Circle thrift too Furniture, books, household items, more pricy / big items

I've been here consistently for 3 years (& counting) & it took me this long to write a review?!? So my review is based on my many years of experience shopping at Circle Thrift (CT). Get ready as this will be the most comprehensive review ever on my favorite store in Philly (& maybe all of America? maybe the entire world?). Times I've spent here At most: 2x / week Usually: weekly At least: biweekly CT standard not-on-sale $ (pricing system): Prices here are undefeatable! The cheapest you'll find anywhere! Frugal people gather around! Orange tags: $15 Any colored tags depend on the week: for the colors not on sale, unless otherwise specially marked: Men's Shirts: Short-sleeves: $3; Long-sleeves: $4 Tanks: $3 Bras: @@@@@ Underwear: (don't remember seeing boxers) Swimwear: 1-piece set: $4; 2-piece set: $2/ per piece T-shirt Top (Female): $3 Long-sleeve blouses/shirts: $4 Pants, Shorts: $4 Pants, Long: $5 Leggings: $4 Athletic Tops: $3 Athletic Pants: $4 Dresses: $7 Skirts: $4 Suits: $10 Blazers: $6 Trousers (Men): $10 Sweaters: $5 Ties: $1 Lounge/Sleepwear: $4 Sweatshirts: $5 Sweatpants: $4 Outerwear: $10 Kids clothing: $1 Shoes: as marked price Books in CT2: hardcovers: $2, softcovers: $1 Items in CT2: (ie furniture, large items, knickknacks) as marked price Items I've seen here: A whole range for different genders and age groups including newborns & children. Since CT is located in Fishtown, a hip neighborhood, the items that are donated here are usually purchased by people with modern/ good taste. I've also heard wealthy people donate newly bought items here for tax benefit/write-off purposes. I've seen anywhere from fast fashion items (H&M, SHEIN, Forever21, Walmart, etc.) to quality (anthropology, everlane, Banana Republic, J. Crew) to high-end (Brooks Brothers, Stuart Weissman) to luxury brands (though I don't think they authenticate items nor am I able to distinguish so buy at your own caution. But I saw brands like Fenty, LV, Gucci, Valentino, etc.) Any items you'd think they'd have, they'll have albeit not in store all the time but if the timing and coincidence are right, it'll be there. & any item you don't think you'll need, but you buy to need, you'll find here. From lingerie to undergarments, to cookware & dish-ware & utensils & appliances, to electronics, to footwear of all kinds including ice skating boots, to clothing of all kinds including coats and scrubs, even wedding dresses, to socks and hats, to newborn & baby onesies/ footsies, baby accessories like hats & shoes & bibs & toys, to seasonal decors & gift bags/ cards, to the arts & crafts corner with yarn, to linens, bedding & cushions, to suitcases & personal bags of all kinds (book bags, duffles, female bags), to garden pots, to PJs, Pros about this store: Discount/ sale system: & explanation of their turnover rates: Weekly items discount for 50¢ for that week's color (of items less/ = $10) or 1/2 off (no limit) for that week's second color. Weekly discounts begin on Wednesdays. Items have fast turnover rates in the store (unlike Goodwill which is why Goodwill seems like digging through trash) + affordable pricing system + discount system = there's always treasures to be found. If an item is without its color price tag, it will automatically be CT's regular price. To describe it; Small selection but fast turnovers, so it's best to go often as there are new items every day. Staffing: The people here are so friendly! I've always seen Ivan here & he brightens our day! Scotty is a ray of sunshine in CT2. The only cons/downsides: No bathroom for public use... due to privilege being abused by druggies... *sigh*, but they're not unreasonable about it if you're pregnant. I'd go to Riverwards Produce Market grocery store or Cake And Joe bakery for a close bathroom (see Google map picture). No haggling. Strict about this one even if the condition of the item is not as good. Sometimes during holidays (ie this year, during Thanksgiving week, they were open for 2 days), their colored discount rotation is unchanged (ie instead of a weekly rotation, it's extended by another week, totaling 2 weeks). The physical store itself is a lil' rundown (ceiling not completely intact) but that doesn't stop CT from being loved by regulars! I believe it's because they focus on donating their earnings to charity. Talk about a humble hero! They also love bag donations in addition to regular donations. Store gets slightly hot at times. To remove the crayoned-colored prices after your purchase, just simply use alcohol-based hand sanitizer/ wipes. It'll remove from most surfaces except wood with a certain finish, but CT is mindful of not using crayons but a sticker take instead... so not a prob! Edit 2024: They are in the process of new store ownership, which got rid of student and elderly discounts. I truly hope they keep their 50¢ weekly deals and current color discount system.

They have a large selection of books compared to most other thrift stores (accept Philly AIDS thrift, which is book heaven).

With the pandemic, I don't know if this event runs any more…read more My friend V. loves thrift shops and what she calls 'treasure hunting.' Having grown up poor and being forced to wear way too big, tooth achingly ugly winter coats from Goodwill that I'd 'grow into,' hideous polyester button down shirts that a pimp wouldn't touch, scratchy, pill-y wool sweaters reeking of camphor, high water generic blue jeans and summer shorts I would not put on a dog in a clown show, I assiduously avoid things like this. V. was insistent that I would 'go wild' over this flea market because 'it won't be like anything else you've ever been to!!!' I had my doubts about that but you make concessions for friends. We paid our $3 entrance fee and strolled around. Most of the vendor tables had things that were of no interest to me; old playing cards, glassware that was (presumably) collectible, vintage tattoo flash, old silver plate and older, tarnished sterling silver tableware, racks of *shudder* vintage clothing and shoes, most of which had seen better days. There were some well curated tables of antique jewelry and antique beaded bags at very non-bargain prices and a few tables of what I can only call culled pieces from cabinets of curiosities-moth eaten taxidermied items and non-p.c. tourist trash. For the most part, the vendors we encountered were bored seeming or down right rude. The people watching was far better than anything for sale. After 2 hours here, V. bought a very large, ornate dusty rose colored tassel. I asked what she planned to do with it. Her response? 'Do you want it, Warren?' Uhh-that would be NO. I bought nothing. V. wanted to take another spin around the place so I opted to go out to her car to sit and read, telling her to take her time. Another 2 hours passed. She returned empty handed, other than the tassel, to the car. Would I go back? Nope. Should you go if the flea market opens again? It's $3 and maybe an hour or 2 out of your life. You could spend that time and money in worse ways.

They pull all the vintage items out of their donations and send them here to be up-charged to high heaven even though they acquired all the items for free! Ever wonder why you can't find affordable nice vintage pieces while at Goodwill anymore? It is because they were all sent here! They used to hide the fact that they were a Goodwill store super well, but recently I noticed that their POS system had the Goodwill logo, and when I asked the staff member about it she confirmed exactly what I'm saying. There are many other vintage stores that are curated and sourced all over the city. Keep in mind this is nothing more than Goodwill. Literally it's a Goodwill store that they send their potentially more valuable items out too. Everything is always overpriced and I've certainly gotten used to that. I've also had numerous incidents like buying a record that was in the window display and being told. I had to pick it up a month later only to come back to get it and be told they had sold it to someone else, but they refused to give my money back and I had to accept store credit. But I went in today and they literally have a security guard working in the front door and like, I'm done. It's just a wholly unnecessary situation and it makes me feel uncomfortable. We especially don't need a white guy in a security uniform in a city that is more than half black and brown people , it's a freaking Goodwill for fuck's sake. Security guard at Goodwill. No thanks, I'm done.
