I rarely buy fish and chips, but when I do I want them to be good ones, minus any sogginess and with crisp, fresh fish batter. Albany Fish Bar has built up a very good reputation for serving decent fish and chips, probably because they focus on what they're good at and don't try to branch out into too many other types of food. That said, you can still get other chip shop fare such as pies. The portion sizes are generous; the place seems clean and tidy; and they're open both at lunchtime (except on Sundays) and for supper, right up until midnight.

Easily the best fish and chip shop in the Roath area. Every thing about this fish and chip shop is top quality and the service is always quick due to the large number of employees shovelling chips. A large portion of chips is easily can fill two people. This place is always busy and that means fresh chips that are well cooked. The busy times are from 6pm but you still won't be left waiting more than ten minutes. If you want to try another fish and chip shop that is equally great look to Crwys road and Shah's.

I had been told by someone that Albany Fish Bar is the place to go if you are looking for real fish and chips (obviously substitute a veggie burger/equivalent and chips for me). They were well aware of my hatred of places that try to sell, say, kebabs and chips. Or chinese food and chips. All that happens is that they end up messing up both things. Albany Fish Bar, though, definitely delivered to me on every level. The food itself was heavenly - too heavenly really considering holiday season is coming up and I should probably start eating a little bit healthier. The prices were excellent. The staff were great too, joking away and generally enjoying themselves. I would recommend this place to anyone, especially people disappointed by the frankly rubbish Chippy Lane.

Horrible experience here. The staff are very rude and insulting. Also very unsanitary conditions. Food was OK, but would never go back.

Good chip shop. Not as good as it once was or maybe that's because I ate too much of them.

It has been going for years, and has managed to hold on to its fine reputation for decent quality and value for money throughout that time. It IS rather tiny, however, so it's possible you could easily walk past and miss it - but once you've been there once for food, you'll be a complete convert. Basically, they do American fast food - mainly burgers. It's not healthy, and it's not complicated, but what they do they do very well. The belly-busting All American 1/2 pound burger with fries and a tub of blue cheese sauce seems to go down well with meat-eaters, while there's a generously proportioned veggie option for people like me who don't eat beef. They also do chicken and pizza, but to be honest if you go to Uncle Sam's it should be for a burger, because that's what they do best. Excellent value for money!

The restaurant is tiny and like other reviews have said it so easy to miss, so its beggars belief how such a small place can churn out such big and hearty portions of food. The price is ok but that is completely offset by taste of the food, as the juicy and flavourful chicken engulfs your taste buds. Of course chicken is not for everyone and they do have plenty of other dishes on the menu such as huge burgers (which have appeared to been given a real shout in other reviews) and pizza but honestly I personally think Uncle Sam's rules the roost!

One word: Poppadoms…read more Not what you would expect from a chinese restaurant, but amazing poppadoms. The best poppadoms I've ever had anyway. I think it may be testament to the quality and cleanliness of the oil in their fryer. But really good poppadoms. And, here's the best bit, they're free! I know! Free poppadoms! Unfortunately only if you spend over £10, but then who manages to order a chinese meal without it being that much. Now, this is a traditional British Chinese takeaway. You know, the really heavy, gloopy, greasy, salty loveliness that is a good Friday night chinese takeaway. The sort you eat til you burst. And bursting is a real possibility when you see the portion sizes! I always try and fool myself and say that I'll just get Singapore Noodles, cos its smaller than a meal and separate noodles. And then it arrives (they deliver) in a double size container! Although I like to 'forget' this the next time. The prawn toasts are amazing as well. Whole slices of white bread, deep fried and really good and hot prawny filling. Mmmmmm. If you want a feed, you want it delivered and you don't want to move afterwards (and a partial to left over chinese for breakfast, look em up and give em a call. Oh, did I mention the poppadoms?

I eat way more than I should do and it still feeds me for two days, even when I only order two dishes. The noodles are some of the best I've ever had, the chips are great, the meat is always tender, and if you order over £10 or £20, you get free poppadoms or prawn crackers respectively. Their menu is huge and they have a wide variety of vegetarian meals. They're also great with fussy eaters, happy to take out any ingredients you don't, or can't eat. They deliver to nearly everywhere in Cardiff and I've never waited more than 45 minutes for an order. And their food comes in those nice plastic tubs rather than tin trays, keeping it nice and warm while you're eating, and ideal for putting in the fridge to eat the next day.

Well, sorry to disappoint... but it's a blue and red, plastic-fantastic fast food joint on St Mary Street in the city centre! I don't think I've ever seen anything look quite so different from the name it carries as this place! But, it's an international chain with outlets in London, Paris and NYC and so they must be getting something right! They've got nineteen outlets in London alone. According to Naeem, who works at the St Mary Street, Cardiff branch, the biggest seller is, (somewhat unsurprisingly), the deep fried chicken... so I guess that people tend to think that this is their fotre.

Well Damn you Sherlock because I wish I never bothered. It cost me about a fiver for some spicy wings, a couple of chicken strips (or something like that), chips and a medium drink. The wings were good, but there were only two of them. The chicken strips were really greasy and tasted of nothing in particular. The chips were horrible. My Fanta was alright though! Definitely drunk food though. I won't be going there again, and it was only late night hunger and the fact Chicken Cottage is 2 minutes away that drove me to it. Next time I'll walk the little bit further to Chip Alley.

It was lovely and bright and good atmosphere. Really charming. I ordered the Mexican burger and my gf ordered a build your own breakfast. Food arrived quite quick and lovely staff as usual. The breakfast: Sausage was good, bacon was a bit salty but average really. Mushrooms were delicious and black pudding was good. Mexican Burger: When the menu said it came with salad and chips I thought it meant a side salad. However the salad was in the burger. Not a problem but wasn't expecting cucumber in my burger. Picking up the burger the cucumber and tomatoes slipped right out the bottom. The bottom was wet. I left the salad out and tried again but the burger was just slipping around from wetness and sauce I guess. I ended up using knife and fork and the taste was actually very nice. The Mexican sauce has a little kick. The burger was cooked well with a good taste. Was a thick burger too not some thin cheap rubbish. Shame the bottom bun had gotten wet and soggy. But overall enjoyed the actual taste. The chips that came with the burger were just your average cafe chips. Nothing to write home about. The price for the food was really good though. And the staff are always really happy and welcoming, with the outside being so bright and lovely.

I really wish I had because I hated that job and I really enjoy a big breakfast. I like the attitude of Ramon's, they do good wholesome food at low prices and don't mess about with it. Neither do they miss a trick; they offer you to bring your own alcohol to dinner (increasingly popular these days) so your costs are kept as low as possible. Okay, so it's not fine dining, but for breakfasts and lunches it doesn't come much better than this for price. The credit crunch meal shows the owners are all too aware of the times and are doing their bit to help out. It can get very busy in the morning and I've seen people unable to get a seat; my guess is they went elsewhere and had to pay a lot more.
