It's one…read moreof those comfort foods I don't eat often because it's so rich--but when I see it on a menu, it absolutely catches my attention. That's exactly what drew me to The Southern Pecan in SouthPark. Here in the South, they call it country fried steak, and I'm happy to report this one did not disappoint. I met a colleague there for lunch, and everything about the experience felt easy from the start. The restaurant is located in Phillips Place, a lovely little shopping area that feels a bit polished and upscale--with shops like Orvis, Tory Burch, and even a Restoration Hardware restaurant nearby. They do offer valet parking, which is a nice touch, though honestly parking is easy enough on your own. We had reservations through OpenTable and were seated on the patio, which was absolutely delightful for this time of year in Charlotte. The weather was perfect, the setting was relaxed, and the service started off warm and welcoming right away. Now, the food. The country fried steak was beautifully cooked--crispy on the outside, tender inside, and served with creamy mashed potatoes and gravy that hit all the nostalgic notes from my Texas upbringing. I paired it with a vegetable side (I believe it was broccoli or corn), and it was a classic Southern plate done right. We also enjoyed a couple of cocktails, and to finish, we split a praline bread pudding, which felt like the perfect Southern ending to the meal--sweet, comforting, and indulgent without being overwhelming. The staff was friendly and attentive, and one of the things I continue to appreciate about Charlotte is how easy it is to connect with people. We even chatted with diners at nearby tables, which added to that welcoming, community feel that makes dining out here so enjoyable--especially for someone coming from the Bay Area. Prices felt fair for the quality, the setting, and the portion sizes, and overall the experience left a great impression. Bottom line: If you're craving a solid Southern classic like country fried steak--or just want a relaxed patio lunch in a charming part of SouthPark--The Southern Pecan is definitely worth a visit. And as someone happily eating my way through Charlotte and the Southeast, this stop was another reminder that the journey has been a delicious one.

I've heard rave reviews about this place so Michelle & I went for Sunday Brunch…read more They recommended a reservation so we had one @ 12n. It was already quite busy when we arrived and it's not clear where your parking options are. People are pulling up to the entrance and dropping people off so it gets jammed up and chaotic, of course people are running late so those BIG Yukons and Suburbans are making it a challenge to navigate a small entrance area. You would THINK they would at least have a Valet option of Sat/Sun during Brunch. To park, go BEHIND the restaurant on the street to the left and you'll see some free parking options that are close and walkable. We asked for a table on the patio and were immediately seated. The bar was already buzzing with solo diners enjoying their Mimosas. The patio is NOT that big, a little over crowded and table are very close with not much space in between. There was a LARGE group of 'FUN' ladies right beside us enjoying their MIMOSAS, dropping the 'F' bomb from time to time and making a LOT of noise. What can you do? Nothing but try to make the best of it and just start talking LOUDER like everyone else. The OVERHEAD heaters were way too intense so the Staff was very responsive at our request to turn down the heat. We shared the BBQ Shrimp Starter which was SO good, I highly recommend. I had the Gumbo and Michelle had the beet and goat cheese salad. We both had the Red Fish which comes with smashed potatoes and broccoli. The potatoes were so BLAND, the broccoli had NO seasoning. The Red Fish wasn't that great of a flavor and not very tender, not easy to cut, had to use my knife at times to get a bite. Kinda disappointed, I lived in N Orleans for a couple of years and it was always so good there. The biggest disappointment was the Gumbo. It had all the right ingredients but the ROUX was to strong, dark and heavy. It actually gave me indigestion afterwards. The service was OUTSTANDING. Our Server was Daylean, she was so nice and helpful with the menu and kept our refills coming.

My wife and my SIL both ordered the avocado toast and added a sunny side egg. It was weird because usually they would put the egg on top, but they buried the egg under the greens. Both eggs were completely cold and the yolks congealed. Weirdly ice cold, like they came out of the fridge. I ordered the Gary's BBQ sandwich which is the most expensive sandwich in the menu. It is supposed to be pulled pork, BBQ sauce, Mac and cheese and onion frizzles. Well there were no onion frizzles and while there was BBQ sauce, there was virtually no on pork. Literally 1/2 a teaspoon on the sandwich. A tiny shred here or there. It was just a grilled cheese with macaroni between the very good sourdough bread. Also, mediocre frozen French fries. None of us will return.

