We watched Dune 2 here in the D-box seats and they were AMAZING for that type of movie - totally immersive and just took the viewing to a whole new level!! We had a blast and would definitely recommend. During our family spring break trip, we came here to see Dune 2 bc we're huge fans and it had just been released (early March). After reading about the D-box seats we took a chance on them and I'm so glad we did. The seats pitch and shift and vibrate in choreographed sequence to certain parts of the movie and for an action flick like Dune it was insane. When they flew, we flew. When they blew things up, we shook from head to toe! And when they were riding the giant worms, I totally felt like I was right there riding them too - I don't know how the seats can simulate the action like that, but they really do and it just brings the movie that much more alive. I don't think the Dbox seats would be worth the extra money for rom-coms or dramas probably- but for any kind of action movies - definitely! The Dbox seats have an adjustment option for the intensity of the motions and vibrations in case it's too much for you. I have vertigo so I thought I was gonna have issues - but I had it at full tilt movement and I was fine. My only complaint was those seats don't recline. The theater itself has a special surround sound experience as well. It was clean and comfy. They have lots of food and drink options - anything you could want. We easily bought our tickets online and were allowed to choose our seats during booking. Prices were pretty decent given the enhanced experience- I'd say they're moderate. Location was convenient for us - we walked from our downtown hotel. But I imagine parking might be an issue if you drive in.

This theatre used to be a nice place to visit. Not anymore - no customer service, prices have been raised to the moon and value for your money is 0/10. Just a massive rip-off. $5 for a small plastic bottle of coke from the machine ? Hello ? Are you guys insane ? The movie I watched was on the 3.rd level and it was hot as heck, at least turn the air conditioning on instead of being Uber cheap. Last time visiting this theatre due to your blatant greed. 0/10 I would give you ZERO STARS if the app let me.

Been visiting this theatre since it first opened in the 2000s, so I have to admit that I generally like it (except for a couple of former staff members that used to work here - let's just say customer service did mot come naturally to those former staff). Used to live a block and a half away for nearly seven years, still live not too far away and is the closest Cineplex location for me. I used to be the number one TimePlay player at this location before TimePlay was pulled. Been here hundreds of times. On this visit I saw the new Conjuring (2021) film.

Downtown Vancouver does not have many options when you want to watch a movie in the most central location, but when you do want to see the big hits, and whether you are stuck in downtown, live in downtown, or passing through downtown you are coming here, and hopefully you have already pre-bought your tickets and booked your seats. Cineplex seems to have cornered the market on taking all the big blockbusters and with their impressive sound and big picture set up.... got the market in their hands, and unless you want to watch the movie in less impressive settings.... you will be here. I've come here for two day one Star Wars showings practically in the middle of the night, including many day one showings of Marvel movies and as they say, as long as you have great seats you will have an enjoyable experience. With that said, I have sat on the corners..... like right along the wall a few times, and they are really not the best for sitting, have not tried the front 4 rows so I will not comment, but for the most part, with the screen, and the sound they are implementing, it is the place to see movies in Vancouver. As this theatre is built vertically, the first floor is where you buy tickets at the digital kiosks, or print and pick-up your online buys, or if you need to use vouchers, the customer service booth is here. Also what is here, is the gate-keepers that check your tickets and provide you 3-D glasses if your movie needs it. Then you go along escalators to either the second or third floor. Just know that they have their food vendors on both floors outside the theatre, so if you need to dash out of a movie for some eats, or a drink... or even the washroom, the layout works and you will not be too far from the action when you need to go back. For some people who have written that there is no free parking and would rather be at International Village watching a movie, well sorry to tell you that you will not be watching the big new blockbuster movie there, as even though both are Cineplex locations, this one plays the premium movies compared to the lesser of the two. As for viewing and seating, as long as you are in the center rows, as long as they are not the front 4, are all pretty good in terms of viewing range. Also that armrest that separates you from your neighbour can be raised if you are the hand holding, on date #???, type of person that likes to sit close to that special someone and doesn't need the drink holder. I know I have probably another Star Wars to watch here, and what is good is that afterwards, cause you are in downtown, everything is just a short walk away.

Wow! Theatres in the States need to take note from this place as it was one of the best theatre experiences I've had. I love all the food options this theatre had! There was such a wide selection it felt as if you were in a food court. I've certainly never seen a theatre with a "bistro" or serving full-fledged meals. The theatre premium theatre was also enjoyable as the screen was really big! The only thing I wish they had were reclining seats like AMC then it would have been 100% perfect. And, above all, this theatre was CLEAN! Kudos to Cineplex. Bravo.

One of the few theatres downtown, Scotia provides a getaway for those who are bored of Netflix. Free parking here simply doesn't exist during the day. For this reason alone, I would recommend Tinseltown over this place any day, all else being equal. The nearby streets do have some spots here and there in the evening if one times one's arrival correctly. This alone drops the place one star. For the yuppie types though, this place literally is smack in the middle of the downtown core. The place is split into 3 levels, with 3 big theatres on the 2nd floor and 6 smaller theatres on the 3rd floor, with giant long escalators connecting the floors. There are concession stands on the both upper floors, though the 3rd floor one always seems to be closed. That probably won't matter to most people though, as the food is an insane rip, as usual. Hitting a nearby bar is cheaper than getting stuff here for crying out loud. The seats aren't as comfortable as the likes of SilverCity, but they do the job. Overall a somewhat decent venue, but it has since been surpassed by other competing theatres. The 2 things this place has going for it is the location, as well as the lighter traffic.

