Superb black coffee. Very fresh and caffeinated. Stopped by to get some work done and this coffee brought me back to life. Great menu and cool vibes definitely worth the stop.

    Egg and Bacon Sandwich

Kind of sad because I loved Civil's breakfast, but like all corporate entities things always get worse. Their housemade to order breakfast items are now premade and refrigerated, AND more expensive for the decrease in quality. The bacon egg sammie used to be $12 and made to order. Now it's wrapped up cold premade and it's $15. Needless to say it wasn't as good. The previous sandwich used high quality dark yolk eggs, thick cut bacon, and a soft brioche bun. This one is the opposite, though the Kaiser roll wasn't that bad. This'll probably be my last time buying the food here, and I doubt I'll come here for the drinks as often.

Civil Coffee is in the middle of Fashion District in downtown LA, but not the part of downtown serviced by Metro rail but still walkable from 7th St / Metro Center (or you can transfer to the DASH E). I got the Liquid Gold (matcha + lavender syrup) slightly less sweetened, which was perfectly sweet. I only get matcha with almond or cashew milk if I can because I find dairy milk too overpowering, so it was really nice that the drink came with cashew-almond milk. The syrup was really good with both the matcha and the coffee (the Arroyo) but they were different experiences. The matcha taste was not as strong as the coffee, but the syrup was significantly more floral and noticeable in the matcha as a result. The drinks were large and it wasn't super expensive. There is SO much seating, really fast WiFi (I was on a Zoom for half the time I was there), AND outlets. What more can a girl ask for??

Inside is pretty small but it wasn't crowded. I got the vanilla oaty which was pretty good, I recommend. I also got the lemon loaf. My boyfriend got the salmon toast, which he enjoyed. He also got the matcha latte. If you like it sweeter, definitely ask for sweetener. It's the perfect sweetness.

I'm actually not too sure about Civil coffee and I'm going to go back a couple more times in the hopes of increasing my rating. The first time I went I tried one of their specialty coffees the vanilla oaty and it was just fine. As it's a specialty coffee, I didn't really have anything to compare it to so the next time I went in I ordered both a breakfast sandwich (EBC sammie) and a house chai latte. Now I love chai. What I don't love is watered down chai. And while i know ginger is essential in chai, this kind of just tasted off. Like the wellness shots you get from juice bars. The sandwich was good and despite the fact that I watched the guy handle bacon with his bare hands previously (I know it happens, watching it just gives me the ick) I decided to try it anyway and it was a really good sandwich. Wish I was coming here for just for the food but the coffee is supposed to be great too. So after drinking the chai, I realized that the specialty drink I had during my first visit might have been watered down too. Service was good and I like the atmosphere. Very clean aesthetic. I feel really bad about these 2 stars but I can't get over messing up my chai. Going to spend some more money here in the hopes of increasing the rating later, especially since the menu looks great and has some really good options.

    The Figueroa

Got the Figueroa, it was good, but I should've asked for light ice. I went around 2pm, and their service was fast.

Got a latte. The latte was 3 stars. The ratio of milk to espresso was off. There was so much more milk that I barely tasted the coffee. But they were very friendly and nice. The place looked clean and looked like a good place to sit and chat with friends so the extra star.

I've walked by here so many times on my way to and from Sonoratown. I finally stopped in on a Saturday morning. I was the only one there at 10:30, which sort of surprised me. But I got two lattes and a cappuccino to go. They all came out quickly and were great. The cafe itself is cute and I could see stopping in again to actually hang out for a bit.

One of my favorite coffee shops in Los Angeles. Real taste and always excellent customer service. Love how they are located all over Los Angeles! Also, the ambience so welcoming. 100% recommend!!!

On a cold blustery day, I walked into the warmth of Civil Coffee and was instantly happy. Their menu selections for both food and coffee were plentiful, plus tons of other refrigerated drinks. I was surprised to get to Civil Coffee on a weekday and not find it completely packed. There was some street construction detering visitors I think, but typically this is a great shop to study or remote work from. There were also some people having a team meeting so it works for that, too. Comfy seating in a variety option with some stool seats, some regular chairs and my personal go to - booths! Their internet was fast and worked perfectly. I came to Civil Coffee after having internet issues at a nearby coffee shop, so was very happy that I encountered no issues here. Staff was friendly and had my food & drink out to me quite quickly. Their cold brew was solid, drank that ish up! The breakfast burrito was divine! Packed with cheese, eggs and bacon, I was in morning foods heaven. The EBC was $9.50 and though not one of those humongous burritos, it was very filling and perfection for me. It's the little things: Their WiFi name is 'its a good day'! happy vibes!

Spensive like all coffee places these days. But a nice place to sit and enjoy an expensive latte and piece of banana bread. Good treat before or after walking around DTLA.

Matcha donut and drip (Mexican blend)

The shop was empty on a Thursday mid morning. Cashier was courteous and we were offered water when our drinks came out. The chai latte was weak - 1/5, pretty disappointing for being house made and not able to taste it. I should have asked for them to make it stronger, but they got busier once I realized. The matcha donut was really good - cornbread texture and not too sweet. My partner liked the Mexican blend drip coffee alright.

    Excellent apple galette.

