Absolutely love living here. This is my second move and before coming here I saw mixed reviews and wasn't too much familiar with the area. A year and a few months later I can say this is just like home. It has a variety of different people from college students to family to business personnel. There's a gym, heat and hot water included, and my electric is very reasonable. There's a high school near by that gives you access to a track and there's a tennis court in the community. The layout is so cute and has higher ceilings. Location wise this place is perfect. The area is really good, you have a ton of different restaurants near by, a bus system right on Farmington Ave, you're literally in perfect radius of taking an Uber to the center or downtown Hartford. I totally recommend you moving here it's worth it! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. MICE, MICE and MORE MICE. No matter how clean you keep your place, they have a SERIOUS RODENT PROBLEM and they refuse to address it. Many of my neighbors told me they had a problem with MICE as well, it wasn't just my unit. The staff are extremely rude. They will argue with you, yell at you, interrupt you, and ignore your service requests. Clemens Place wasn't going to give me back my security deposit until I called up one of these awful women and read her the riot act. I had caused no damage whatsoever, and still had to do this just to get my security deposit back. The security deposit check was post-marked the very next day after I called - meaning these people are criminals and thieves who will steal your money unless you threaten them. The staff will also ask you to "give a good review" - openly soliciting 5-star reviews on sites like this one. Be suspicious of anyone doing this - they are likely either Clemens Place staff, or a resident they managed to con into writing a good review. TL:DR - these people are rude scumbags and criminal thieves. In a just world, they'd be in prison. Stay away from any Clemens Place property, and if you're currently living in one, GET OUT NOW. read more

Back in the late 80's & 90's this was a great community but no longer. The residential manager is rude and has an attitude. She told the maintenance worker that I had an attitude. Who wouldn't have an attitude after seeing a rat & mouse in their apartment after only living here a week. They advertising free. heat & hot water but after a year they want to charge and go up on the rent. They are not providing heat during the summer months but want you to pay. The place has a huge pest infestation issue. There are so many mice in my apartment eating away at floor boards carpet and other things. They say they will exterminate but then NEVER even show up. Management is BEYOND horrible they purposely ignore you and try to act clueless when reporting to them. I've been having allergic reactions due to the mice and when reported they did nothing. Dreadful. Of course they lure you in when you have two weeks to find an apartment. Of course they show you a much nicer version of the studio you'd actually be getting on the other, seedier, side of the complex. So, in short: Pro - a roof over your head and steps from The Half Door (if you're on the Sisson side as I was) Con - everything else. The longer story: I moved into Clemens Place over a year ago. Within a week, the dishwasher broke and flooded everywhere on my first attempt to use it. After a series of frustrated calls and maintenance form submissions on their website (which are somehow never received), maintenance finally fixed it six days later. Fine. Annoying, half-assed, but didn't put me in peril. Within a month, my car had gotten vandalized while I was in CA on a work trip (luckily nothing terribly major, some genius just broke off both windshield wipers at the base). When I inquired to Clemens Place security, they admitted that they didn't have any kind of security cameras in the lots. But wait! They have several signs around the complex that cryptically announce: WARNING! GUARD DOG! Surely that'll suffice. There's no guard dog. There aren't even security monitors. I doubt there's an unleashed canine policing the place. Although that'd be an improvement to the occasional security officer sleepily peddling his bicycle around in the middle of the afternoon. My kitchen window overlooked the large back parking lot and I hate to recall how many times I've seen car windows smashed. Once, all three cars next to mine but luckily mine was left untouched. In my old building on Frederick Street, the number of "solicitors" let in on a daily basis to bang on your unit door was just, frankly, unsettling. While I never opened my door (I work from home), their aggressive persistance in taking 10 minutes to knock was SO maddening. Shortly after moving in, the West End Civic Association released a notice about instances of faux solicitors robbing residents in the West End. So that's fun. Really makes ya feel safe. The icing on the cake: a small studio apartment costs $800. Don't let the website fool you - there's nothing "charming" or "idyllic" about that. Luckily, now I'm in a MUCH better condo complex - spending less and getting more. If you're even considering living at Clemens Place, consider yourself warned. Don't be hasty like I was. 1.) Just to warm you up: Man did I want to live here back in the day. I saw it from afar, noticed that there was a Half Door, Pizza spot, Tisane's, Laundry, Braza, and not too far from West Hartford. My chips were all in, until.............DUNT DUNT DUUUUUUUUUUH!...........I became patient doing my own investigation until I felt completely comfortable in signing the lease. 