Elk River Books apparently fancy themselves as not only being a bookstore, but also amateur internet sleuths. Unfortunately, they're not very good at it. This book was being sold as "one per order". Somewhere along the way, Elk River Books decided to change that to "one per family name". They cancelled my order and sent me an email stating that it appeared I was attempting to get around their "one per household" (they can't seem to make up their mind how many to sell) rule by ordering under my husband's name and having the book delivered to a neighboring home, whom Elk River also stated "per an internet search, the Kulinski's live there". As I stated, Elk River Books should stick to selling books because their detective skills SUCK. Even after I responded to their email informing them that our ADULT son, who shares my husband's name. RENTS the house next door from the Canadian family that owns it, they have not bothered to apologize to me or reinstate my order. Both myself and my son are HUGE fans of Kamala Harris. Now, thanks to the overinflated egos of Elk River Books, one of us will not be getting a signed book. I cannot recommend enough that you find another bookstore to patronize. This was complete overreach and absolute petty BS on the part of Elk River Books.

And one of the woman that worked there and I had a great time chatting since we'd both been cartographers in our early lives, both had used hand cranked cash registers and had both lived in the Denver area, a few years even at the same time! In advance of my trip, I located a music store in Livingston - Conley's, and sent them an email to see if it would be possible to rent a guitar until the end of September (likely how long I will be here). I received a response and they were indeed able to meet my rental requirements (particular type of pick, capo). I need to keep my calluses solid or I'll be rebuilding them when I finally get back home to CA! I was unable to make the original pickup on Sunday night, and the store is closed on Mondays. Despite this, the Conley family were in the store regardless and told me to swing by on Monday for pickup, as Mr. Conley would be traveling on Tuesday. When I arrived, the Conley's were warm and inviting. Ended up chatting and found out I'm here from the Bay Area and he would be traveling nearby. He enlightened me with his history of gigging in the Bay Area in the 70s, and it was just an authentically interesting and fun conversation. I told Mr. Conley I had been unable to explore Montana, and he suggested if I am still here when he returns, he would be happy to show me around! They are simply genuinely nice people, provided all my equipment at an amazing flat rate of $100, and were more accommodating than a dirty Californian would have expected out here! (Just kidding!) If you can, support the Conley's Music and Book store. They are wonderful and I'm so happy I was able to locate them. Now I just need to remember to return the guitar Thank you!!!!

When we visited this place (it's near the mall well between the mall and the movie theater), it was Thanksgiving time so a lot of the items for sale were leaning Christmas. They have a lot of other items besides books like legos, toys, crafts, etc. They also had a coffee shop and seating which is what I love about bookstores. When I was still going to school, I would just hole up at a table with my laptop and work, buy a drink, and just go. This time around, I didn't buy anything and just perused. It's sometimes just nice to walk up and down the aisles and look at what books are available or just play around with the toys. Isle of Books (also Used Book Emporium) moved to this new location. I was never at the old…read morelocation, so I can't compare, but this shop has used books in every genre imaginable and even a few that aren't for all ages. I'm sure there's a logic to how it is set up, the sections are marked, but I still had a hard time figuring out the order. For me that's okay because I enjoy the browsing. The store was busy, with people dropping off and picking up books, including those picking up online orders. For those looking for something, the employees went out of their way to assist. There are a couple of chairs available for those who like to sit and read before they buy. Near the counter are hardcover books, old books, that always look great with an old-school library vibe, but stacked on shelves to the ceiling that made it difficult to see. I noticed a few school-subject books from the early 1900s that were an eye-opening adventure. The check-out process can be a small challenge if you're in a hurry and picked up a book that isn't marked with the price. Because Isle of Books also has a strong internet sales business, the manager may check the online price and then discount from that because the purchase is in-person, and they save on shipping. Books are scanned and entered into the computer system, but with the sheer number of books, things can be missed. In any case, I came away with a couple of old hardcover books that have been a fun and challenging read. Language and the readability of it have evolved in the last fifty-to-a hundred years. My least favorite part of this shop is the parking outside the building. There are only a few spots and one entrance to it so it can be frustrating and challenging to enter/exit and particularly in the winter as you snow mounts. Parking on the street is probably a better option. In any case, it's an incredibly fun store.
