courtesy movie tickets were given out because the movie screen stopped working
    Mike T.

Came here to see the new Deadpool & Wolverine movie on a discount Tuesday at Cineplex. The place was packed with people to see the movie but it was orderly. I actually lost my physical movie ticket after I bought in person earlier that day but the nice staff person was able to quickly reprint my ticket. I was able to get inside without any problems with my ticket reprint. (Phew!) Unfortunately, as the pre-movie trailers were playing, the screen went dark and the sound stopped working. The screen never worked again. A minute later, a staff lady came out and made an announcement that everyone would be given a courtesy movie ticket OR a full refund. In addition, you could wait and see if the staff would be able to fix it OR watch the same movie starting a few minutes later in another theater room even after getting a courtesy ticket. She stuck around a little bit to answer audience questions and repeated the announcement about the situation. The entire audience in the movie theater got up, left, and queued up for the ticket or refund. Kudos to the audience that day for keeping it orderly as a huge crowd quickly queued at the box office. The manager gave each person a courtesy ticket. Courtesy tickets never expire, they can be used for any movie, and they can only be redeemed in-person at the cashier. The manager apologized to the customers and tried his best to accommodate people who wanted to use their tickets right away for a future movie. He was the only one issuing the ticket so the queue moved pretty slowly. After about 15 minutes in the queue, my friend and I got our courtesy tickets and left Cineplex metrotown for the day. I didn't stick around to find out if the staff ever fixed the technical glitch. I've personally been to well over 100 of movie screenings at Cineplex theaters around Vancouver the last 10 years and this is the first time this ever happened to me. So technical glitches are really rare. In my opinion, the staff did a good job handling the situation when a technical problem occurs. I think the staff lady did a good job giving out instructions and announcing the situation. Maybe they could have two people on hand to help the manager give out the courtesy tickets so the queue would move faster in the future. Still, it would have been nice if technical glitches weren't a thing at all here. 3 out of 5 stars based for this visit.

This has been more than a year or so since I last went to a movie theater. Well covid. Now that cinemas are opened again, I decided to go for a morning show hoping it will not be busy. I have movie tickets which I bought via work bulk purchase in end 2019, and then covid hits and I could not use them till now. Luckily it is a 2 year validity. Not sure if cineplex will extend the expiry date, but I think they should since they were closed for a while. So it has been a few years since I last watched a movie here. I usually go to Landmark cinema. This time the experience is better. The place is definitely cleaner. Thank you covid. The washroom is cleaned more frequently. The theater has the faux leather seats now which should make sanitizing and cleaning easier than fabric seats. I still do not like the seat which is not comfortable. At least the floor is no longer sticky. Everything is contactless. You buy your tickets online or at the box office but you have to do it yourself. The staff at the entrance will not touch your ticket to tear it, instead they will check it by sight. I think there is still limit to the seating capacity to follow social distancing protocol. Still a convenient place to watch a movie.

Although many people complain that SilverCity has killed off a lot of the oldschool mom and pop local joints, I must say they deliver a very decent movie experience. Parking is available in the lot underneath. There is a ton available. As with other SilverCity locations, there are certain amenities you can expect, such as large TVs showing the movie listings and show times, as well as self-serve booths. The staff are helpful, and the seats are nice and comfy. As long as you're not sitting in front of the connecting aisle. Then it gets seriously painful with the neck cramps. They should just tear our those seats. You're better getting a refund if you're forced to stuck there. Of course, be sure to get a Scene card and rack up some free movies. The only complaint I have with SilverCity in gerenal is that their washrooms are always freaking GROSS. Not sure if the ladies have this problem but quite often (as a guy) I have to across / through puddles on the way to do my thing. I always make a point not to drink anything before coming here.

A decent place to enjoy a movie. The seats recline and are very plush. The sound system is very loud and immersive. The viewing angles are decent, unless you are stuck at the sides or right up front. And, you can select your seats at time of ticket purchase. The only downsides are that parking is several floors below, and the cost of snacks may require a line of credit. Seriously, popcorn is made of livestock-grade corn, so there is no reason to charge that much for it.

This place is always super busy. I used to come here often for movies. Probably because its close to a skytrain and is easy for people to commute here. Because this is a chain, I find the seats here are the same as all Silver City. But once in awhile, they do renovations. So its not like its super run down. But I do find the washrooms a bit disgusting sometimes. Other than that Everything seems ok. As well, I was told by a friend who used to work there part of the popcorn on Tuesday are premade either night before or hours before the rush starts. So I usually avoid having popcorn on Tuesday. But again, I am not sure if they still do that since my friend has stopped working there in ages.

My go to movie theatre because it's close to home. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the dirty ladies room. I guess more female come to this theatre than male? It mighy be the reason why the staff can't keep up with cleanliness in the ladies room? Anyway, I like that there are tons of parking and its free. If you don't feel like having all that calories from buttered popcorn (I'm salivating haha!) then you can grab a bite from the food court before watching your movie. If you're too early for your movie, you can go shopping first. I find this location very convenient and accessible for people who don't drive because of its proximity to the skytrain.