2.) What your eyes may see: Almost always in the day time when you view an apartment you get the positives, the highlights, the best aspects of the showing. I saw some nice apartments, I saw some weird layouts, but I mainly got a good experience. It was at night, or when I left the day time showing that I saw what lied beneath that golden cover. Rats. Roaches. Car theft of some sort. Zombies walking around the streets (my euphemism). An old coworker and friend of mine ended up living there for about a year. I am really amazed at the variety of reviews and experiences that people have had at Clemens Place. Generally, my experience has been good. I know a few people that lived in Clemens Place forever. I thought the price for a one bedroom was pretty fair for the neighborhood considering it includes off street parking, a fully stocked gym and all utilities except for electricity. The neighborhood is walkable and has some of the best brunching in Hartford. Within half a mile you've got two pharmacies, multiple gas stations and corner stores, Bank of America, two dry cleaners, a couple of quirky boutiques, a variety of ethnic and American restaurants and all the fast food you could want (well actually only like two fast food joints). Expand to a mile and you've got therapists, Elizabeth Park, Real Art Ways, even more grocery stores, and great dining on Park. I moved in back in 2012 in the same last minute delirious haze that some other reviewers did. I had a couple of weeks before I was leaving town for a month and would be returning just days before starting my new job. The building is a little quirky, but also warm and charming. Move in was no problem and I was actually permitted to move in two days early for free. I have had quite a few encounters with maintenance (I'm a pretty finicky tenant) and have been quite pleased with the service. First there was the matter of the dishwasher. I thought it was broken, but I actually just didn't know how to use it. They came by three times and finally left me a carefully written note explaining where the power switch was and to stop turning it off. (DOH!) They have also come to handle issues with older locks, the death of my fridge and something weird with my faucet. I have called in requests and submitted them online and had no problem and turnaround time is usually within 2 business days. The one time I was late with my rent (during one of the 500 snow storms we had in Winter '14) they agreed to drop the late fee since it was my first time. No problem. They've been pleasant whenever I need a guest parking pass. That said, in the last few months a few things have happened that have made me pause before making a recommendation to live here. First of all they have cut down some trees -- probably by order of the city -- that have really cut down on curb appeal. Also, I learned the hard way that this is not a neighborhood to walk around alone in the middle of the night in -- even though it's probably one of the safest in Hartford proper. Under new management, they're a little more strict about towing illegally parked cars (fair). Overall, living on the Farmington Avenue side and parking in Lot A I felt was a really great experience with good service for a fair price. If you live here beyond your standard 12 month lease they will charge you $100 a month as a "short term lease fee" in addition to the increased rent rate. 3. DONT MOVE HERE I call maintenance at least once a week because I have the heat set to 90 degrees but the thermostat reads that the actual temperature of my apartment is 60 degrees FREEZING I have a 1 year old and we have to walk around fully clothed with hoodies , sweatpants I have to open the oven for heat. Maintenance and the leasing office says get a heater , plastic up your windows (which I've done already) and that the buildings are old there's nothing they can do. I had one rude maintenance guy come and pretend to burn himself while touching my pipes , I touched it right after him and held my hand there and it's barely warm ! He goes yeah well this is how everybody's apartment feels and shrugs his shoulders to say oh well. How about turn the heat up from the basement and provide at least 65 degrees of heat like the law requires. DO NOT move here. It might seem convincing because of the low price, but the management company does not take care of the grounds at all. It seems the only thing they do take care of is the curb appeal (to lure you in) and the maintenance requests. The reason for my low rating is simply for cleanliness and upkeep of equipment in the laundry facilities/ gym. They DO NOT clean either of these spaces nor do they supply antibacterial spray/wipes in the gym....they do have a dispenser on the wall for this but it is always empty, and when you complain about it they'll tell you they replace it every day but they don't. I am writing this review shortly before my 1 year lease expires. Moving into Clemens seems amazing at first. The exterior of the buildings are well kept and compared to the area around