We had a couple options for our gas fireplace, we picked Clayton Richard's because it was in our town. If I read the Yelp reviews I would NOT have picked them I think it was the 1st week in November when we went to Clayton Richard's stone & Fireplace. We met the lady at the desk (which turns out is the sister in law & not all that friendly) We picked out our stove & Eric came to price it out. We came up with we were buying the stone and mantle & in Eric's words, prices his jobs "with everything" installed, including stone and mantle. Weeks went by then months. When it came in, we we were told by Eric, the fireplace came in broken, that they had to order another one. But a few weeks earlier the sister in law told us it was back ordered. At this point I purchased the stone. I wasn't paying to much attention to the stonework, ,but was completed. Eric says let me know when the mantle is in, & the gas line is done They don't do it, but said just get it to the fireplace, we'll hook it up. So i got the line close, and figured they would want to install a line from the fireplace to the pipe. Now that the stonework was done, I noticed that the stone was higher up then I'd envisioned. With it being so high, how was It going to work, adding another 6" or 8" mantle. It was going to look absolutely ridiculous. I mean it was going to bring the bottom of the tv to a minimum of 58" almost 5 foot off the ground. So NOT noticing at first glance that the stonework was off center, and there was a 2 1/2 to 3" difference. I had the mantle cut to the size of the length of the stone. Ok mantle is in, and we call the store, and Eric gets back to us and says ok it'll be 700.00 to install. We absolutely could not believe he was charging us. We knew that Eric specifically told us he does not like to bill separately for jobs, that he charges one price. & that's for the entire job. It was then that we noticed the stonework was "OFF" we called the store and told them we need Eric to come and look at the job, that they screwed it up. And they also have to complete the job ( it still was NOT hooked up) .So one of the guys came, and I showed him what the issue was. If you could have seen his face ..it was priceless. OOOFFF I said we really didn't notice it, until later. We also told Oscar, that the stonework was really high, that they did not account for the mantle being installed. So he took pictures and obviously sent them to Eric. Oscar plugs in the receiver or whatever, and tells me the gas liine isn't installed. I told him Eric told me to get it close to the fireplace and they'll hook it up. But he tells me they dont do that.. I found that odd, it literally took me 10 minutes to hook up. And because we were so bothered by the work he did abd the fact that he was charging us to mouth the mantle. I actually paid someone else to hang it. We even had them cut back the stone a row so we can have the height of the tv somewhat normal. (Mind you this was like in January, when it was finished) Ok Eric calls me the next day or so. Says I heard there was an issue with the fireplace. I say yeah it's "OFF" IN every sense of the word. And I told him seriously this is like basic skills, this is level and symmetrical 101. So now we're going back and forth about the job, and what they did. I didn't flip out, yell, I just figured he'd fix it. We did have a balance of 2,000 and Eric says what if I take off 500. I said Eric the job cost us 12 THOUSAND DOLLARS! & the entire job is messed up. I mean this isn't an easy fix. I said you really need to come and look at the job. So he says ok let's call it a wash and forget about the balance. Which was more what I was thinking of. We called the store for some reason and the lady says we have a note here that we have a balance of 2000, and we're not to come back to the house..something like that. So at this point the fireplace was not even tested by them, "They were done with the job" they never once saw it or tested to see if it was working. That I think is terrible business..this is a propane stove and just left as is! A few weeks later Eric calls me says I didn't like the wsy it ended, I dont think I ( meaning himself) did the right thing. Says i want to make it right, that he was going to fix it, and don't worry about anything we'll take care of it. The way the phone call went, he was fixing it for nothing, to clear his name &rreputation. He comes over looks at and first glance says the air is wrong on the unit. Its causing the chimney to have all that soot and glass is black. I said well when your son left, he left with pictures thats it. He never mentioned anything about completing the job. It just needed a flex line ..and nobody once asked if it was hooked up, or anything. You guys just left. So he adjusted the air and had his guys clean the glass. He says ok ill set some up. I visited the showroom and met with a nice lady who seemed well informed. I made an appointment for an estimate. I told her our gate code. When the man showed up, he was angry that he couldn't get in the gate and later admitted he had it written down correctly, but inputted it incorrectly. Then he told me my fireplace was shallow and cheap and he didn't know if he had an insert that could fit. I told him my neighbors in my condo complex have had inserts with no issue. He said if I asked what brand unit they had installed, maybe he could help me. I will just use the installer they used- he will not be getting my business after unprofessional behavior. read more

