Outside of the fantastic staff, I'll add that the house is gorgeous, the groups are varied and enriching, there's a good balance between free time & groups, the rooms are comfortable and spacious, and they do a great job of ensuring that you have access to outside appointments - for example, I was able to go to Passover services while at Rise without having to go through a lot of hoops/bureaucracy. By far the nicest place I've been physically (and that's saying something). The property is massive with a ton of outdoor space, unfortunately mostly unused, but there nonetheless. It feels spacious and free, not at all like a confined space. - the breakfast, lunch, and dinner is great, varied, and delivered on time or early by an onsite chef. Downsides: - while staff was friendly, they seemed aloof. It was a very weird vibe. For nursing teams (eg to get scheduled meds), there was a weird iPad system you would have to use to check in. Only time I've seen anything like this in residential treatment - treatment was definitely more holistic than therapeutic. There was a lot of sound bath, acupuncture, massage, etc. I was in a few "groups" that ended up just being me. I don't think I got anything therapeutic from the program. My individual therapist seemed great but I benefit more from group therapy which I just didn't receive here at all. - I was in a house literally by myself which felt really isolating and honestly bizarre - the rules and structure of the program are nebulous. It runs on a levels system (ie higher level = more permissions) which works in theory but in practice was muddled and very difficult to understand. Like I mentioned, it's not my first rodeo in Malibu. If you're looking for a strong therapeutic experience in conjunction with amenities, I HIGHLY recommend Rise (or Carrara if you can afford it but it's $$$).

But the nurses at the actual facilities where they keep the children- hardly answer the phone AT ALL and they did not give my child the medication she needed. My child was attacked by another child and then they called me the next day- and told me that my child is too mentally ill to be at their facility. Zero accountability. Totally unprofessional. Totally unethical. To me it feels fully motivated by CAPITOL. In my opinion this place is an absolute disgrace.

She didn't start my son on the starting dose of Prozac and he got very sick from it. There is a major drug interaction between Cymbalta and Prozac. Our primary doctor and pharmacist were shocked when they heard that she prescribed these two medication together and recommended against taking them together. Since Dr. Thomas came highly recommended, my son did as he was told. Today he saw a psychiatrist and she was shocked that he was on these two medications and immediately told him that there are life threatening side effects. He is stopping the Prozac immediately. If you care about your life, don't go to this doctor. She is a strange one on top of all of this. She seems very medicated herself.

It's dingy, the common areas are carpeted, it's dark, and filthy. Their idea of a 'luxury' private room with king size bed was adjoining two queen size beds together. And they couldn't even do that properly as there was nothing keeping them attached. Therefore you can fall right down the middle. Pathetic. One staff member not only used expletives like a pirate but also managed to call me a Masshole (cause I'm from Massachusetts), only to then give me tips on how to tell good meth from bad meth! Having driven 6 hours to this dump I thought it best to spend the night since it was already dark outside. But first thing in the morning bright and early I was out of there. Though they didn't make it easy. They begged me to please stay even offering to walk my dogs (I brought with me) on my behalf and even take them to the dog park multiple times a day. There I was thinking to myself, 'I don't trust you with MY well-being much less my dogs well-being'! And so I left and hightailed it back to my home. I didn't think a place like this could exist in Malibu, but what this taught me is that even in Malibu one has to do their due diligence in researching a facility. I have since then heard from other individuals that this is a 'body broker' type of place. If you don't know what a 'body broker' is, Google it. Essentially it's when they pay (in one form or another) for someone to get high/use so they can bring them in and charge their health insurance. Alternatively it can also manifest as specifically seeking those in active addiction (regardless of their wanting to get sober or not) and paying/convincing them (one way or another) to come in; and as you may have already guessed: charge their health insurance. It is because of places like Oceanside Malibu that the recovery industry needs to be much more stringently regulated. A place like this dump should not be legally allowed to exist.