The menu leans Latin-American with some Southern influence, and you can tell there's real intention behind the food--not just trendy plating. A few dishes that really stand out: * CrispyPan Seared Chicken - super clean execution, great char, and balanced with bright, fresh flavors. It's simple but done right. * Fried Beef Tacos - easily a must-order. Crispy, rich, and layered with acidity so it doesn't feel heavy. * Ceviche - fresh, citrusy, and well-seasoned. You can tell they're not cutting corners here. * Street Corn (Elote) - bold, messy, and exactly what you want it to be. * Gator Bites - crispy on the outside, tender inside, and packed with flavor. Fun dish that's actually executed well--not just a gimmick. The atmosphere is just as strong as the food--high energy, great patio, and a space that feels alive without being overwhelming. It's the kind of place you can take a team, a date, or just roll in after work and still feel like you made the right call. Service is typically on point too--friendly, quick, and they keep things moving even when it's busy, which matters. Only thing that throws people off sometimes is parking, but don't let that stop you: There is parking behind the restaurant if the main lot is full. Overall, this is one of those spots that hits consistently--good food, strong execution, and a vibe that keeps people coming back.

We ordered a couple of items, including mocktails, and while the food and drinks were just OK and didn't quite stand out compared to other spots, the service more than made up for it--the staff was friendly, attentive, and made the experience enjoyable.  Overall, it's a great place to hang out if you're looking for a lively vibe and excellent service, even if the menu isn't the main highlight.

Tucked into a retail plaza on Shopton Road, flanked by a dental office and a Goodwill, OneSixty feels like it has been airlifted in from a more polished part of town. The interior is sleek and inviting, with a lounge-like ambiance that sets the tone for elevated dining without the pretense. Mrs. K. and I arrived early, around 6pm, and were greeted with warm, attentive service that never felt rushed or performative. Her shrimp skewers were beautifully grilled and generously portioned, and she graciously let me sample one--delicious, with a subtle char and well-balanced seasoning. My Buffalo wings were meaty, spicy without being overwhelming, and served piping hot, which is exactly how wings should be. What stood out even more was the bartender's easygoing approach to crafting a non-alcoholic cocktail. No raised eyebrows, no shortcuts--just a genuinely pleasant drink that felt as considered as any mixologist's signature. It is a small gesture, but one that speaks volumes about the restaurant's inclusive hospitality. And speaking of small gestures, do not miss the whimsical signage on the restrooms. It is a playful touch that adds personality to a place already brimming with charm. OneSixty might be geographically distant from Charlotte's nightlife hubs like South End or NoDa, but it is carving out its own identity in Steele Creek with style and substance. Whether you are a local looking for a refined night out or a visitor curious about one of Charlotte's quieter corners, this spot is worth the detour. I had seen multiple social media ads about Romeo's Vegan Burgers so last night, Saturday around dusk and on my way home, I decided to stop in. There were about 3 diners inside and the only visible attendant was serving a drive-thru customer. The attendant didn't acknowledge me standing at the counter with any distinct greeting. Not expecting any immediate service, I stepped away to go wash my hands at the restroom. Restroom cleanliness sometimes is an indicator and I'd give this one a C minus. Dirty toilet, lukewarm faucet water, odor. Perhaps this made me wary however I decided to try the food. The attendant was unoccupied when I returned to the counter and did apologize for me having to wait earlier at my arrival. I ordered a simple black bean burger, tater tops and a lemonade. I noticed on the menu board that there was an additional fee to "upgrade" to an "all plant patty" that just seems odd at a vegan restaurant. The meal took about 15 minutes or so to prepare. Honestly, at the end of this meal there wasn't a stand-out moment for a vegan burger meal at the price of $21.00. I've prepared the same meal at my home for less. The lemonade is basic and perhaps processed, noticeably not "fresh". I read the other reviews before submitting mine. I suppose time of day, staff on hand and other factors influence the experience. My visit fell short of satisfying my expectations. Best of luck to this restaurateur and happy holidays.
