A different experience and something everyone should try at least once. The girls definitely has skills and made me want to go roller skating to practice on perfecting my skills. The major thing that was missing is knowing what the hand gestures meant because you couldn't hear what was being said on the sound system. It was nice they put in the brochure the concept of the game for someone like me that had never been to a game. Lastly, the location could have been better... it was very dusty causing my allergies to flare up so, I had to leave after halftime. read more

I came here with my BFF because she seen a poster at a national chain coffee shop. We got here early and parked right off of the street, we walked in (I had purchased my tickets online). We stopped and got a Dr Pepper to drink and walked down and sat right behind the Penalty box! We got to see everything from the practice laps to the team meet and greets... This was extremely fun and I really wish I had found out about this sooner. We had so much fun watching this and taking pictures. My only complaint is the bleachers (bring some seat cushions, you will need them). read more

This is certainly an interesting event. I have never been to a roller derby before this. So as a first time experience it was different. The stadium is a little out dated but gave the proper vibe for what you would expect roller derby to be like. The mascot was entertaining and they had different foods and beverages available for purchase. You could even pick up some rollergirls t-shirts at the event as well. I would recommend sitting as close as possible because then you could feel like you are more apart of the action. read more

Won a pair of tickets to the season home opener this year. Had never been to roller derby but heard it was fun so why the heck not! There was easy, free parking on the streets adjacent to the field house as we arrived early to take advantage of a fanny pack freebie! They had food trucks outside, and inside there was a variety of beers, soda, and snacks. The team had a cool mascot, and lots of fan gear for purchase. Luckily they were handing out programs at the door so we could figure out what this sporting event was all about. There were a ton of people here from all walks of life, so fun atmosphere. I do have to say both the A and B teams were killing their opponents so it did become a little long, esp if you had kids with you (which we however did not). I went to a few of the 2011 Cincinnati Rollergirls games and had a blast! It's a great, casual sport for fans. You can just show up and grab a seat, and the concessions are reasonable. Plus, the whole GRRL POWER atmosphere is pretty rockin'. I took my family and friends here for my birthday party last year, and everyone from my mom to my 9-year-old nephew enjoyed it. Indianapolis was the opposing team, and my family is from Indianapolis, so we had fun screaming at each other. Unfortunately, Cincinnati lost. Roller derby seems like one of those sports that's great for all ages and interest-levels (I'm not usually a fan of sports, so I speak with authority). I can't wait for the 2012 season! read more

The skaters are lots of fun and the audience is allowed to go on to the floor during the player introductions which makes for a more interactive sporting event. If you call yourself a sports fan, but have never watched flat track roller derby, you owe it to yourself and these women to check out a bout. Come early and tailgate or at least when doors open at 6pm for dollar beers. Walk around the lobby and say hello the rollergirls themselves who pass out free programs. Then find a seat and get ready for great Saturday night action. After game you can get your program signed by the rollergirls. Next season, I would love to see them utilize the big screens to play a how-to video that either they've made or get permission to use a certain popular derby how-to video from youtube. I think it would help newbies feel comfortable with what they're about to see and possibly turn them into repeat attendees. read more

I went to the roller derby for the first time last night and its a dang good time! Unfortunately we missed the $1 beer happy hour but the tickets are only $12. Roller derby is back on the rise in America and of my friends were surprised to know it existed in Cincy. I'd been meaning to get to a game ever since I heard about it... And since i saw the movie Whip It (which, incidentally, is cute and I would recommend it). I like the girl-power and energy. The game is fun, the tickets are well priced, the music is good, the crowd is energizing and it's great for all ages! Next time I plan to go and tailgate and get there earlier to have more central seats. read more