Clemens, this is an oasis in a desert of hood rats and thugs. Being a college student this was great, the leasing process was super easy, the parking lots were gated, and you didn't feel like you were on Farmington Ave. We received keys the the laundry room, gym, parking lot gate keys, and then we moved in. The apartment had brand new carpets, a very small balcony and a decent amount of space for a 2 bedroom. Within 2 months of moving in we started to notice small bumps appearing on our arms and legs and the occasional small beetle looking bug in the hallway. After my girlfriend stayed the night for the first time she woke up covered head to toe in bumps. So we went to the doctor and it turned out we had bedbugs. This happened on a Saturday so first thing Monday morning when the offices opened we alerted them to the presence of the bugs just like the lease asks. And they promised that an exterminator would come to fix the problem. Now with bedbugs, you're supposed to treat entire buildings at a time, not just one unit because the bugs can spread from unit to unit. Clemens place did not do that. For over a month we had to wash every piece of fabric in our apartment once a week, and keep them in plastic bags so the exterminators could spray our apartment. After multiple months of living like this we had had enough and went to the property manager with an ultimatum, we promised to take them to court if they could not supply us with a livable apartment in 21 days, as per CT state law. This worked, within 24 hours they had talks of switching their exterminator company, and they had fixed multiple complaints we had about the building that had previously been ignored by the maintenance staff: -All lights in the stair wells were out including emergency lights(this is a safety hazard) -Our kitchen sink did not work -Our toilet was constantly self-flushing Since then the bug problem has been fixed, but here are a few other things (good and bad) that have happened since we moved in Bad: -Within a week of moving in a car in the parking lot had its wheels stolen -Many abandoned cars strewn throughout the parking lot with both broken windows and slashed tires -No storage unit offered (which was promised in our lease) -Towing residents cars that are legally parked -Front door to building has been missing a door knob since January -I could be the only one this happens to, but the wifi in this building is terrible -Front office staff are impossible to work with -Water temp in shower switches from boiling hot to ice cold randomly Good: -New security cameras cover all places owned by Clemens -Parking lot gates have been upgraded -Security staff is very friendly and have no problem giving you guest parking passes -Walls are thick and we hardly hear our neighbors -Heating and airconditioning are excelent -Great local restaurants, HalfDoor and Sisson Ave Pizza Overall, stay far away from this place. I lived here for a year and dealing with the management office was terrible. Although my employer was paying the rent, it was extremely overpriced. I lived on the Sisson side, which was very loud next to the fire station. I moved in and there was cat hair everywhere and MANY candy and food wrappers (so strange) and garbage in the heaters all along the walls in the living room and bedroom. The counter tops and cabinets were all sticky! I cleaned extensively and did not put up a fuss (which in retrospect I should have). However, when I moved out, they gave me a cleaning checklist. I left the place immaculate- I even got a wet vacuum for the rugs. There was not one hole in the wall. When I saw that I had been charged for cleaning, I asked why, and I was told that they charge everyone. Apparently there is no incentive for cleaning when you leave, so I definitely wasted hours of my time. read more

I went in to view this property recently....I DO NOT RENT, but i have friends that have that warned me against it. Let me start off by staying they do not have just one property they have close to 45 buildings that they rent out. After reading all the horrible reviews of mice, cockroaches and bad maintenance staff along with awful smells ETC. I figured well, we will go in and look around and give them the benefit of the doubt considering "NO ONE VERY WRITES GOOD REVIEWS"-Later stated by their sales person showing us the rooms. So here is my experience, and I hope it saves you time and a head ache. I want to start by saying, every review you read is 100% true.. We walked into the main building to sit down, Automatically I smelt a heavy odor that I couldn't point out until later in my visit. The main office wasn't gorgeous but it wasn't awful. It had new appliances and updated wood, along with nice decorating. WELL OF COURSE IT DID! It was the apartment they use in all the pictures to lure in poor suckers (like me) that need affordable living. Then we were greeted by the "sales rep?" I say it like this because she was obviously extremely knowledgeable about all the health and safety concerns she was about to try and sell us. ( I'd like to see her live in one of those apartments) but anyways. So, after sitting with her for a few minutes and talking about the difference in price between updated apartments and not updated apartments. I finally asked the dreaded question so How true is all the mice problems, cockroaches and etc. She