After terrible experiences at OTHER fireplace stores on LI, someone referred me to Clayton Richards. I visited the showroom and was overwhelmed by the politeness and knowledge of Susan. I went in to order glass doors and walked out having ordered glass doors and a wood burning stove. The doors arrived in no time and were beautifully installed. The stove was delayed, mostly bc of the manufacturer and COVID delays but on installation day the team made it relatively seamless. Eric from Clayton Richards did such a wonderful job on our fireplace. We were having difficulty getting a mantle to fit on our fireplace as the fireplace/masonry work was very uneven. Eric came and gave us a very reasonable quote but also gave us a different idea of how to make the fireplace great. He not only lowered and leveled out the brick work, but he also repaired and painted the wall that was now exposed. We are so happy with the results. I would highly recommend them. read more

I would give this place a zero star rating if I could... my nightmare started November 2018 when my pellet stove broke. After researching pellet stoves there are only a handful of people who fix them on Long Island. The first person I called could not come to fix the stove till January 5th. The pellet stove being the main source of heat in the house, I couldn't wait. I called Clayton Richards company and explained the above situation and they were able to come sooner. I forgot exactly but it was the first or second week of December that they could come so I offered them the job to fix pellet stove. I wasn't very happy of the $175 it cost to have them just walk through the door and diagnose the problem. This $175 was NOT credited toward the fee to fix it. Also Eric the owner completely sandbagged me... he said "the problem with the pellet stove's main computer was jammed up with dog and cat hair" and he didn't have time to fix it till the end of January. It was then that I realized he was a liar because I don't have a dog or a cat and figured maybe the previous owner did but why would it work for two years and all of a sudden jam up? I also was disappointed as they promised when I made the appointment it would be fixed in December. Otherwise I would've gave the job to the January 5th guy instead. Bottom line he charged me another $400 and nothing was fixed.. now I'm $575 in to freeze and he could not come back until March. He comes back in March, I give him more money, again for the same problem to not be fixed... Then the house sells in August and I feel guilty to leave new owners with broken pellet stove so I call back in October 2019 and Eric comes back November. Takes more money not to fix the stove and guess what? ..the stove worked for two hours and breaks down again. Insults me by saying that the pellet stove is a low end $1000 model from Home Depot after he took a $1000 bucks not to fix it. So I do what a good person would do and credit the new homeowner $2k to buy a new model. To sum it up DO NOT do business with Eric Anderson, if u think this story isn't true just call him up and have one conversation with him... he's about as nice as a junkyard dog and as smart as a third grader. read more

Prices are ridiculous. Charged me $750 to insulate a chimney that did not have insulation. Charged me $175 for a estimate and then charged me another $250 just to clean my pellet stove. All they did was pull it out and vacuum the stove and the pipe. At the end of the day I paid $1200 for a job that took less than 2 hours. I could have hired someone to put insulation in snd clean my stove for less than half of what they charged. Rip offs. read more

We've been using Clayton Richards for over 20 years without issue. Recently, we had a big problem with them. One of the pipes on our wood stove was reinstalled incorrectly. It was soooo bad that there was smoke in the whole room. We called and the owner, Eric, came over. Unfortunately, besides having a piss poor attitude, he didn't help at all, didn't offer to fix the problem. Blamed it on the "weather"! Very disappointed. read more

I called spoke to a women on phone. Had to wait two weeks for appointment and gave me a 10-2 window. Fine. Appointment day I'm waiting I get a voicemail at 12:15 from the guy saying that he needs to talk to me first before he comes out to see me. Why didn't the lady say that in the first. They have the worst customer service in the world. Made an appointment to have my chimney swept, when the guy arrived he was immediately called away on an "emergency" and they wanted to reschedule 3 weeks down the road. I guess there is so much business out there that they dont care about customer service. read more

Do NOT waste your time or money at Clayton Richards in Patchogue, NY! My husband and I bought a gas stove from this business in December 2012. My son has breathing problems, so we had our wood burning fireplace removed and this stove installed, all of which was very pricey. The stove has barely worked since we purchased it, we have had it repaired 5+ times in the last 10 months. The owner, Eric, is unprofessional, rude and does not stand by his products. He told my husband "I feel bad I sold you a lemon, but I am not going to reimburse you or exchange it" ?!! I called yesterday to request a copy of our warranty and their return policy, Eric started yelling, refused to provide us with the entitled documents and hung up on me. Please do not give this place your business - they treat their customers poorly and their products are junk. We have contacted a lawyer and will begin with small claims court. read more