Cincinnati Roller Girls is the best deal in town for a reasonably priced night of sports action. Sure it's different than catching the Reds or the Bengals, but it's certainly just as fun and often more competitive. Part of the fun is showing up early and tailgating out in the parking lot. Grilling, cornhole, and drinking is prevalent and encouraged. A good crowd shows up well in advance and it is easy to make friends with the other tailgaters. The Cincinnati Roller Girls will often briefly stop out if you are there early enough, and you are sure to get a visit from the the team mascot, Wooly-Bully. One word of warning on a hot day-there is NO air conditioning at the Cincinnati Gardens where the bouts happen. So dress for the weather, and stay hydrated. Also, the beer selections at the Garden's are atrocious. There is much better stuff to be had at the tailgate party before a bout. The bouts themselves are usually very competative and a lot of fun to watch. it make take you a couple of bouts before you begin picking up on the rules and scoring, but once you do, it is easy to follow. Seats in the Gardens give you good view of the bouts from almost every vantage point. They get a good crowd of zealous fans there, averaging attendance of about 4,000 a night. Watching these female athletes is amazing fun. Prepare for thrown elbows, cheap shots, bone-crushing hits, names with wild double-entendres and outgoing, outlandish personas to match. Don't let the names and characters fool you-the bouts are all real-nothing is fixed or fake. It's good old American fun! So bring the whole family! And get them all drunk. read more

A bunch of hot girls in skimpy clothes beating the crap out of each other... Seriously what could be better?! Oh yeah $1 beer! thats right, DOLLAR BEER!!! Even if you have no idea what Roller Derby is or have the slightest clue how its played, or you've attended every bout and think maybe you almost have it figured out, it doesn't matter. You'll never really learn the rules/scoring till you play, but its still awesome to watch! In a nutshell, the 2 players that start at the back of the pack (with stars on their helmets) need to get through said pack before the other team in order to score the most points. They get points for everyone they pass in the 2 minute round. The person who breaks through the pack first has the ability to stop the round though before 2 minutes if they feel like it. Normally if the other team is hot on her heels, or she finally just feels sorry for them and decides to cut them a break. Its in the Gardens so it gets unbearably hot in the summer. Be forewarned. But the bonus is you can tailgate and grill out and drink in the parking lot before hand and then get inside for $1 beers til 7pm (only 2 at a time, so have a buddy to hand off to ;) ) There are 2 games, basically like high school with the JV and the Varsity team. Floor seats are a bit more expensive, but not by more than a few dollars, and really get you in the action, and give you the ability to help with the DEElightamid, or the beer can pyramid thats set up every match on a corner, just waiting on someone to get knocked off the track and into it! Seriously! If you haven't gone yet... GO!! Even if you don't know much about the sport or what the heck is even going on, it doesn't matter. They have fun, the awesome mascot throws out free shit and you get $1 beers and watch girls knock each other around... do you seriously need anymore reasons?! read more

The Cincy Rollergirls is such a great time. Not only is it great for for families, it's a cheap date night! The tickets are cheap, the drinks are cheap, even the food is cheap, but it's still a lot of fun. We went to our first rollergirl game last year and this years season opener had such a larger crowd. I can't wait to see what the crowd will be like at the end of the year and word gets around that we actually have a roller derby team. The rollergirls are very good at what they do. Not only do they usually win, they usually kill the other teams they play. Figuratively of course. If you don't know the rules, they explain the basics in the pamphlet you get and use the first match to figure out what exactly is going on. That way, when they black sheeps are out there, you can really root for them and know what's going on. If you haven't gone to a match yet, I highly suggest going. read more

When most people think of professional sports, they think of the big three: MLB, NBA & NFL. Those who didn't grow up in major metro areas know that some of the most entertaining professional athletes are barely professional at all. Small groups of dedicated semi-pros make great athletic competition accessible to all. The Cincinnati Rollergirls are just such a group. The Cincinnati Rollergirls are the very definition of semi-pro. They do make a bit of compensation for their effort, but it would never cover the amount of time, energy & blood they give to their sport. They're all professionals in other assorted fields from white collar to blue. A relatively new group, they are very competitive in their tier and always deliver a strong effort. They do travel as well as play in the Cincinnati Gardens in Norwood. The costs to see them are very low. This is not a review of the facilities they skate in. That place is a dump and significantly harms the experience. As an organization, the Cincinnati Rollergirls are a great benefit to their community. Despite some odd criminal mischief a few years ago, they are great roll models for young ladies and a fun, no-ego professional sports team. They deserve your support & encouragement. read more

