EVERYONE here is nice and more importantly, they all seem honest... that's right. I've actually used the term "honest" when writing a review about a mechanic. I'll give you a moment to let that sink in. .... My car was making strange noises. I took it to the shop; it ended up being my rotors and brakes that needed to be changed. They were so efficient and detail. The mechanic called me within the hour to give me a quote, which was completely reasonable. Then in a couple hours my car was ready. The shop is very clean, and the customer service is amazing. You are not a number; they treat you as if it was their own car. They have also answered so many of my little questions about my car- why it acts the way it does, whats normal vs. not normal etc. Since I pretty much, just expect to put the key in the ignition and want it to start. Not knowing what else is connected to what. I just don't know what the strange sounds are or what needs to be fixed when. This place is close to my work. I usually take my car here for oil change and other maintenance problems. They do a good job, Gary does a great job of explaining the problem my car has and giving me different options to go about fixing it. Another thing I really like about CVS, is the fact that the owner gives me ride to my work/home if my car has to stay over for hours! So overall the customer service is excellent. read more

I've been meaning to write a review for awhile. Having just slammed another local business, I figured I'd better write a positive one or you all might think I'm a curmudgeon. We've been taking our family vehicles here for over 20 years, and for good reason. They're honest, quick and do quality work. They've had plenty of opportunities to stick it to us if they were dishonest, and they never have. They keep records on our vehicles to track what they've done over time. Worst gas station ever. Highest gas prices in town. Refused to provide air for low tires which is a DOT mandate. Tried to strongarm into buying overpriced gas for use of air compressor. This station goes above and beyond to provide excellent and friendly service. Gary is the greatest. He has patiently explained every detail I ask him about and has let me know the exact information on cost, recommendations, and outcomes. Peter is a wonderful mechanic and among other things solved a very elusive problem I had with wheel noise several months ago. He is obviously proud of his work and goes to great lengths to make the job right. When I needed help this last time I used their online form to tell them the problem and set up a time to have the troubleshooting done. This was late at night on a weekend. I got an answer and advice from Amir within a couple of hours. That was way beyond what I expected. Way to lose business folks. I came in with a low tire, and asked if they would put air in it. I was told that there was a $1 air compressor to the side and I was to use that. I have purchased my over priced gas here since moving to Clayton. For $1 they have now lost my year long business. There is a gas station across the street, so I will be going there from now on, or go 1/2 miles down the road and pay 50 cents a gallon less. read more

They are extremely rude. I needed air for my tires, and they wouldn't give it to me. If a company has an air compressor, it's illegal to charge for it. They wouldn't give it to me, so I put quarters in to use it (which shouldn't even be an option since it's illegal to charge for it), and then they refused to turn it on. I told them I put quarters in, and they said I needed to purchase gas for air, but I didn't need any gas. You think I'm gonna purchase gas when you won't give me free air? FORGET IT. Let me tell you why I rated this 5 stars. I stopped by to get some gas. While filling up, I went into the waiting room and looked out and noticed that some of the technicians or mechanics were going up to cars at the pumps and helping the drivers. They were wiping windows, lifting the hood, and especially attentive to seniors. I asked the gentleman behind the desk (Gary) where the owner was as I wanted to complement him on the nostalgia performance. He respond, he's the one that is helping that elderly woman back into her car. (I noticed he was checking tires and asking her if she needed anything else). When he came back into the reception area, we briefly chatted. His name is Amir. He explained that when ever his technicians aren't busy, they are to be out on the pumping islands assisting customers. Then a client who was in the shop, talking to the service writer turned to me and said, they are always like that and I've been coming here for years. It turns out he was a state senator. While the mechanics there are very friendly, the money I spent there was not spent well. I brought my car in with no idea what was wrong with it and relied on them to figure it out so I could have them fix it. However, after paying for repairs suggested by them, my car was still not fixed. I took my car back and asked for a full diagnostic because it still wasn't running right. According to them they couldn't figure out what else might be wrong with my car. However they did suggest repairs to the car unrelated to the problem. I agreed, trusting that they knew what they were doing. The repairs ended up being in the $500 range, but did not do anything to solve the problem I had with the car. Since they couldn't fix my car, a friend of mine suggested his mechanic who he had been going to for years. I took my car to the new mechanic and in less than a day not only did he figure out what the problem was (the spark plug wires needed to be replaced) but my car is running like a dream. This seems like a problem any mechanic would be able to identify if they did a full diagnostic, which is what I requested when I brought it back a second time. As someone who doesn't know anything about cars I rely on the mechanics to not only fix the problem, but to give me a fair deal which I feel they didn't do ( I seriously wonder if the unrelated repairs were even needed). I will not be relying on them again should I have a problem with my car. In response to the owner: I don't believe you planning to tow my car has any relevance to the fact that the problem wasn't found or fixed the first two times I brought the car in. Not to mention I came to pick the car up a second time in November and found that the car was still not running properly so I brought it back immediately. Then I talked to Gary on Dec. 3rd when I was informed that the only possible problem you could find had to do with the ignition, I was given an estimate and I gave Gary the go ahead on the repairs. If I not only picked up the car in Nov but also talked to Gary at the beginning of December how could the car be abandoned for 2 months? Either way I brought my car there 3 times and the problem was not figured out or fixed. Went there because my truck didn't pass smog and I didn't want to go through the hassle of driving to my regular mechanic in San Francisco. I had a print out of exactly what was wrong with my truck yet was quoted by Gary $228 for a diagnostic and $373.52 for the repair. I asked him why should I pay for a diagnostic when I have a printout of exactly what was wrong. He said fine then just pay for the repair. I didn't like that answer so decided to make the drive to SF to see my regular mechanic. I was charged $154 to fix the sensor and had my truck back in 45 minutes. I was so glad to find an affordable, and speedy mechanic in town that I can trust, but I don't live here now. Every time I brought my car here Garry and the staff have been very helpful. They don't add any "fluff" (unnecessary stuff) here - they just tell you what you need and how much it's going to cost you. I've taken my car here mostly because of convenience. This recent repair was replacing a master cylinder. The repair was done properly and the car was ready when promised (although I would have wanted it earlier in the day). I found a 10% coup in on Yelp. When I tried to use it, I was shown the fine print; new customers only. It seems that the owner values new customers over returning customers. BTW, the reason I couldn't get my car soon was that some of the mechanics were let go because of slow business. They have never steered me in the wrong direction, and I believe they are very honest about their work. Their idea of what an estimate is and my idea of what an estimate is are way different. An estimate of $114.00 and a final bill of $163.18 makes you blink your eyes more than once! It turned out that the "estimate" was the cost of the labor only! $163.18 is probably a fair price to replace an interior door handle, but I felt that the estimate of $114.00 was just to get me to leave my car with them and to get my business. A statement of labor costs is not the same thing as an estimate. read more