I always like this theater. Its close by and the best part is that they have multiple theater rooms. They have upgraded their pop machine and now they have multiple options in drinks. This is so cool. Came here to watch Star Wars. Loved the theater rooms. Its clean and seats are spacious. Too bad the Dbox seats were all sold out. Would love to sit in them. The theater is located downtown so its always busy. Parking is costly. So I suggest taking the bus. This is a three floors theater.

It was totally fine and it was an interesting Imax movie, but not advertise as something more when it is just an Imax. Leg room in the seating was TIGHT. It was definitely cool has the lights behind the screen were turned on to illuminate some of the inner workings of the Imax sound system. I enjoyed the museum exhibits more than the Imax.

I mean, you can't lose yourself in the imagery, such as flying over a mountaintop and really believing it, because the whole time the dome pattern of the screen is visible. Have they really not figured out a way to fix this? The film we saw, Superpower Dogs, was very good, and we kept saying "Wow!" as we learned so many fascinating things about dogs. So much so that I ALMOST felt moved to take a dog into my home. So no complaints about the actual film we saw. No, our problems were with the theatre. The viewer needs to look only directly into the centre of the screen, otherwise the image is distorted. It's easy to start feeling dizzy or queazy if you let your eyes wander to the edges. The image was lacking depth of colour, or saturation, in a lot of the scenes. It was often pale and lacking contrast. Is this because it's stretched across such a large space? Wasn't it shot with Imax cameras? One would think it must have been, yet it seemed unfit for this purpose, with the lack of intensity and the distortion anywhere but centre screen. Patrons are not allowed into the dome until 15 minutes before the film starts, but I recommend being early so you can get a good seat high up and in the centre. We sat in the last row so at least we didn't have noisy people behind us. Before the film started, a woman kept yelling at a man sitting near her, telling him to move along the row to make more room for her group. No staff member appeared to deal with it, although another patron told the arguers to "grow up and set a better example for children in the audience". Bravo to him! Luckily we had a Groupon discount because this experience was hardly worth the costly tickets ($12.75 each). The show was 45 minutes long and cost more to get in than a regular feature film. If we'd (granny and granddaughter) combined this show with a ScienceWorld visit, the total admission for two of us would have been over $50 out of my senior's pension! Ridiculous! If you are planning a trip to Vancouver, be warned: Nearly all the popular attractions are wildly overpriced for what you get, and this place is no exception!

I don't know the entire history of the theatre, but apparently it was built in 1938. The Rio is known for screening cult classic movies and live shows, and in 2012, it fought the outdated BC Liquor board so that movie theatres could serve alcohol -- a big win! In the past, I have gone to a handful of shows (mostly movies showing at the Vancouver International Film Festival), but I didn't go often for two reasons: many of the movies I was interested in started way too late for me (such as at 9:30pm or 11pm), and years ago, I had a really negative experience. I don't recall when the incident happened -- perhaps it was after they had acquired a liquor licence -- but you had to be 19+ to go (that's the legal drinking age here), and while I was much older than 19, apparently I looked young, so I used to get so much shit for my appearance. Shortly before the event, my ID had expired and I was waiting for a new one to come in the mail. In the meantime, I was using my passport as ID. The person at the door was extremely rude and aggressive and made a big deal of specifically asking ME for ID -- from his tone, I think he didn't expect me to be of age. I pulled out my wallet from my purse to grab my ID, then remembered that I didn't have it as it was being renewed, so put it back into my purse and reached for my passport. As I was reaching for my passport, the rude and aggressive employee sneered, "Oh, you forgot your ID, I see, huh?" Yes, even thought this was nearly 15 years ago, I still remember this incident, and it always upset me. The guy was so fucking rude. Also, they used to insist on stamping your hand, and I hate having the inside of my wrist stamped because the ink rubs off on the side of my shirt, so prefer to have the top of my hand stamped. This guy was also rude about this. Anyway, due to events not working with my schedule and my encounter with the rude employee, I had little interest in going to the Rio unless it was for the film festival. However, recently, there have been several events I have been interested in: a screening of The Shawshank Redemption with a Q&A with Gil Bellows in July; a screening of The Room presented by Greg Sestero in August; a screening of Clue in October; a screening of the original Carrie presented by Mike Flanagan in October; and a film festival movie in October. And each time I had a great experience -- no more rude and aggressive employees! The most recent event I went to was John Waters live on December 3. My husband is a huge John Waters fan, so I bought tickets for his show. However, I had only bought the regular tickets, and my husband then told me he would have liked the VIP tickets (better seats, a signed poster, a post-show Q&A). On the Rio website, they clearly state that all sales are final and that tickets cannot be returned or exchanged. So what did I do? Emailed them asking if I could exchange the regular tickets for the more expensive VIP tickets, despite their policy. Their answer was an enthusiastic "absolutely!" and it was easy to exchange the tickets. Amazing customer service! I am a fan of the Rio and I look forward to seeing more shows and events!