As the 2011 Derby Season comes to a close, I'm reminded of all the action-packed bouts I've enjoyed with CRG at Cincinnati Gardens. I've been an avid derby fan for years. Each game this season, I brought someone new to watch. Each time, they fell in love with the sport. Never heard of roller derby? The Lambs are the "B" team, and Black Sheep the "all-stars". Both teams are tough-as-nails and use amazing tactics while playing the sport. Crowd favorites include Jammers (point-scorers): K-Lethal, Hannah Ouchocinco, Weezy, Hop Devil, and Nastee. K-Lethal makes lapping the pack look effortless! We mustn't forget the Blockers, the pack of women who protect the Jammer, push opponents to the ground and do all the dirty work. Sk8 Crime is the brutal enforcer of the team, and Buckhead Betty can take out a triage of opponents with one hip. Cincinnati Rollergirls also have a mascot, Wooly Bully, a sheep that riles up the audience and throws out free stuff. This season he even had a Jazzie scooter. One thing that could be improved is the announcing. My newcomer friends always mention if I hadn't been calling the game for them, they would have no idea what was going on. Penalties need to be specifically announced as well as why the Lead Jammer calls off the jam. I'd gladly offer my announcing services if needed. =) With over 4,000 fans turning out for each game, roller derby is gaining popularity in the Queen City. Roller derby probably isn't that high on the list of traditional American pastimes. That list is reserved for headier, classier stuff, like football or the hundredth superhero movie or getting piss drunk and saying things to that one friend's spouse that you'll regret later. Oh wait, no--turns out we spend our time doing stupid things. Which is great, because in the grand scheme of things, this one really isn't that stupid. So let's all just add it to the list together. Welcome to The Show, roller girls. So this is an incredibly complicated and occasionally brutal game played at the Cincinnati Gardens. Drinking is all but mandated with the 1$ Hudy Delights (so you can knock out the awkward spouse thing while you're here, if you like). The women dress about as provocatively as volleyball players, which is to say sort of, but don't come expecting to drool over soft-core porn or something. They're mostly helmets and pads, really. Which is good, because they get rammed into concrete a lot. If you're not familiar with this game, it involves a lone girl from each team trying to skate laps around the herd, while opposing defenders try to stop her by just about any means necessary short of full-out tackling or handguns. The intricacies of scoring make bowling look like soccer, so the game actually requires a little more care and attention than your average sport. Which, now that I think about it, doesn't really jive with all that drinking. Oh well. Unfortunately, the Gardens are incredibly loud and the acoustics are awful. It's like it's not just the floors that are poured from concrete, but the walls, seats, and other people, as well. The announcers are drowned out the whole time; you literally won't hear anything they say, and hearing what the person next to you says will be a stretch, too. Some of the audience can be obnoxious when they get a few Delights in them, but if this bothers you, why are you here? Overall, a pretty good time, and a great story to tell your friends if you want a nice "You did WHAT?!" Also, the fans on the floor always build pyramids with their beer cans. It's like its own little side sport. read more

Wow - wow - wow! Amazing! My parents were visiting from Belgium and I thought: What could we do that is American and that they have never seen before? The Rollergirls turned out to be the best answer ever. It was also my first game. The first 5 minutes I was trying to figure out what exactly was happening but then I got totally caught up in the game. Our favorites were Hot slice in the first game and K Lethal in the second one. Honestly, my dad was even suggesting to get her autograph. Boys will be boys...! I felt kind of proud I went to a game as lots of my colleagues have never been! Just went to my first Cincinnati Rollergirls match (games?), either way its called, it was still a good time. They play at the Cincinnati Gardens, one of my favorite places as a kid, brought back good memories. It took some time to understand what was going on since I've never watched it before, but once I did, it was great. Constant action, bodies flying everywhere (some girl got her nose broken and another one puked, it was pretty sweet), and happy hour just before it all started. Tons of fun, truly diverse crowd too. And general admission seating too, so you and your friends can sit together pretty much wherever you want. Few (minor) drawbacks: For one it happened to be like 95 degrees outside that day, and it felt that miserable inside too b/c there was no ventilation(though I doubt that happens very often). Second, once inside, everything from soda, beer, hotdogs, food was all "Cash Only" and the only ATM I saw was out of order. So basically, plan ahead and bring cash. Despite those minor setbacks, it was a fun evening and relatively inexpensive ($12 for adult general admission tix) event. I'd happily go back. And this time I'll come prepared. read more

