I used to work in Rochester but have never stopped in here. We met some friends downtown to walk around the shops & see the lights. They wanted to grab dinner somewhere & suggested this place. It does have the typical sports bar type feel, but our server was friendly & helpful! My husband & I had tried a new Mexican restaurant earlier in the day & we're still pretty full from that so we just ordered chicken noodle soup, French onion soup, sweet potato fries & southwest eggrolls. The soups were good, the sweet potato fries were cooked & seasoned with cinnamon sugar perfectly, & the southwest eggrolls were delicious! Our friends got their boneless wings & the Mahoney melt on a gluten free bun with tots. They both enjoyed their meals & I tried the tots which were perfectly crispy & had a yummy seasoning on them! I would definitely come back to try more food! Another note is that I hate using public bathrooms, but we had our 6 month old daughter with us & she needed changed so I took her into the bathroom. CJ's is always solid. We come sometimes with a larger crowd and they're always helpful getting us a large table or 2 together. They have a lot of items on the menu, so there's something for everyone. Nothing gourmet, but decent bar food. Their pizza is really good if you're in the mood for that. Drinks are reasonable and the staff is generally attentive. I've driven past this place no less than one million times and just stopped in for the first time yesterday as I've heard great things about their Mahoney Chicken Sandwich. It's certainly a sports bar... tons of seating, lots of TVs and a really nice looking bar area. Service was a little slow, but they were pretty busy and seemed to be short staffed. I'd say we waited a few minutes above average to give our order and to get our food, but it was no big deal. Server was friendly and did a great job despite being rushed. The menu was decent, but as previously stated, I was set on getting the Mahoney and it lived up to the expectations! The chicken was perfectly fried, crispy, juicy and super flavorful! It was built well and didn't fall apart... probably one of the best chicken sandwiches that I've ever had! The fries were run of the mill frozen, but the seasoning was really nice. Wow!!! What a fanatic night! I was meeting up with a friend to watch the Lions Game and he suggested CJ Mahoney's. It's the half way point between us so it was perfect. When I arrived he was already seated in a booth with the game ready to go!!!!!! It was a packed house for sure, so we got lucky. On Lions watch games they raffle off a jersey! How cool is that?! Not only is this review for the overall experience, but the steak tips were out of this world! I've been on a Steak tip kick and I thought I had found the best around already but CJ's tips are #1 in my opinion and the zip sauce OMG! For a little extra I added sautéed onions and mushrooms. Server didn't make good job to make us waiting to orders and waters that took forever until server feel like to come back.. I don't feel comfortable to waiting for so long .. somehow I see all foods are not really cooked like good .... I ate and I have bad stomach led me to vomited. Service was kind of slow on a night where only 5 other tables were seated. Our server was really nice but everything took so long to get to us. The drinks were really weak and we all felt pretty disappointed about that. The food was ok but nothing special. They have a pretty good variety of items to choose from but nothing really stood out. It all lacked flavor. I'd say my favorite thing was the mozzarella sticks but you really can't mess those up too badly. Went during the Lions game, expected it to be super packed but there were seats at the bar as well as open tables. Lots of TVs ensured being able to see the game no matter where you sit. We thought to stop by here for A drink to catch up with our cousin. He was actually the one who suggested to go here so we didn't have to go far. We sat ourselves, the waiter was at least prompt to come around to see what we would like. We all wanted tall beers, but for some reason, my cousin received his in a pint glass. Mind you, we were seated a table away from the machine. I heard him talking to a blonde woman and she said, "It's playing those songs because somebody is buying it and requesting those songs." Great place to watch the game. It's a bar but the food is not bar food. I enjoyed the steak bites and they were cooked to my liking. Bar service was slow as it was a big bar with only one guy working the bar. UPDATE: I went back for a second try as any great yelper would do. This time I had the ribs (dry seasoned) and they were tasty and tender. The biggest difference was the service. The person working the bar was polite, friendly and attentive. She just returned from a personal vacation to Florida so maybe she was in a better mood than others or they need