If you are, or have ever been a student in Cardiff, there's about a 60% chance I'm preaching to the choir here. City Pizza is THE staple food of the unwashed, educational masses for the city. It's cheap, delicious and delivered at all hours of the day, making it every bit as vital to the student experience as Strongbow and Pro-Plus.
Being a bit of a pizza connoisseur, I feel confident in saying that City Pizza is easily the best pizza place in the city. Whilst perhaps not as classy as walking up Crwys Road in your finest attire and ordering a delicious, stone-baked pizza from Lorenza's restaurant, and certainly not as stomach-bendingly massive as a blast off from Rocket Joe's, City Pizza beats both of these and everywhere else in terms of pure flavour. Their stuffed crust meat feast pizza is the kind of thing that makes New Yorkers weep in benediction, having found their God.
What's more is the staff are wonderful. Other pizza places treat the job as just that; a job. But you walk into City Pizza and you find an array of fat and happy men who are eternally welcoming to the stumbling 3am hordes that attack their store. After one such night out almost three years ago, I struck up a conversation with the owner regarding spicy peppers, asking him for the hottest he had in stock. After trying it and subsequently embarrassing myself by almost hacking up my lungs in delicious pain, the owner clapped me on the back and called me a hero. To this day, after moving house three times, he still remembers me, and even when I just call up asking for a delivery, he asks me how I am and often slips an extra spicy sauce he has concocted into my order.
In short, City Pizza is simply the best pizza experience in the city. And it is an experience. High praise for a small take-away place, I admit. But try it for yourself and find out. read more