There is not a live sporting event in this city that gives you more for your dollar, period. $10 in advance or $12 at the door for tickets for a double header of roller derby games that last around 3 hours. On top of that parking is free and $1 beers are available. The large sheep mascot helps to make it a fun event for the little ones and the bone crushing hits from the blockers will even have grandma cheering. So make sure you catch a game in 2012...... So I have not seen any of the more popular Rollergirl movies and everyone always ask me if the Cincinnati Rollergirls are like that. Honestly, I have no idea. What I do know, that if you are looking for a good, cheap time with a bunch of chicks, Rollergirls is for you. The ticket price is reasonable, but the real deal is the $1 PBR. After tailgating (a must!) you can step inside (where it will be very hot, the one reason I can't give it 5 stars) and that is when this gets real! One great part is the unique names Rollergirls have, and even the refrees do too. It is always fun to sit with your friends and think about what your name would be during breaks in the action. The rules can be a little complicated, but pretty easy to pick up and it is definitely action packed like only a contact sport can be. Can't wait for the next season to start! read more

This team is one of the best things about Cincinnati. Going to a bout is entertaining for the whole family. Prior to the bouts there are families who tailgate outside of The Cincinnati Gardens. They grill and have a good time with one another. The team is a top 15 in the country, but that never goes to these ladies heads, because after every home bout they encourage their fans to come down to the floor for pictures and autographs. This is hard hitting action, and if you get the chance get a floor seat and in fact sit on the floor near the track and you will not beleive your eyes. I always have to go to 1 game a year just to remember that I don't like the Rollergirls. Sorry ladies but I just can't get into it. I understand the rules and get the scoring but I just can't do it for some reason. Stuart T. has a fantastic review of the ladies and he mentions some of the things that I don't like. 60 minute matches just seem to go on forever and there are dull moments. The last time I was there the action just stopped. All the girls were just stopped in the corner moving about 1/2 mile/hr....wow exciting. I do like the $1 beers and there's nothing like the nachos and cheese at the Garden. I'd like to support the roller girls more than once a year but again sorry ladies, I just can't sit through the whole thing read more

After randomly winning 2 tickets (thanks Yelp!) we - my wife, my 17 year old daughter, her friend and myself- went to our first roller derby. I wasn't sure whether I should expect WWF, female mud wrestling or women's basketball, none of which is especially my or my family's cup of tea. Turns out it was the best of all three, and my family has a new favorite sport. The ladies all take on WWF style pseudonyms, that brings the laughs and smiles. They look pretty good (at least from the second tier of the Gardens, I'll be getting floor seats next time and give an update) and they hit and bump and trip and tackle each other, which makes it fun and unique. And they are quite athletic and have great teamwork and strategic skills- it's a real sport. I like the sport for the same reason I like the Wii- you can get up to speed with how the game is played and start enjoying it immediately. A quick read in the free program and you'll have a pretty good grasp of the rules. For extra credit and enjoyment, use your smartphone to go the website listed in the program and read up on penalties. By the time the farm team was done, I knew enough to really enjoy the main feature. By brushing up on the rules, you will also compensate for my only complaint- you simply can't understand a word the announcers are saying, at least where we were sitting. There's some other fine tuning to be done, that will come with time or maybe a venue change, but it's nothing that would make me think twice about going again. read more

I've been interested in Roller Derby for about five years (not personally since I can't roller skate and don't like getting hurt) but for some reason never made it to a bout in any of my previous cities. Once I realized that the season opener of the Cincinnati Rollergirls was coming up, I knew that it was time to check it out. We ended up heading to Cincinnati Gardens early to attend the (freezing) Yelp Tailgate. This allowed us to avoid the crazy parking situation apparently experienced by others. Tailgating is encouraged so I imagine on a warmer day more people take advantage. Cafe de Wheels also showed up prior to the bout starting...a happy site for me as I devoured a yummy warm grilled cheese. The doors finally opened and we made our way to warmth. We decided to take advantage of Happy Hour and grab a Hudy Delight for $1. After finding a seat we were entertained by a bout between the B-teams for Cincinnati and Nashville...and then the main event with the A-teams. I definitely recommend anyone interested in checking the event out...the crowd gets into it and you are watching athletes who are serious and love their sport. After the festivities - getting out, especially turning left, seemed pretty busy...so we just turned right and figured it out. read more