That said, the popcorn was filled to the brim with that buttery goodness one would expect from a cinema outing. While it was a bit salty, the extra salt averted the need to run to the restroom during a three-hour long film and that was appreciated as it allowed me to enjoy the film in its totality. The food court offered: hot dogs, pulled-pork burgers, and fries: not a large selection of items but delicious especially when you consider the decent amount of toppings offered at the topping bar. The restroom was accommodating although some of the toilets would not flush as if they had been overused and had long since given up the ghost. Nevertheless, I was able to perform the deed in peace. Nice job, Cineplex.

I didn't know that my husband had purchased special tickets with motion vibrating seats, synchronized to the movie sounds effects. I spent the first 5 minutes completely annoyed that my chair wouldn't recline and an annoying massage feature to go along with that. After learning it was a special feature, I turned it back on. The vibrations do add to the experience, but I can't say that it is for me. The vibrating seats are stiff, narrow and very upright. I'd much rather have plush reclining seats as an added feature. The seat next to me had its rubber seat trim fallen off and hanging on the floor ++tripping hazard on the upper row. I appreciate all the innovative and different movie viewing options offered at this location. I even saw a sensory viewing option for autistic viewers??

They thank us for coming every time and do a good job at cleaning the theatres. This theatre has a few special experiences. The IMAX theatre is very big with excellent sound and graphics. We have watched Tron: Ares, Mission, Impossible: Dead Reckoning and The Bride! in IMAX. This IMAX theatre is a lot bigger than Silvercity Riverport which only has 10 rows. The only complaint I have is that it costs $28. Screen X is a 270 degree experience with 3 screens with selected scenes using all 3 screens. We watched Scream 7 and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in Screen X. The two side screens are 90 degrees on the side walls and lower resolution. It would be better if the screens were 45 degrees. The side screens usually have some background images. They have two UltraAVX theatres which has enhanced graphics and sound. We watched How to Train a Dragon, Ballerina, Lilo & Stitch, The Black Phone 2, Nobody 2, Wuthering Heights and Reminders of Him in UltraAVX. The action movies are worth paying the extra $6 but we can't tell much difference with the drama movies except for the bigger screen. The IMAX and UltraAVX theatres on level 2 have new leather, high back seating that lean back. Theatres 4-9 upstairs still have old, cloth seats that need to be upgraded. Some of them are broken and still being sold. The other locations we have been to, including International Village, Metropolis, Marine Gateway and Fifth Avenue all have new seats and do a better job at not selling broken seats and taping them off. They have soda machines that have 100+ flavours to choose from including zero sugar and unlimited refills. My favourites are strawberry sprite and pineapple Fanta. It's about $7 for a medium. Getting the large popcorn is worth it as it's a lot bigger than the medium and you get one free refill. Unlimited popcorn topping.

The Rio Theatre, located on Broadway at Commercial Drive (which is extremely transit convenient),…read moreis a fixture of the Commercial Drive neighbourhood. I don't know the entire history of the theatre, but apparently it was built in 1938. The Rio is known for screening cult classic movies and live shows, and in 2012, it fought the outdated BC Liquor board so that movie theatres could serve alcohol -- a big win! In the past, I have gone to a handful of shows (mostly movies showing at the Vancouver International Film Festival), but I didn't go often for two reasons: many of the movies I was interested in started way too late for me (such as at 9:30pm or 11pm), and years ago, I had a really negative experience. I don't recall when the incident happened -- perhaps it was after they had acquired a liquor licence -- but you had to be 19+ to go (that's the legal drinking age here), and while I was much older than 19, apparently I looked young, so I used to get so much shit for my appearance. Shortly before the event, my ID had expired and I was waiting for a new one to come in the mail. In the meantime, I was using my passport as ID. The person at the door was extremely rude and aggressive and made a big deal of specifically asking ME for ID -- from his tone, I think he didn't expect me to be of age. I pulled out my wallet from my purse to grab my ID, then remembered that I didn't have it as it was being renewed, so put it back into my purse and reached for my passport. As I was reaching for my passport, the rude and aggressive employee sneered, "Oh, you forgot your ID, I see, huh?" Yes, even thought this was nearly 15 years ago, I still remember this incident, and it always upset me. The guy was so fucking rude. Also, they used to insist on stamping your hand, and I hate having the inside of my wrist stamped because the ink rubs off on the side of my shirt, so prefer to have the top of my hand stamped. This guy was also rude about this. Anyway, due to events not working with my schedule and my encounter with the rude employee, I had little interest in going to the Rio unless it was for the film festival. However, recently, there have been several events I have been interested in: a screening of The Shawshank Redemption with a Q&A with Gil Bellows in July; a screening of The Room presented by Greg Sestero in August; a screening of Clue in October; a screening of the original Carrie presented by Mike Flanagan in October; and a film festival movie in October. And each time I had a great experience -- no more rude and aggressive employees! The most recent event I went to was John Waters live on December 3. My husband is a huge John Waters fan, so I bought tickets for his show. However, I had only bought the regular tickets, and my husband then told me he would have liked the VIP tickets (better seats, a signed poster, a post-show Q&A). On the Rio website, they clearly state that all sales are final and that tickets cannot be returned or exchanged. So what did I do? Emailed them asking if I could exchange the regular tickets for the more expensive VIP tickets, despite their policy. Their answer was an enthusiastic "absolutely!" and it was easy to exchange the tickets. Amazing customer service! I am a fan of the Rio and I look forward to seeing more shows and events!
