My apologies this is a long post, but if you have a PERMANET FAULT CODE P0442 and FAILED Smog, you…read moremay want to read.... I originally came in with NO check engine light or battery issues. He tested my 2016 car with 130,000 miles and found a "Permanent Fault Code P0442 - Evap System Leak (small leak)." He said this caused my vehicle to fail the Smog Test. He did not charge me for the test which was gracious. This reinforces perhaps this is not being done intentionally. My mechanic fixed the car prior to the test. Due to a large number of people clearing their fault codes to pass smog, this regulation was added in 2019 where permanent fault codes (meaning no current issues but past) remains in your vehicle computer system until 15-specific drive cycles and 200 miles have been driven where the system checks the fault and then removes the code. If after completing the 15 drive cycles/200 miles, the permanent fault code remains, the Smog Machine should "ignore" the code and pass the vehicle. I am not mechanically inclined, but I had to learn about this to solve the issue. When my mechanic confirmed the car had 15 cycles and over 200 miles, he said I should be good to have it retested. I returned to Mom's and he scanned my car and said the permanent code remains and the car will fail. I literally "begged" him to smog my car adding I would pay if it failed. He refused. At the time, I thought you had to return to the same smog check company to have it retested. Since he refused, I had no choice but to try somewhere else. I took it to another test only site and it PASSED!!!! The Smog machine WILL indeed "ignore" the code if the drive cycles are done. There are so many cars with expired tags. I used to look down on their irresponsibility and now I wonder if they went to Mom's or similar and were told incorrect information and have been frantic like me driving all over town and up and down the freeway. Mom's needs to do more research on the Permanent Fault Codes and not be too proud to insist they are right at the expense of others. Wow what an amazing business owner. I came here because of the reviews and I'm so happy to report…read moreback that they are so well-deserved. It's nice to experience decency in this day and age where it sometimes feels like we experience corrupt practices. I came here a few months ago because I needed to pass smog and I thought my check engine light was just on for my shocks - which needed to be replaced. I was hoping that my car would either pass smog or that the owner would simply tell me to come back when I fixed whatever problems needed fixing, free of charge. I'm happy to report that the reviews are correct. This man was very decent and told me which codes I needed to fix, very clearly and did not charge me for checking my codes. I came back after making the necessary repairs - which cost a fortune. We really need to reconsider and ratify the California smog concept. It seems to hurt and affect those with the lowest amounts of money the most. However that is no fault of this business, us Californians voted this practice in at some point, but it's worth reconsidering. Few other states have these smog standards. Let's worry about big business and corporations before hurting our lowest-income citizens. But, I digress, I came back and he said that although I had replaced my catalytic converter that I would need to still drive the car for a longer period of time, about 80-100 miles and that I would need to try and go about 50-60mph to clear the code. He kindly gave me an old code reader to take on my drive so that I would know when I was cleared. That metaphorically felt like he was giving me the shirt off his back in being a team mate with me in helping to get my car ready to pass smog. Truly what a gem of a business owner. He had a sign that said, "Jesus loves you" in his shop and it was nice and beautiful to see such a beautiful representation of the love and care for others that the Bible teaches. Anyways, wonderful man and business. I will certainly only be taking my car to this smog check while I'm in Victorville. Hope y'all found something helpful. Sorry for rambling thru text, but we have to use any platforms we have for more good in this world. It matters. You matter.
