We decided to try a spot for philly cheesesteaks and we were very satisfied! We ordered a spicy and classic cheesesteak and a side of fries and everything came out amazing. Incredible, huge, high quality Philly sandwiches. I got the Block, my husband got the standard with fried onions and mayo, and we both loved them. While that may be easy to presume, the relaxed nature of the service staff and homely bar on the other side of the restaurant would prove otherwise. There are around 4-5 ordering stations scattered about the institution with whiffs of ribeye greeting you at every corner of each room. Food I've had a few options from the menu and none have disappointed me .My tastebuds have sampled everything from the garlic Parmesan fries to the steaks. Despite the offerings being solid, there's something missing in the flavor profile of the steak. I may be in the minority, but I prefer my steak finely chopped. While not a noteworthy issue, it does make me grade this establishment just a tad below A+. THE SAUCE As referenced earlier, I would say this institution leads the larger* known names in the city now that Jim's(RIP)has been lost to fire. We are in town for the Philly Marathon and so are thousands of people. Everyone has the same idea to eat Philly Cheesesteak after the run LOL. The block (his) - similar to what I got with jalapenos The cheesesteaks came out in about 10 minutes and I was shocked by how much meat they put in it. First off, before I get into the review I feel the need to address this to anyone that works at Cleavers: wtf is up with the techno music?! It's 1pm on a Wednesday and I'm on my lunch break, not 2am Sunday and ordering bottle service. I don't need extra bass with my steak. Now onto the review. The cheesesteak was solidly good. Out of all the superstars in the city, this place is the role player that's consistent and does the dirty work to help teams win rings. It does all the fundamental things right. The bread is a very sturdy and seeded roll that isn't gonna fall apart at all. I had American cheese and the cheese was so melted throughout the sandwich you couldn't tell it used to be sliced cheese. Perfect. That's the way it should be. The fried onions were a great complimentary taste to the steak as well. It had a nice sweetness to go with the rest of the taste. As for the sandwich, it was a good size where you don't feel overly stuffed and want to take a nap afterwards. I also had a side of waffle fries to go with it. It was a decent sized portion but plain fries shouldn't cost $6.25 unless they're a shareable size or some kind of topping on it. There's plenty of places in the city that are better but certainly there are way more that are worse. If you're taking out of town guests for cheesesteaks I'd skip this place but if you live or work near here, you can't go wrong eating here a couple of times a month. read more

My only issue with their service was that they make you wait outside until your number is called. I ordered a Cheesesteak with whiz. I really enjoyed the packaging with this cheesesteak. They put it in a box which makes it easy to eat when on the road. It's not as messy and everything stays in it's place when you open it up. The cheesesteak itself was very tasty. Cleavers threw out my sandwich order, and they had no processes in place to fix the situation. We walked in around 1:15 p.m. on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and ordered two chicken cutlet sandwiches. One came out very quickly, and the other one was delayed. During that time, another girl picked up her order, and then because the upstairs was so full (because the manager told everyone to go wait upstairs for their order), it took her a while to find a seat and discover she had the wrong sandwich. She then came back downstairs and told the staff that she had the wrong sandwich, and the staff literally just threw the sandwich away. That sandwich was my sandwich. I went up to the staff and let them know that I was pretty sure that the sandwich they had just thrown away was my sandwich. A staff member went into the trashcan and visually confirmed it was my sandwich. They said they were unable to make a new sandwich or issue a refund for a sandwich that I clearly had not received, because their manager had stepped out to go shopping. During his shift. They also did not have a way to contact him to let him know that there was an issue, apparently. So we had to wait for him to come back, and then wait for the order to be remade. By the time we left with our takeout sandwiches, we had spent over 40 minutes at Cleavers. It is unacceptable that after almost a decade of being open, Cleavers has no staff training process in place for fixing errors. I also received no apology from the manager, and only an insincere apology ("apologies", said with sarcasm) from the staff, for something that was clearly their mistake. Cleavers is littered with signs stating that they won't issue refunds or remake orders if it was the customer's error, but they apparently never bothered to figure out what to do when they make a mistake. A place that treats its customers so poorly is not a place that I want to patronize. read more