The vibe: A snobby, emo, non-alcoholic, speakeasy. I loathe it so much, I love it! On offer: The menu is lovely and seems to be thoughtfully crafted. The drinks were delicious. They are shaken, not stirred. No, literally, the bareezstah shakes the drinks in a gold plated martini shaker. I was living for each elbow jerk! The food is also EXCELLENT. My dessert was flaky and tasted like a perfect blend of wealth and warmth. Decor: Chic and sophisticated with a soupçon of laissez faire. Customers: Artsy. Angsty. Indifferent. Poseurs. Conclusion: This place is where I belong. I'll be back. You should visit as well - especially when you feel like you need a respite from ordinary plebes and a reward for taking yourself very seriously.

Wi-Fi is available, though note that plugs and seating may be another issue. Not every spot comes with a plug, and it's going to be full, so you may need to wait 15-20 minutes. It is indeed a small spot, so if you're looking for a quiet spot to work, this might not be it. The interior decor, though, is quite clean aesthetically and is relaxing to work in. The Matcha Latte, though, let me say if you're in need of an afternoon pick-me-up, this will keep you energized, even without the sugar! I stumbled across their Yelp page when I was visiting from out of town and checked the Instagram for their hours on a Saturday afternoon and was happy to see they were open! I am a sucker for pop-up coffee shop/cart concepts so I had to check it out. The pop-up is easy to find, it's outside facing into the parking lot, and they had a cute A-frame sign out by the street side. There was no line, and I ordered and sat down at one of the tables out front. The service was so warm, and I believe the shop is owned and operated by one man on his own! He was an absolute delight to meet, and he brought my matcha latte to me at the table when it was prepared. He suggested I get the cream top on it, and boy was that the perfect recommendation. I would say I'm a little bit of a matcha fiend... I think I got a matcha latte at 3 different places this day... and this one far surpassed the others. I think it was one of the best matcha lattes I have ever drank to-date. It was perfectly green, the matcha quality was phenomenal, both taste and look-wise. The texture was just right, perfectly creamy with barely any grittiness. The cream top only added to the drink, and didn't take away from the matcha flavor at all, which I feel like has happened at other places for me. I'm dreaming of this matcha latte days later, and need to go back to Kokoro No Coffee as soon as I am in town again. This was a spectacular find, and I hope this spot gets all the love it deserves! There is truly nothing like a great business ran by a great person and you can tell there's so much intention put into this concept. Highly, highly recommend and I could not sing praises more!

The outdoor area feels like a balcony terrace combo with a small but lovely view of the LA skyline. We sat here and our doggo enjoyed a nap in the sun. It's a great spot to work, study, or catch up with friends without feeling cramped or rushed. The staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and friendly. Archives of Us reminds me of some of the restaurants and cafes you find inside the city areas of…read moreTokyo. Integrated within the city itself, but designed and curated to still be apart from it, Archives of Us feels like a space perfect for studying, working, and just vibing if you have the time and you're a local while as a tourist or passerby it's a neat stop by as you continue on your itinerary. Design - Private but Open Located just on the boundary of Chinatown and inside the new shopping plaza under new apartments, Archives of Us has its own separate entrance utilizing an elevator to get you to the second floor. This simple detachment allows Archives of Us to have a private space in such a public location. The interior has exposed concrete, ventilation ducts, and wiring to give the industrial design that's currently popular whilst integrating soft tones of wood, stones, and simple plants in the same space. It makes the interior feel less brutalist by incorporating nature where it can. In juxtaposition, the exterior is a large balcony space with planters of leafy plants on the perimeter to provide semi-private screening as you look out into the city. Though you're close enough to people's apartments where you can snoop on what they have on their balconies it provides enough privacy where they can't look at the TikTok's you're watching. Drinks - Matcha & Espresso Archives of Us has a reputation for its matcha. Like so many places these days they proudly utilize ceremonial matcha for their drinks (although ceremonial grade doesn't mean it's good for lattes but that's a whole different story for a different time). They also do Einspänners, cream lattes, and more traditional drinks like flat whites. All these come in one size, ensuring a consistent taste for each drink. Although I did enjoy the banana tiramisu cream latte I had I don't know if paying an average of $7.50-$9.00 is worth the price. The quality of the ingredients can be tasted so it's up to you to decide if that price is worth paying. Food - High Quality for Simple Design Following the same rhetoric as the drinks, the food they serve here aren't complicated but they do have a high standard to their ingredients. The Wagyu Egg Sliders is executed well with toasted Hawaiian rolls, perfectly cooked Wagyu beef patties, and a hand chopped egg salad between them all. The egg salad part especially feels like the same type of flavor you would get if you got an egg sando in Japan. The ingredients taste great and as a simple recipe it is executed well. However, for the price of $17 you might be looking for more than "simple done perfectly". If you're looking for a kick or accent to their food you'll have to look for outside sources. I recommend asking them for condiments like their salsa they use for their breakfast burritos. Their breakfast burrito also falls under the same umbrella of well executed with simple ingredients. I especially loved how fluffy the eggs were and the ratio of potato to all the ingredients was fantastic. Final Thought Archives of Us can be seen as a hip location you have to try because of all the buzz and hype you've heard of or it can be seen as a place to make your own if you're a local of the area. It can be considered both overly hyped and a well loved secret. Whatever perspective you see it as what is unarguable is Archives of Us is quintessentially LA and you can love it or hate it for it. Try it for yourself to see where you stand.
