Cliff's is a straight neighborhood greasy spoon. Friendly face, friendly place. Food is good. I have a lot to try there yet. See you soon.

We went on a Thursday night around 5. Plenty of space, there were only 2 other families there…read more Food 3/5: the ribs and brisket were dry and did not have much flavor. We got the end of the brisket they were currently cutting, so likely had been cut hours before and left which likely lead it to be dry. The chicken was ok, not much flavor and was on the drier side. The sausage was the best option we tried, good balance of flavor. The cornbread was also dry. The potato salad had good flavor. The Mac and cheese was the best thing we tried. I'd comeback for the sausage and Mac and cheese. Service 3/5: this is an order at the counter and sit down style. We had never been here before and overall did not feel helped when we were ordering. The staff just started at us and asked what we wanted instead of helping us walk through the steps of how to order (meat first and then you choose your sides). It got challenging because there was a growing line and many of us felt the same way of not really knowing what to order. I had to ask for extra plates for our kiddos, and was a little confused about extra condiments and things that were available in the restaurant. Ambiance 4/5: the restaurant was clean and plenty of places to sit. We were in the restaurant with another family with kids, and our kiddos ended up doing friendly dinosaur roads to the family across the restaurant. We all had a really good laugh. Overall most of the meat was dry but we liked some of the sides. The staff could have been more helpful in ordering. This is a kid friendly restaurant in our experience and had plenty of room to accommodate larger parties.

Solid BBQ resturaunt and they also sell frozen cuts of meat…read more Got beef brisket, collards, mac and cheese and sweet corn bread. You can tell how good a place is by their collard greens and theirs can hold their own. Big chunks of pork and the right amount of heat. They were a little more sweeter then I like, but that's more to my personal taste. Sweet ice tea was on point. Cornbread tasted homemade and brisket was tender, flavorful and had the pink smoke ring. The BBQ is sweet and spicy ( not to my taste, but if you like a kick- you will enjoy it.) The only negative and thus 4 stars was the mac and cheese, it just had a weird aftertaste like a cheese sauce from a can. Service was quick and waitstaff were super nice. Prices were extremely reasonable.

Ordered pickup from here on a Friday night before the rush. We ended up getting there early enough…read morethat we decided to stay and eat there, as tables were open. Online ordering was very easy and the food was ready right on time! We got the smoked pork shoulder sandwich platter with coleslaw and corn bread bites and the spicy chicken breast sandwich platter with baked beans and Mac & Cheese. The buns they use for these sandwiches are a great texture and hold up well to the amount of meat and sauce that you want on a BBQ sandwich. It never felt soggy, which is rare around the area. The pork was flavorful with a very fine shred. I wouldn't say the chicken was spicy as said on the menu, but more peppered. The real star is the bbq sauce because it comes out warm and is thin enough to pour but has enough texture to stick to the meat. Went well with everything from the meats, to the Mac & Cheese, to the corn bread bites. The corn bread bites were the stand out side, kind of like a hush puppy. Would recommend at least one person in your group gets them. I even liked them topped with the baked beans. Overall, very tasty food and nice people working. After hearing so many great things about this place over the years, it's about time I got there. Lived up to all the hype!

First I should say I judge a barbecue joint by its ribs. That's it. I have had barbecue all over…read morethe country and smoke a mean rib myself. These ribs were as good as any I've had around the country, and better than most. Some places brag about "fall of the bone tender." To me that is overcooked. Ribs should be "fairly easily coaxed off the bone tender. The need a little bit of chew to them or the are too dry. Smokey Jon's ribs were just right. Now the rest. The barbecue beans were very good. I put a little brisket burnt ends in when I make them. That would have improved these to top notch. I usually shy away from barbecue joint mac and cheese but I ordered it here. Hey, I'm in Wisconsin. It's got to be at least ok. It was better than just ok. It had a generous amount of cheese and the symtickiness that good Mac and cheese must have. For my taste, it had too much garlic. I'm a big garlic fan. When I see a recipe that says "one clove of garlic," I figure it's a misprint and they meant "one head of garlic." Here, they used powdered garlic, and I feel like the amount they used covered up the natural sweetness of the cheese. The ambiance of the place was spot on. I am visiting Madison, from Oregon (Go Ducks!) Driving by the place it looks like they've got to have at least passible 'cue. Inside it was classic back woods barbecue chic. "Log cabin" looking interior walls, red and white checkered plastic table cloths, and great old school blues on the sound system. Is this place perfect? No, won't get that until you pass through the Pearly Gates. But it's about as good as your going to get anywhere else, unless you come over to my back yard on 4th of July.

We wound up at City Barbeque after finding out Dave's didn't have mozzarella sticks yet, cause it…read morewas conveniently located right next door :D. It looked pretty popular with a decent number of people dining in and a bunch of others picking up orders. The girl at the counter was super friendly and helpful because I had no idea how to order lol. She made a few recommendations and even helped adjust my random items into a combo for us. Prices are fair, ordered 3 meats and 2 sides for like ~$50. We got ribs, brisket, and pulled pork along with cornbread and mac and cheese, and it came with a fountain drink. Food came out pretty quickly, we didn't have to wait long. One thing I thought was fun was the bell by the door that you can ring if you had a good experience. We rang it on the way out and got a bunch of cheers from inside haha. The ribs were big, meaty, and cooked well. The brisket wasn't really my favorite, and the pulled pork was a little hit or miss since some bites were way saltier than others. We tried both the mild and spicy bbq sauces, and the spicy wasn't too spicy. Overall, a perfectly solid casual bbq spot.

Honestly, a solid BBQ option on the west side of Madison. I can tell I don't get out much anymore…read morewith how shocked I am by lunch prices. Not just here, but everywhere, really. I think my pulled pork sandwich, two sides (cole slaw and fries) and a drink pushed $17. That's more than I prefer to spend on lunch, but I was going out with some work friends and felt like treating myself. And it was, indeed, a treat! The pulled pork was very good - not overly fatty or anything. Good flavor. I tried the "original" and "sweet city" sauces - both were very good and not overpowering. The fries were good - a little greasy (but "good greasy" if there is such a thing). The creamy cole slaw confused me. It was a bit dry. I know, right? How is creamy cole slaw dry? I'm not sure if it's always like this, or maybe it was off the top of the batch and the "creamy" and dripped to lower parts. Don't get me wrong - it tasted good. We'll see how it is next time I'm there! Overall, a good BBQ stop. The pulled pork sandwich will be a standard order there, but I'm sure I'll venture out to some other dishes to see what they have to offer!
