There's a book I recommend for insight: Alcoholism and Addiction Cure. The book was written by the founders and lays the foundations of the program. You're treated like an adult--free to use your phone, stay in touch, and even order food if the meals don't suit you (though they're surprisingly decent). By far the nicest place I've been physically (and that's saying something). The property is massive with a ton of outdoor space, unfortunately mostly unused, but there nonetheless. It feels spacious and free, not at all like a confined space. - the breakfast, lunch, and dinner is great, varied, and delivered on time or early by an onsite chef. Downsides: - while staff was friendly, they seemed aloof. It was a very weird vibe. For nursing teams (eg to get scheduled meds), there was a weird iPad system you would have to use to check in. Only time I've seen anything like this in residential treatment - treatment was definitely more holistic than therapeutic. There was a lot of sound bath, acupuncture, massage, etc. I was in a few "groups" that ended up just being me. I don't think I got anything therapeutic from the program. My individual therapist seemed great but I benefit more from group therapy which I just didn't receive here at all. - I was in a house literally by myself which felt really isolating and honestly bizarre - the rules and structure of the program are nebulous. It runs on a levels system (ie higher level = more permissions) which works in theory but in practice was muddled and very difficult to understand. Like I mentioned, it's not my first rodeo in Malibu. If you're looking for a strong therapeutic experience in conjunction with amenities, I HIGHLY recommend Rise (or Carrara if you can afford it but it's $$$).

After 23 years of abusing alcohol and not dealing with my depression, I decided to check myself in to Alo. From the initial phone consultation I knew I had made the right decision. They had a driver named Mike who met me at the airport and helped ease my mind and answered my many questions on the drive to Malibu. Once I got to the Alo detox house over looking the Pacific Ocean, I was put at ease by the friendly staff and councillors, ( many of whom had some experience with recovery themselves). This was an extremely emotional time for me as I realized I would be getting to the core of my problems with Alcohol and depression over the following month, but not once did I feel it unsafe to discuss any and all topics with the amazing staff, therapists and psychologists. At the next phase my lodging was in a giant mansion with all the amenities including a pool and 24 hour staff on call to help with any issues. There was an absolute dream team of chefs who made all types of delicious meals to suite any and all dietary restrictions. Can't say enough good things about how well I was fed throughout my stay. The daily programming covered a wide variety of courses and the group discussions were where I found some of the most comfort and solidified some great friendships with other clients. Jared and Evan have created an amazing thing down there in Malibu and I hope they are aware of the impact they've had on many lives, including mine. All I can say is thank you, from the bottom of my heart to all the staff, councillors, and therapists at Alo House. I just received my 3 month chip ( the longest duration of sobriety I've had in 23 years) and Im slowly getting my life back in order. We went on one of the many trails around here, and it was absolutely stunning! The views on this…read moretrail are breathtaking--definitely worth the effort. It's a loop hike, and we preferred doing it clockwise. This way, the climb felt more gradual at first and gave us those rewarding canyon-top views with the canyon on one side and the ocean on the other. There's also a little waterfall and a lively stream running through the trail (we went in July, and the water was still flowing nicely). Be prepared--the ascent can be quite steep in parts, but the payoff at the top makes it all worth it. Facilities are only available at the trailhead, so plan accordingly. Dogs are allowed, but they should be kept on a leash. Parking is a bit tricky. The lot only seems to hold about 30 ish cars. I would say on the moderate / hard side.

And just the opposite is true, too. I purposely cut off of PCH and head up into this canyon leaving the water views and the open sky to feel the exhilaration of driving through this curvy passage up through this canyon and eventually hitting Lost Hills onto the 101 Freeway. I freaking love it! If you go through here, get out of your car and into any one of the many turnouts available for people like me who just want to take it all in and enjoy the magnitude of the mountain that was cut through to be able to get to the other side. You will either to reach the San Fernando Valley going back south or go down into the Conejo Valley heading north. It's still a breathtaking, awe-inspiring ride through Malibu Canyon to me.
