Nice free old style tram service around Melbourne. Runs only during the daytime. Get a history of the city audio description while riding. Be aware that air conditioning on the old trams is not optimal on hot days.

This sign indicates it's a stop for the city circle tram.

The city circle tram is a free service that runs a loop around the CBD and detours to the Docklands. It has recordings about various sights along the way, and sometimes a staff member on board to help out. It's a handy way for visitors to see and learn a little more Melbourne. Or for Melbournians with a little extra time on their hands and a little less money on their Myki card. The City Circle Tram is not the most reliable form of transport around the city - it's advertised as coming every 12 minutes, but that seems to be a vague estimate. As you might see trams arriving one after the other, or find yourself waiting for 25+ minutes. Sometimes the recordings on the tram aren't working either. But if you are really really lucky you could end up with a staff member giving their own personal commentary on the city :) Also, they are advertised as running until 6pm Sunday-Wednesday and until 9pm Thursday-Saturday. But the trams start their last loop and don't accept passengers prior to the end times. So unaware riders run the risk of finding themselves stranded in the docklands at the end of the evening. Overall the City Circle Tram is a nice, if crowded, free service in a city that is notoriously expensive. Hop on a Melbourne icon and maybe learn a thing or two along the way.

A great benefit of a world city like Melbourne is its public transport. The best of which has to be the free City Circle Tram 35. It travels in a loop around the edge of the Melbourne CBD (a rectangular grid), clock-wise and anti-clockwise. Each stop has audio commentary, and is a nice way of learning about Melbourne's history, as well as things to see and do; if you are a first time visitor. It can get very packed, so be prepared to be in close proximity to total strangers, and practically sharing bodily fluids... especially on a hot summer's day, which can be a bit unbearable. The great thing is though, you can just get off, and explore the city, cool off.. and hop back on again, whenever you need to see the next attraction on your list. Its free! So, nothing to complain about :)

The city circle tram is like... being given a really good massage by Steve Erkle. Yeah, it's great and all. But it's a bit uncomfortable, and you really wish it'd just shut the hell up and let you finish in peace. Constantly ricketing from side to side while it tells you about the school of culinary training you're just passing on your right, it's not the best ride in town. Still, if you want to cross the city without paying any money, walking, or dodging the occasional met officer, this is the way.

Who doesn't love a free tram ride? Based on number of people squashed onto the City Circle Tram I just jumped off, the answer is clearly no one. Expect to see the next tram about 12 minutes after the last. They run in both directions between 10am and 6pm Sunday to Wednesday and 10am - 9pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Yes. Seven days a week, rain, hail or shine. Melbournians and tourists alike take advantage of the City Circle Tram. Jump on jump off, ride the entire loop which takes a little over an hour. See Melbourne's CBD from the streets. Rattle past Flinders Street Station and Federation Square, Parliament and Princess Theatre. Cruise past Carlton Gardens, the State Library of Victoria and Melbourne Central. Then head down to the new Docklands precinct before heading back and doing it all again. It may take longer then jumping on the City loop train, but if watching a city go about its business is something you enjoy then the trams of Melbourne are probably more your speed. The route is designed to take in Melbourne's tourist hotspots. As a local you may find a place you haven't yet explored. Result. Or you may just want to get to your next appointment free of charge. Done. The tram gets crowded at times, but its worth braving squashed seating and standing room only for the tourist info onboard and the friendly tram driver, who can answer your questions, but please wait until the tram has stopped!

Look out for tram route 35, and your aboard Melbourne's free City Circle Tram. This is a free tram service that covers the city loop and runs every 12 minutes. Step on an old historic tram anytime between the hours of 10am-6pm Sunday to Wednesday, and anytime between 10am-9pm Thursday to Saturday. The service starts at Flinders Street, and then goes to the Harbour Esplanade; Docklands Drive riding through to La Trobe Street in the City; to Victoria, Nicholson and Spring Streets back to Flinders Street. The only challenge is that despite the time frequency of services, the trams can get crowded quite quickly; especially on weekends. Melbourne's Crown Casino funds part of this service through the tax they need to pay on their patrons losing bets which is circulated back to the community to enjoy, and hence why this service is free; although the operator is still Yarra Trams. It is a great way to access the city loop, and yet is clearly affordable as well. Credit goes to this tram service in making Melbourne one of the world's most livable cities. Having used this service, one can say with confidence that this service is quite reliable. You would be extremely lucky to get a seat. The route is designed to be near many of Melbourne's tourist hot spots in tandem with great local hang out spots for those of us who live in this great city.

I gave it a 5 because it is free but I don't like the overcrowded stops. And now with the free tram zone there is no need for that

During my recent visit to Melbourne, members of our group lived this local phrase: "I'll meet you…read moreunder the clocks". We also walked under the station when walking to and from our Southbank Hotel to parts of the Central Business District.

(Visited 12/16/24 MO @ 11:00am): This railway station was a find along the street we were walking…read moredown! A friend and I were on Day 3 of our 12-Day Southern Australia Explorer cruise with Princess Cruises, we took the local train into town for some casual exploration, and after a stop at Federation Square, we proceeded to Flinders Street Railway Station. The station was named after renowned Capt. Matthew Flinders, a Royal Navy officer, navigator, and cartographer, who led the first inshore circumnavigation of mainland Australia then called New Holland, was also credited as the first person to to utilize the name "Australia" to describe the entirety of the continent. This was Australia's oldest train station, and with its prominent green copper dome, distinctive yellow facade, arched entrance, and clocks, it was one of Melbourne's most recognizable landmarks. The station was completed in 1910, and the upper floors were purpose-built to house a library, gym, and lecture hall, later used as a ballroom. Its 708-meter main platform was the fourth longest railway platform in the world. A noted heritage site, it was one of the busiest suburban railway stations in the Southern Hemisphere with over 1,500 trains and 110,000 commuters passing through each day. With all of these historical facts, were we impressed by this famously-named railway station!? PURCHASE We didn't spend any money here, but of course the main financial transactions were for ride fares. Because we didn't go inside, I couldn't say whether or not there were other opportunities to separate you from your money! SERVICE Again, we didn't venture inside, so I imagined there were staffers around, and hopefully, the trains ran on time (which I suspected they did) - 'nuff said. PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance) I wouldn't suspect any onsite parking simply because of the nature of this transit center. Most passengers and people would either be already on a train, had taken public transportation to this station, or simply walked. Otherwise, if you needed to park for whatever reason, there was a large onsite lot at nearby Federation Square at various rates ($8.00AUD - $64.00AUD) based on day, event, reason, and time. Additionally, there appeared to be a decent amount of parking on all surrounding streets (please note any posted signs) - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A large street corner ornate building https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=xBsRBjr9EhC3_GK3S0WzHg that was visible from blocks in either direction, based on pictures I've seen the interior was somewhat modern with all of the standard amenities afforded a train terminal. Tickets windows, train schedules, clocks, and paths that branched out in many directions to their respective platforms, this was a sight to see. Minimal natural lighting entered through the stained-glass windows and entrances, while numerous electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. I couldn't say whether or not there were any TVs or any background music except for the sounds of the trains and outside street traffic. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=mJaGBCG31dXRhgFWJjeBJA ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL There was such a charming historic feel about the Flinders Street Railway Station that I only appreciated from the outside having not looked in. I wished I hopped onto a train that took me through the station, but on this day it was crowded with people which was very unappealing to me. There were also interesting lore and stories (ghosts!?) to research for some good tales. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $0.00AUD / $0.00USD BEFORE any discounts/tip). And, although they accepted credit cards, not mine of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS
