It's a scientific fact that grilled cheese sandwiches from small town diners taste better. Our family stopped in on our way through town, seeking a lunch break en route to our destination. Cindy B's is everything you want a hometown cafe to be--welcoming, charming, friendly staff with good senses of humor, and absolutely delicious. The beef veggie soup and grilled cheese was spot on. My family members all enjoyed their food, as well, and then our lovely hosts brought us a slice of coconut pie and pineapple upside down cake, just for stopping through. Diner pie...oh my. Skimpy servings. It used to be a nice place. But has dropped off the deep end. If you want bloody chicken that's the place to get it. Lukewarm gravy on those biscuits sure. I returned, for lunch and this time I didn't dine in. The call-in order was simple but the pick-up part not so much. The place is at capacity, I waited outside the second door to allow some people to exit because I could see that there was a line at the register. The line was not designated so two older yt men who got up from dining in and got right in from of me. I was standing adjacent the cash register so I decided to stand along the cashiers side. As I was about to pay I noticed a line had formed on the same side I was just standing and they thought I was skipping them. A more fluid process to pay would be helpful, like the waitress complete the dine-in checks so the customers are not crashing into the takeout customers. I noticed that the menu changes for lunch/dinner each week so I took the opportunity to buy two meals, save one for dinner. The turkey with stuffing, green beans and corn...4/10, I turkey was tender but the corn and green beans were dumped right out the can, no special touch, the stuffing was mushy. The chicken and dumplings with mashed potatoes and hush puppies was the second meal. The chicken and dumpling 5/10 was more like a chicken noodle soup with a disproportioned 75% dumplings and 25% chicken. The mash potatoes were straight out the box. Finally I got the "4 layer cheesecake" 5/10. Total cost, a wasted $35. Overall, sub par food but 3 stars bc the service is good!! Will not return, next stop... read more

This is a little bit of a hole in the wall but a good one at that! My boyfriend and I took a pit stop here while we were on our way to St. Louis and we couldn't have picked anywhere better. The first indication that this place was good? It was packed! Even so, we were sat very quickly and found the menu very reasonably priced. I ended up going with one of the blueberry pancake specials and it hit the spot. The hash browns were perfectly cooked, the poached eggs were just the right consistency, I really couldn't ask for more. Our waitress was also very nice and made us feel right at home. Though I don't think we'll be in Murphysboro again anytime soon, I totally recommend stopping in if you're nearby! read more

Excellent service and delicious homestyle cooking. Breakfast for the four of us was great. Fresh eggs, sausage, hash browns along with bisquits and gravy and a glass of ice cold milk for me. The others had french toast, pancacks various prepared eggs along with great coffee. Just a let's get breakfast at a local restaurant stop and boy were we pleased. awful breakfast: chicken fried steak and eggs, toast was dry and burned I don't recognize the meat but neither my gf or I could barely cut it w/a steak knife.............my coffee was burned and tasted terrible my steak was awful, they both most have been road kill I do not like to be negative (at least the waitress was nice) but at $36 with a tip ! we were ripped off and we both had stomach aches after for hours. one of the worst meals I have had in my life and I am 70 yo ! read more

The best thing about this place is the service and cheap prices. I ordered scrambled eggs, sausage, fried potatoes, and coffee. The eggs were brown from a dirty skillet w/ leftover butter. The sausages were the kind you get in a frozen box like "brown & serve" and I got potato nuggets instead of fried potatoes. I didn't bother to ask to send back, because what's the point? The coffee wasn't good either. But service was friendly and quick. read more

Discovered this wonderful place on the weekend for the 2017 Eclipse. Since I drove all the way from Texas I thought I may as well try out a local cafe. The service was friendly, family owned, and overall just great. I ordered a pork sandwich and coffee with fries, and my cousin had cinnamon rolls. We both really liked the food here. I have to thank the local officers of Murphysboro for recommending us this incredible cafe! Y'all are great! If I ever head north again I'll sure try to stop by for another cup of coffee and breakfast. read more

