severely depressed and traumatized, and I was wanting to give up. As a young 20 year old male who had grown up in an abusive addict home, I had developed a severe eating disorder to cope with the stress. I had gone to "The Ranch" in Tennessee, Rosewood (all 3 levels) in Arizona and Santa Monica, and only had really been able to ground down and process much of my trauma at Avalon. This had mainly been due for the resonance I felt at Avalon in regards to their body, mind, spirit philosophy that allows the recovery process to become a lifestyle that enables myself (the individual) an effortless way of living in ease, self compassion, and liberation. The ability to recognize triggers, necessary support systems, coping mechanisms, family systems, faulty belief systems, and most importantly developing a way for you to realistically heal yourself on an continuous basis for when you leave Avalon (for everyone in recovery field already knows that this process doesn't just end after 30 or 90 days, but then becomes a life long journey). I have met the most passionate down to earth therapists, who are on the frontier of their field. Staff members who were not only in recovery themselves, but who all had shared a selfless agenda in compassion and priority for each patient (including working off the clock to pick up people from the airport, organizing fun alumni meetings, and especially contributing to an environment that promotes safety, love, and healing). Most importantly (and I say this as a male with an eating disorder) an incredible chef who puts out such love and energy into her own cooking that I downright believe that Chef Carolyn Fitzpatrick is a master of not only presence but also of one of unconditional love. Dr. Matthew Torrington has also been an influential person in my life who had introduced me to a treatment that had essential restored the functions of my brain and in essence provided me the "breaks" for the many situations when the flight or fight system activates. Mark Schwartz, Lori Galperin, Noah Levine, Lynn Tumpa, Dr. Sagan, Kim Lauer, and Justin Leitstein (as well as many others) were also ones who were game changers in my process of cultivating the ability for self-awareness, self-compassion, and honesty (with myself) where I have reached a point in my life where I never imagined I could be. A life where I am able to love myself unconditionally, be present with myself and others (who I so dearly care about), and also a life where I can connect to a deeper level of myself and not only acknowledge that inside of me, but live as one as my authentic self (that I had been hiding for many years). I cannot begin to explain the many diverse opportunities that Avalon exposes to each of its clients from the spiritual center of Agape, Equine Therapy, Ropes Course, Aqua Therapy, and even fun outings such as comedy clubs, but one thing for certain.... thank you Jeff Schwartz for creating a place of healing that allows individuals to feel safe to let go, break down, restore, and go out as human beings who are more aligned with that beautiful part inside all of us where true beauty and light resides. read more

It's a dual-diagnosis addiction treatment center specializing in treating a wide variety of addictions. After 8 years of struggling with Alcoholism and a sever eating disorder, I am now almost 7 months sober and free from the prison of disordered eating that ruled my life....and I owe it ALL to Avalon. Jeff Schwartz, the owner, is by far the most compassionate and loving human being I've ever met. He has dedicated his life to helping those who've fallen victim to the tragic and damaging cycle of addiction. I checked into Avalon last July after finally surrending to the fact that I needed help. The moment I checked in here the focus was immediately on me and creating an individual treatment program that was purely customized to my own successful recovery. Whenever I needed a shoulder to cry on or someone to cheer me up, she was there making me laugh until my stomach hurt or sharing stories of her struggles and inspiring journey of recovery. I love her with all my heart. She ALWAYS took care of me. Even to this day she continues to check up on me and tell me about new AA meetings in my area that I should check out. She is the real deal and I truly believe I was meant to meet her and have her in my life. Make sure you take advantage of her presence while you're there, you won't be sorry. I owe Avalon my new and amazing life. I'm finally free of the miserable chains of addiction and could never have imagined the happiness I feel when I wake up everyday. The clinical, administrative, and residential staff are exemplary, caring professionals who are passionate about providing support, empathy, and love. I would not recommend Avalon. I was cold turkey taken off Klonopin and put on another addictive drug , gabapanten. I should have been told not to come to Avalon and to go home and taper off this drug over the course of a year. That is the sensible thing to do. It was suggested that I stay two months but I was never told that it would be dangerous to go off Klonopin in one month. Even two mo would not have been enough time. It has been 2.5 years and I am still suffering from gabapanten wd. This drug is now becoming another controlled substance. If you want to stay on addictive drugs your whole life go here. But I went in order to get off of drugs. I was put on K for sleep and that was also irresbonsible. I have never had any mental health problems before this and not any addiction problems. I suggest you go home and find a responsible doctor to help you. Look at the Ashton Manuel. Wish I had done that. This place has ruined my life! read more