to simply get the rest of the team working like her. Over the last 4-5 months I have developed an odd obsession with their chicken dinner. Months ago, when I first started ordering it, it was the most amazing thing I had ever tasted. You got 2 chicken breasts- cooked to perfection, rice pilaf, topped with caramelized squash and zucchini. It would be enough for me to eat half and save half for lunch for the next day. I was ordering it through doordash 2 to 3 times per week, sometimes picking up but ordering through there for the discount. Yes, I'm aware that that is very easy to cook myself.. but that's how good it was. Plus, through doordash you save 20% all the time. About a month and a half into my growing obsession, they must have hired a new cook. The chicken became dry, I noticed the portion of rice getting smaller, and the vegetables were no longer cut into bite-sized pieces (like this ), but instead long, thick chunks. No biggie, I guess. I just started ordering the double rice portion (which comes out to be what a regular portion USED to be). And I cut the vegetables in half. More recently, each time I order it, I noticed the portion is smaller and smaller. I just ordered it last night and... they may as well just say one chicken breast because they cut them so small that if you put it together it equals one... maybe. I'm just disappointed that I have told so many people about this meal and by the time they get around to ordering it, it's going to be a kids size meal with two bite-size grilled chicken fingers, vegetables that are bigger than the pieces of chicken and 3 lil pieces of rice buried underneath. They'll think I'm crazy for even raving about it. I'll still give it 4 stars because at one time it was amazing and everything else I've eaten has been good. Plus, I don't want to be one of those people who only comes to leave a negative review. I've been meaning to leave a positive one for a while now. I'm hoping it's just a cook thing and it will change soon. I understand if it's because they're offering 20% off the meal through doordash, so they want to cut down the portion size. However, I would rather pay full price to just have the regular, full size portion back. Now I have to pay $3 for double rice and $3 for double veggie just to get what used to be the original portion. And hope the chicken is so dry that I choke. read more

Originally from Michigan and stopped by here while visiting. It was a great lunch spot to meet some old friends. It wasn't too crowded and the servers were awesome and provided great recommendations. We had the skillet tot appetizer and yes, yes you should order it! So cheesy with pork and a hint of sweet bbq! I opted for a Greek salad, it had tons of veggies and high quality grilled chicken. The lettuce was mostly ice berg but the veggies made up for it! One friend had the chicken quesadilla with perfect crispness and balanced amounts of cheese to chicken. My other friend had the Mahoney based on server recommendation and he loved it. The fries have that awesome crispy breading type taste. Second time coming here - visited well over a year or so ago and gave an adequate but critical review. The owner reached out to me and made promises that changes were going to be made. Interested to see what changes were made for our second visit. I will increase my review from a 3 to a 4 - but the 4 is on the low side. Came in on a Saturday night and stayed from 630p-730p. It is seat yourself and plenty of options on where to sit - whether it is a table, booth, or bar. The crowd was diverse - families with small kids to teenagers, older and younger couples, as well as some groups. Our waitress was great. She was very friendly, welcoming, and attentive. I was told the bathrooms were updated, so I made sure to make my way and see. The bathroom counters had granite and walls/floor had tile - it was open and airy. Two stalls and two sinks. Both our meals came with either soup, salad, or coleslaw. I got a coleslaw and was not impressed (I was not impressed last time either). I felt it did not have a lot of flavor but good portion size just the taste was not there. The menu is diverse with sandwiches, burgers, entrees, salads, and apps. I went with a special of shrimp, spinach, and pasta. Looking back I felt it was a little weird that I got pasta at a bar type restaurant? My husband also got a special of blackened chicken. I was very jealous of his meal and regret not getting it. His chicken was cooked nicely and good flavor. His meal came with rice pilaf and asparagus. Nice solid meal on a clean white plate. My meal was served in a larger bowl but the bowl had an outdated pattern around the rim - almost like my mother's dining ware? Using a white bowl would have helped with the presentation. My meal had a ton of red sauce which I did not mind. Decent amount of shrimp and two big slices of bread that were toasted/garlic. However, the spinach was raw and just sprinkled on top and did not add really any flavorful to the dish. I thought it would have been cooked and reduced. The pasta needed some punch of flavor like garlic or other spices. I would give my meal a 3 while my husband's a 5. I did like how they were piping the Red Wings game over loud speaker - good place to watch a game. Tons of TVs throughout as well. The interior is dark with heavy woods, blacks, and other dark colors. The outdoor area is something I would like to enjoy in the warmer months. read more