This used to be one of my favorite little diners to visit. We don't eat out very often, but this little place was always a sure thing. Friendly staff, decent food, reasonable prices. I am not sure what changes have taken place internally at Cindy B's but I would no longer recommend this place to anyone. I honestly think at this point they only stay in business because of their proximity to Jackson County Courthouse. The second to last time I was there, I ordered an omelet. Halfway through the omelet, I partially swallowed a hair. I am not usually squeamish, but the hair hit my throat in such a way I could not get it out and it affected my gag reflex. One trip to the bathroom to empty the contents of my stomach later, the waitress was very apologetic (my husband complained) and we were given a free omelet. I gave the omelet to a friend as I was still feeling the after effects (super, super grossed out) from the first hair omelet. During the omelet incident, the waitress was friendly and apologetic. The friendly staff is often the best thing about Cindy B's. A few weeks later, we went in on a Saturday night and had the worst service I have had any where. Our waitress was either completely stupid or totally rude. I really couldn't tell if she was clueless or simply didn't care that she was supposed to serve food to people. Food that would normally take 15 minutes took 45 minutes. Once we got the food, the mashed potatoes were cold and the gravy on them had actually congealed. The fish was burnt. My husband's spaghetti was not good either. He said that a can of ragu over spaghetti would have been better. I did not get my green beans and had to ask for them specifically. I also asked for a to-go carton because I wanted to go home and heat up my cold food. At this point, I did not trust the waitress to manage it. I also mentioned that I never got the green beans. She eventually got us one to go box, when we clearly needed more than one and brought out in a bowl the green beans. Was this woman serious? Wouldn't someone with a brain put the green beans in a to go container since we were obviously wanting to leave? I asked her for another container and after an eternity with no waitress and no container, I went up to the counter to pay and to hopefully ask someone else (there seemed to be a competent waitress there - all of her customers arrived after us and got food a millennia before us) for a to-go container. They were sitting right there within easy reach. No such luck. Our nightmare waitress was there and still managed to take three hundred years to get us another to-go container. We were very tempted to leave without paying the bill as none of the meal had been worth it and the fact that our waitress was so awful really made the meal stressful and annoying. We do not eat out often, quite simply because we do not often have the money. To have the little money we allot for something special to be wasted was very disheartening. We wanted a fun little pick me up, and what we got was miserable drudgery. I am very said to say that this place is no longer on our list of places we recommend and we will never be going back. I wish I knew what happened to this once great diner. I would avoid this place at all costs. You are better off with fast than this awful place. read more

Hmmm..... this is exactly what is says--- a cafe--- well.. no.. a diner.. a small town local diner... and let me ask you guys something--- WHERE IN THE WORLD are all the restaurants in Murphysboro?? or anywhere around? My lord--- this cafe didnt even come up on YELP..! Thank goodness for Google sometimes.!! We were searching everywhere after leaving Alto Pass from our B&B at Von Jakob and incase you are wondering, we decided NOT to stick around for breakfast at the B&B becuase it wasnt untill 9:30-- and aint no one got time to wait that long--! So we left, and hit the road back home... (2 hours away)---- Ugh, seriously, there is no where to eat in those parts as far as breakfast---so this was our choice... I already had my breakfast planned out before we arrived...biscuits and gravy with a side of hashbrowns and a sprite and coffee-- (i know, i had to have sprite bc I may or may not have been a tad hungover)---- The breakfast was good... typical diner... the hashbrowns were more of a smashed mashed potatoes that were browned-- (not grated) but they were okay... The biscuits and gravy were decent- again..not mine, but the satisfied what I needed... If you're in the area, stop in, have some breakfast-- i dont think you'll be disappointed...just dont go expecting anything fancy. and fyi-- the place is cheap--! and i also got a side of sausage patties-- i forgot to mention that, and those were tasty. read more