My adopted daughter who suffers from ptsd and abandonment issues was thrown on the street. Told never to come back. But they kept my $$. This will, perhaps, be a somewhat lengthy review but it will be thorough. I went to Avalon not caring whether I lived or died in a severely domestic violent marriage, drinking to numb the pain and on 16 years of benzodiazepine dependency from PTSD. After 6 attempts at various Malibu treatment centers I was not able to find a facility that could tapper me correctly. From Top (the clinical Director - to bottom - the RA staff) I was cared for with the utmost sincerity and compassion. Each individual demonstrated not just their vocation, but their AVOCATION and life's purpose. After 16 years of a benzo dependencey, and on and off drinking, I was tapered correctly and MOST importantly the underlying cause of PTSD was addressed. I found the ability to trust again, feel validated, and safe for the first time in years. I am now free from alcohol and benzos and have my life back; a life better than I could have ever imagined. Aaron, the Clinical Director helped me with legal issues of domestic violence and every staff member sought to keep me safe. I now have a life I look forward to living! I love each one of you dearly. This facility is better than any facility I tried in Malibu.They are highly professional and knowledgeable. They will not let you fail! read more

Avalon was a huge game changer...truly changed my son's life. He was treated for dual diagnosis in April of 2020. Spent 30 days on site and then went to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Avalon has an amazing program that treats BOTH addiction and mental illness. All the clinicians were top notch but we are especially thankful for Roxan, his therapist and for his psychiatrist, Dr. Shapiro. He's been clean for 6 months and continues to use the tools he learned at Avalon...our life is so much better because of this organization...and we are so grateful. read more

Avalon is a very special place. They truly care about you and want you to heal both physically and mentally. The therapists are top-notch. The food is healthy and fresh. The location cannot be beat. I entered Avalon 82 days ago severely depressed, addicted to drugs and alcohol and completely broken and hopeless. The staff welcomed me with open arms and has truly saved my life.The accommodations, food, amenities, views...all were amazing and I immediately felt comfortable with the all the staff from the directors, the chef, the RA's, drivers, you name it...everyone that works here is so caring and fabulous. When you come in you are immediately assigned a practitioner and a psychiatrist...I was a late admission but neither of these doctors had me wait till morning and they both were on the phone with me till the wee hours of the night/early morning easing my withdrawal fears and answering every single question I had to make sure I was absolutely comfortable with medications and all that I may need until they could see me in person the next day. The counselors and therapists who run the daily groups are by far the most intuitive, knowledgeable and caring clinical staff members I have experienced in a residential setting (and I have been in a few rehabs before this). Both my individual therapist and my family therapist have helped me beyond words. I came to Avalon with many, many issues...sexual assault and trauma from the past, binge eating disorder, bipolar depression, anxiety disorder and alcohol and drug addiction. Avalon has been able to help me treat all of these and get down to the real core issue underneath so much of the pain that I have experienced for decades. I am still here at Avalon, I will get 90 days sober next week and plan to extend beyond that as I know I still have work I need to do. I can honestly say that Avalon was the best decision I have made in many years, I came here wanting to get better but not knowing how or even where to start and they have given me all that and more. I am so grateful to be able to create such a beautiful, sound and healthy foundation here and I encourage anyone considering Avalon to come take a tour, meet the staff and if you truly want to heal and do the work to have a better life.....this place works!!! read more