please do not go to this place to fix your car!!!! they said there were no codes that came up and they miss diagnosed my car. $600 dollars later and only a less than 15 minute drive my car was doing the same thing. they offered to tow it back and then tried to charge me for the tow and said it was a secondary problem and i would have to pay more money for them to look at it and basically guess again...... on top of all that i had a friend look at my car and a code came up right away. the only thing that need to be done was replacing the spark plugs. i paid over $600 for them to guess and lie to me!!!! trying to go to court to get my money back. do yourself a favor and go somewhere else where they are honest with you. read more

I will NEVER be a customer again! Today my son stopped for gas and had car trouble. We got his car into a parking spot and as we headed out to auto part store a very rude man approached and told him "you see the sign? No parking! Be gone by morning or I will tow you!" He never offered help or assistance it even advice. Then at Noon when we returned to fix the problem, a woman yelled at me for parking when the tanker was there. I had no idea there were rules about parking relevant a tanker. Again, no service from her at all. This was my first experience with Clayton Valley Shell; it was recommended by the AAA Road Service driver who assisted me with the broken down car. My car was towed to the shop on Friday afternoon and was ready on Saturday. Based on the internet pricing comparisons in my area for starter replacement, the cost was a bit on a high side, but I do not know how reliable that pricing is. The final pricing was actually about $30 less than what was quoted. Overall I am happy with the service and will definitely give them another try. And, they are open on Saturdays!!! read more

My car broke down on Ygnacio Valley Rd and I had it towed to Clayton Valley Shell as it was the closest garage in the area and would be the cheapest tow. I told Gary, the technician, that everybody thought it was the Alternator but what do they or I know; we're not the professionals. I, mistakenly assumed, that Gary would diagnose the car and do the proper repairs. Gary, instead, simply changed the alternator and gave me back my car ''fixed''. Driving home from Shell, that same day, I, again, broke down. The car was still exhibiting the EXACT SAME symptoms it had before Gary worked on it. Not to mention I was charged $733 to fix an alternator which is a $200+ part that he charged 400+ for and $200 in labor!!!!!! RIDICULOUS RIP OFF especially since the car AGAIN broke down. I will NEVER go back to this garage and will tell everybody I know to STEER CLEAR of this place. Horribly disappointed. What a joke. LUCKILY, Raymonds Automotive in Hayward took care of me. They PROPERLY diagnosed my car and found a laundry list of items including a bad battery cable which is what was draining the battery and alternator and causing my car to break down. It is now fixed and runs like a champ, NO THANKS to Clayton Valley Shell. Lastly, do you think Gary offered to reimburse me for his BAD handy work? NO...not for a minute. On Feb. 13 15 I had my diesel truck serviced and got smog check, truck did not pass smog because of glow plug controller. I was charged $357.22 for replacement, I called Winter Chevy in Pittsburg and got quote for the same part, $159.00 I was overcharged $ 198.22 Plus a labor charge of $252.00 for analyst and installation. Don't know her name but twice this woman made me feel some type of way getting gas here, the first time she couldn't take cash cuz she said the register was closed, all I had was 50 cents on my debit card and I needed gas bad and was in a hurry so I told them to charge 50 cents and she just looked at me like something was wrong with me, then her co-worker or friend was behind her and just smiling all big like it's funny, and it's like well yeah that's all I have since you can't accept my cash!!! And now your gonna laugh at my situation? Then today all I had was $3 worth of quarters and dimes but she refused to take my change saying she has too much change already and I can go to the liquor store and get 3 dollar bills, at this point I just remembered the last time I was there to get gas and barely had any when she and her friend basically laughed at me. I kind of pleaded with her like this is all I got can't you just take it? But she still refused, so I just walked away and yelled out not to be lazy and went across the street at chevron got gas no problem giving them the change. Honestly why would I go to the liquor store when it would take the same time going over to Chevron across the street.