It was a typical cold winter day when we went last time. With that be said - do not sit in a booth. They have TVs at each booth which is nice. However when they added them they blew two holes in the wall which are not visible - one behind TV and one below the table. This was to pull cable I assume. Well they forgot to fill these holes up with insulation and cap them. The breeze that comes out of them is ridiculously cold in the winter and I am sure hot on the summer. Waitress said she knows about it and has told her manager as they get complaints a bunch. "They Justin won't fix it" she said. Owner want happy customers ? Owner want lower HVAC costs? I would come here again and recommend others to check it out as well. We stopped by this location yesterday afternoon during the Lions game to grab a bite and catch part of the game. It's seat yourself so we grabbed the un-taped off corner booth. We walked right past a server to get to the table. We sat there with no acknowledgement for 15 minutes before leaving. A couple of servers walked right past us to serve other tables. Nada for us. We saw one server was helping a table with a mask under her chin. And we observed that they were not social distancing at the bar. It was completely packed. I came here today after having driven by this place a few times in my day. I haven't really been inspired to come here before, and due to exhaustion and not wanting to go out of my way, I finally dragged myself in here to eat something after spending the day downtown. For starters, the place was packed on a Saturday afternoon at 3PM. I was like WTF is going on?!?! I was hoping for a quiet lunch, but that went out the window when I walked in. I forgot that it's March Madness and the MSU/UM game was on and everyone and their mother was here watching in their college sweatshirts. Anyways, the menu was so so, and I kind of mulled over what to get. Prices are all pretty much over $10 but they seem like solid meals. I ended up getting the Dos Tacos with French Onion Soup, and sat at the bar where I didn't have to wait for a table. The bartender was really nice and remained calm during all the game chaos with screaming all around her. I really enjoyed her waiting on me and made me feel a bit better despite the caos going on around me. I got my French Onion Soup first and it was pretty darn good. loved it. She then brought me out my two beef tacos with rice, and at first glance, I was like, wow this looks amazing! The tacos were awesome! Full of beef and all the fixings. I was pretty much full after that, and really was happy with the portion sizes, presentation and taste. Loved it! The rice? Eh, not my favorite. It looked great, but was bland and I only was able to eat barely half of it. Tastless, I was disappointed and had hoped for more. Oh well, at least the tacos were good? Overall, this place isn't bad, it's just not my scene. It's so crazy that I have never been in here before. This place has been around forever. My sister and I came in here before going to pick our son's up at the airport. It's very different than I expected. I was expecting something more modern because when you walk up, you see this amazing outdoor patio. It was 90 degrees so we chose to sit inside and of course I sat there shivering because restaurants seem to find it necessary to make their guests uncomfortable and freeze (I kid, I'm literally always cold in restaurants in the summer). But I digress. The inside was just...meh. Nothing really wow'd me too much. We found seats at the very crowded bar. Thankfully a few gentleman adjusted their seats to make room for us. I ordered A great salad. I think it was called the metamora or something similar. My sister is kind of a pain to dine with. She eats like a four year old. She's extremely picky. She also done not have a very refined palate. good beer to her is Michelob ultra. I have a hard time hanging out with her for this reason. I prefer breweries and cocktail bars. I don't think you'd call me a foodie but compared to her I am! She ordered basically a chicken and cheese taco. I think it was her version of their roll ups. They forgot to add the cheese. But corrected it promptly. She said the chicken was a bit on the dry side but I mean you ordered chicken and cheese what do you expect? My salad was fantastic. Our service was friendly and attentive.