started her small rant with, well" I legally cant lie to you, like every old building we have our issues. I'm sure you read about the slow maintenance staff, the cockroaches, the mice, the bedbugs." I stopped her right there WAIT BED BUGS, THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I AM INTERESTED IN THAT IS NASTY. She went on to assure me that though these are problems ANYWHERE I live is going to have the same issues.... which is not true. And said they work hard to CONTROL the issue, please take notice that she did not say ELIMINATE, she said control... and the way she said it showed.. they really care less. Fast forward, we went to look at the actual rooms and I kid you not I almost passed out they were so disgusting. I could still smell the awful aroma I talked about earlier but figured maybe some candles could help that. The rooms were so small you wouldn't be able to fit a queen bed in them let alone a bed and a desk. All the appliances needed to be updated, I say this because the appliances WERE OLDER THAN ME. They suck so much unnecessary electricity that your electric bill will be triple what it should be just because your renting from a cheap company that doesn't care, they are also a huge fire hazard. The smell that I mentioned earlier made sense the second I opened up the kitchen cabinet doors to see a huge pile of Rat poop. MIND YOU NOT MICE...RAT! And a sticky trap with huge rat half alive... I am going to assume he was not the only Rat considering it looked like one had chewed his leg off to escape leaving only the foot on the pad. That smell I first smelt was rat poison... I would like to remind you that this is one of the property's they had cleaned and prepared to show people to move into ASAP... I cant even imagine what it looked like before. I also forgot to mention that I am highly allergic to cockroaches and though none were seen, I left the property with huge rashes all over my hands from touching things... Only assuming that its because at some point cockroaches were very much around and no one cleaned since. I had not really said much to the lady showing the apartments other then letting her know i wasn't completely thrilled with the room size. And also about the mice, and rats..... Honestly anyone that works for a company like that already knows how awful it is, and has a special place in hell for selling not only single people rat, and bug infested apartments but families with children.. The neighborhood is great, good bars and food, really close to the University of Hartford. I lived here and had to move out after a few months due to the un-inhabitability of my apartment. It was not joking matter. My daughter fell ill all the time. You shouldn't have mice or roaches or any other pesky issues such as bed bugs, which this place is infested with in almost all their buildings. I moved to Hartford for residency and was keen on finding a place to live that would be safe, well-kept and affordable. I was initially hesitant on signing a lease here based on some of the previous reviews on yelp. However, after living here for close to a year it is clear to me that many of these negative reviews are outdated as well as inaccurate. Overall I've have had a great living experience at Clemens Place and do plan on living here through the duration of my residency. The management staff has been exceptionally receptive and helpful. In example, my heater was not functioning appropriately so I called Sandy at the leasing office. Within 15 minutes the maintenance staff was at my door ready to help. There have been several other occasions where I have contacted the staff for assistance, which have been handled effectively and in a timely manner. I would say that overall I am very impressed by the degree of responsiveness, friendliness and quality of the management staff at Clemens. To add, the location is excellent; close to west hartford, hwy 84, as well as downtown. There is a gas station, park, library and a cool bar just steps away. My one bedroom apt is also very affordable (heating/water is included). The only draw backs are no in unit washer/dryer and lack of elevator in my building (although good for exercise). I would highly recommend any young professionals looking for an affordable place to live to consider clemens. read more

When we finally make the move to leave since the owner of this place did nothing about it; the maintence had did an inspection of the apartment and stole money. If I could rate Clemens place with zero stars I would. I made the mistake of reserving an apartment BEFORE it was renovated (How could I have been so stupid?!). The shifty, penny pinching management saw this as the perfect opportunity to bend me over and financially sodomize me, the poor innocent out-of-towner. I then moved in to my overpriced apartment, with its appliances and ammenities dating back to the pre-war era (not desert storm). No mirror or vanity, no working stove, no central lighting, no air conditioner (as promised in the lease). Do yourself a favor, and do NOT even interact with this company and these people. Youre better off dealing with an owner of a multi-family or something. Little do they know, that I work for the Fed and I have a real estate lawyer on retainer. Rent is high considering cars are constantly broken into with no concern from the main