2/4/2024 - Dropping in to see 'Dreamworlds' which is the concert footage from Pet Shop Boys in Copenhagen.
    Mikhail H.

I do not make it over here as often as I would like but this is such a great spot and they tend to get a few films which I genuinely would not have been able to see anywhere else. Most recently I found that they were playing Dreamworlds which was the Pet Shop Boys concert in Copenhagen last year. My friends and I got perfect seats and the other members of the audience were also completely in the zone with us. The sound was so great! I remember coming here for the Grace Jones documentary - no one else was playing it either! Sometimes this area of NW gets a lot more busy but I have always scored a pretty nearby parking space thankfully down a side street with minimal circling around first. Going to 7 or 730 showings does help. As an ADA person though it is a bit of a challenge for your snacks. There is a stairway down to concessions and they do seem to have a lift to ride but it appears in non working order. My friend and I both struggle pretty hard and painfully with stairs so it was A LOT. I was so happy that they had regular Coca-Cola and ice...I love you Portland but the barely carbonated garbage artsy soda is gross, no matter what tragic brand you have and I can't even water down the noxious taste with ice since next to no theater has ice as most people just want beer which I am allergic to. I just want a soda WITH ICE... Thank you Cinema 21 for having that and some good candy options. Last visit the popcorn was a bit on the stale side which was weird since the time before I remember it being great.

    - My neighborhood movie theater (and goddamn am I lucky to have this right down the street) - Shows cool film festival films that are definitely hit or miss, but dang when they hit, they hit - Always very nice and helpful employees

Nestled in the heart of quaint, yet bustling Nob Hill, Cinema 21 is one of the few indie theaters that actually allow minors in at all times. I spoke on the phone with who I think is the owner, and when I showed up he was also working the ticket booth. Super friendly. Because I came a little early, they needed some time to get the theater cleaned up, so I'm glad there was an area for me to sit. An added bonus -and don't quote me on this- but I think I remember seeing a gender-neutral restroom sign. While the building itself isn't very big, the main theater is sizable, which makes for a great viewing experience. I'm honored to be able to support local businesses like this one.

Great prices, very clean, and love that movie posters are displayed all around. The sound quality was fine and it was nice to have some leg room for the older chairs that don't recline back, but it wasn't an issue at all as the seats were comfortable. Clean restrooms too with all gender or men/women restrooms too. It was cool to see balcony seating too, though it wasn't open for "Parasite". Cinema 21 just gives me a feel of a theater that keeps it simple for like a small town, which is a nice touch with a bustling city like Portland- giving you a chance to escape a couple hours.

This is my favorite theater. The staff is so nice and they play special independent films that you can't see other places. Great food, too!

The only downside I see is that the parking lot next to it doesn't belong to them according to the person I bought my ticket from. I have mobility issues so I park in ADA and did so. The lot has a ton of tow notices clearly stating customer parking only, but the building seems up for lease. And when I went back to my car, there was a very graffiti covered bent sign, which looked like it was saying parking for the theater. I'm paranoid because some of those tow companies are straight up scary. Just saying park at your own risk. The bathroom... clean, easy to navigate with soap, easy to use sink and you get to wipe your hands. Concessions - yes! And thank you for having such a great selection, actual ice, fountain soda... delicious popcorn that was fresh... and Bravo to the sweetheart responding to my epic butter request by demonstrating how heavy the bag was.... I love you so much! The prices are completely great too! I am always scared going in to a new space, especially when I am going to be sitting down in that seat for 2 hours. What a great surprise this was - when I picked the seat on the screen, the guy said he felt the ADA seat was really the best seat in the theater at Laurelhurst. After sitting down, I agree - the view was perfection and the seat was amazingly comfortable.

They have food at the front and the prices were very reasonable - $5 for a slice of pepperoni pizza, which was good. Our theater had a medium-sized screen - felt like a long, relatively narrow seating area. We were towards the back and it was a good experience. If I came again, I'd want to sit closer to the middle. The seats are super comfy and there are tables in front of all the seats. I'd come here again.

Word got around that they were cleaning the theater (still!) so wouldn't let us in. We wanted to buy snacks and nobody was allowed to buy from the concessions either. When I asked the guy holding everybody back, he said everybody would just storm the theaters so we all had to wait. We couldn't buy our food and go back to the waiting area. This really made no sense to me as then we all had mob the concessions at once and a long line formed. That put me off. But once we made it through and got our food, our experience improved. I hadn't been to this IMAX before. It was great! The chairs are very comfy and the temp in the theater was also pretty comfortable. I've been freezing in theaters, so appreciated that this one wasn't cold. Enjoyed the great sound and format of the IMAX for The Odyssey.

The seats lean back slightly but don't recline.

From the start, the theater's air conditioning was not working, making the environment uncomfortably hot and leading to multiple moments of physical discomfort. We were later informed by an employee that the HVAC system has been down and there is no clear timeline for repair, which was disappointing to hear...especially since this was not communicated to guests ahead of time. In addition, the audio had major issues during the first half of the film, and the movie had to be paused midway to address the problem. While we understand that technical difficulties can happen, the way the situation was handled added to our frustration. When we spoke with the manager, Danielle, her response came across as defensive and dismissive of our experience. This was particularly frustrating given that she had a box fan positioned on the counter directly facing her, while guests in the theater were left dealing with the heat. It made the situation feel minimized rather than acknowledged. We do appreciate that refunds were provided, but customer service is just as important as compensation. A more empathetic and proactive approach would have made a significant difference in how this situation was received. It used to be the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant Church. There's some cool millwork, antique light fixtures, and large curved staircases, but overall this is on the tamer side for McMenamins properties. The venue had standing room and high-tops on the same level as the stage. Upstairs is theater style seating that was decently comfortable and had a counter spot to put your drink. There weren't any bad views, and the sound system was better than I expected. I think there are two bars, one on each floor, but the upstairs one was closed for the small event I attended.