office. Neighbors are extremely loud stomping and screaming, again, with no concern from the main office. Mouse infestation has lasted over one year, they will tell you to move all of your belongings out of the cabinets, closets and away from the walls to forget to send the exterminator and says oh oops you have to wait another week now. Very questionable neighborhood overall, not safe at night. There is a gym which is a bonus and off street parking is also important but thats about all that is good about this place. If you lived in the area and know the area you will have some minor problem here and there but I will say that company is a whole lot better then a few years before. I called the cops and everything. My friends from UHART advised me not to live here and stay clear. I lived here back in the 1980s. I woke up one morning to find a stranger on my 3rd floor balcony of my 16 Owens Street apartment who said he was there to work on the building and was sent by management. I checked with management the next day only to find that no such workers were working on the building and none should have been on my balcony. This whole complex has a SEVERE cockroach problem as do most places in Hartford. I have spoken to other people who live or have lived in Hartford and they have all said that cockroaches are a major problem with anyone living in that city. It is just the way of life there. I was mugged 4 times while in Hartford. Twice, I was held up for my car in separate "car jackings". In all of the attempts, luckily, I was able to get away unharmed except once when my throat was slit. It was only a superficial wound and I denied treatment. I was also mugged once when walking around Bushnell Park one night. Luckily, a man in a Honda Civic pulled up and asked me if I needed help and I told him the guy on the bike was trying to mug me and he told me to get in and I did and went home and reported it to the Hartford Police. Within a few weeks, the man who tried to mug me, at knife point, was back on the streets and was waiting for me as I exited my home. He asked me why I reported him and I told him that it could have been my mother or sister who he was trying to mug and walked away. Luckily, the encounter was in a heavily trafficked area and he left me alone. Save your sanity and your money and find a better, cleaner, safer, and less expensive place outside of the Hartford area in which to live. read more

I moved to Hartford from Massachusetts for a job and after viewing some pretty scary places, came across Clemens Place. It seemed like a good fit, the money was reasonable, close to work, everyone in the office seemed super nice, and I liked the idea of having security. After living here for a few months, I understand why people haven't rated this place higher. They will try to squeeze every dime they can out of you, in my experience most recently by saying my rent was late and charging me a bunch of ridiculous fees in association with the tardiness. Their office hours are not convenient for those who work a regular 9-5 job, so it is very difficult to reach someone unless I call from work, which always turns out to be frustrating and time consuming and usually results in no assistance. When I called to have something fixed in my apartment nobody came for a few days, so I called and asked what was going on and the woman told me they didn't have any record of my request for maintenance and that it would be a few more days until someone could fix the issue. All of the apartments have different lay outs and when I moved, I was shown a few of them. After I decided to follow through with the lease agreement, I was given an apartment with a layout I had not seen (and do not like- weird set up, no space). The leasing agent said she was unable to show me that actual physical unit because she didn't have permission from the current tenant. A week before I was to move, I drove to Hartford again from Boston to sign the lease and the woman in the office told me she wasn't even sure if the current tenant was leaving! The lease agreement clearly states tenants must give 60 days notice, yet they were offering me an apartment they weren't even sure was available!! The apartment didn't look like it had been cleaned before I moved in- dishes left in the kitchen, a pan in the oven, and marks all over the walls. The closets are incredibly small, the floors and ceilings are slanted (not exaggerating, I've actually used my level to verify that I wasn't imagining things). The wire racks in the closets are too flimsy to hold anything. Also, the walls here are paper thin. I can hear everything my neighbors, both beside me, under me, and anyone coming up the stairs or in the hallway, are doing- I'm talking when my next door neighbors wake up to pee at 3A.M. I hear their footsteps, the toilet flush, and more footsteps when they're walking back to bed. Not only that, but the smell of weed is a constant in my building. Laundry is an issue, no matter the night. People are always leaving clothes in the machines. The gym is NOT sufficiently equipped. There is always a wait to use whatever machine and there isn't an empty room or space to stretch, plus it smells. I think its important to be comfortable where you're living and I do not feel that way. I will not be resigning another lease agreement with this place. read more