Everything is cheap except the women. Tickets are cheap, parking is cheap, beer is cheap, food is cheap. The t-shirts they sell are even cheap. Roller girls is just plain. Do yourself a favor and troll the internets and learn the basic rules. It was much more enjoyable once I did that. In many ways it's similar to football. Each jam is like a play - a little game within the game - so it keeps your attention and because they are always swapping out the jammers you actually get to learn different styles. The only drawback was the crowd. I have a feeling most don't know what's going on. This is most telling in that when things were exciting people would stand up right in front of my and kinda meander around. I can't imagine the same thing happening at the Reds with a full count or at PBS with it 4th and goal. But that's not the roller girls fault. Shout at them to sit their bums down and enjoy the women doing their thing. read more

I love the rollergirls, been going for years. And each year seems to get better, along with the team. Tailgating: just do it! Plenty of free parking, so no excuse. Plus it ensures you will be there nice and early to go in at 6 and enjoy $1 beers for an hour. In the past it was PBR, but this year they switched to Hudy. Be sure to stock up (you can buy 2 at a time) to last through the matches. I believe they jack the price up to like $4/can after the happy hour. The games are so much fun. It can be confusing for newbies, so I'd suggest reading the rules of the sport online before going. Or not, you'll still have a good time and figure out what's going on eventually. It's not often that you can use the phrases, "Fun for the whole family" and "Hot girl on girl action" to describe the same event, but it happens with the Cincinnati Rollergirls. Make sure to come early and tailgate in the parking lot of the historic Cincinnati Gardens and meet the soon to be famous CRG mascot the Wooly Bully and maybe even Bo Peep. Grills are welcome. This is a case where there really isn't a bad seat in the house and they are affordable general admission tickets at $10 for adults and $5 for kids and adult floor seats at $15. You will get an opportunity to meet some of the athletes as you enter the Gardens, as they are there handing out programs. Buy your tickets, get a $1 PBR, choose a seat and sit back and enjoy the action. A quick synopsis of the rules are in the program and it doesn't take long to get caught up in the excitement of the jam. This is a 2 for one deal as the Silent Lambs, CRG's developmental team (the JV, so to speak) play their match as a prelude to the Black Sheep taking to the floor. After the feature match ends, the night does not; fans are encouraged to make their way down to the Garden's floor and meet and mingle with the participants from both sides of both matches and get autographs from your favorites. Those of legal drinking age are also invited to an after party with both teams. My wife and I went to the first match of the 2010 season at the invitation of some friends and quickly became fans, not missing a home match, now we can't wait for the 2011 season to begin so we can do it all again. In case it did not come across in my writing, let me say it flat out, the Cincinnati Rollergirls rock! I highly recommend you giving them a try, you will be back. read more

I have been going to the cincy Rollergirls for the past two years and have invite many friends to attend when located at Cincy Gardens. I purchase two ticket at the Xavier location last week. We arrived early for first event. Their was no park available where you stated. The walk would be more than 15 minutes. The return trip would have put us in harms way. We decided not to attend snd i emailed you organization and not response. Is this how you treat your fans. I am now ashamed how i told friends and family about how i loved the Rollergirls. About 11 yrs ago, when I was a junior in high school, I first heard about a little sport called roller derby. It sounded so amazing that I recruited some of my classmates into forming a "team". Since I was " captain" I aptly named myself captain assholio. Well, it turns out, having a cool roller girl name doesn't make you a real team and since none of us owned roller skates, knew how to play, or wanted to get hurt, my dreams of being a roller girl died...until yesterday!!! My husband and I saw our first roller girl match and let me tell you..high school me was right! Roller derby is AWESOME. It was so fun and exciting. I was at the edge of my seat! K lethal was my favorite skater. I was so amazed at her skill on skates. It made me want to look up try out dates and start demanding everyone call me captain assholio again. Always thought this would be a blast so went Saturday night we got there at 615 so maybe we missed them telling what was happening but we were very confused .. We tried to go down to ask someone how the game went but were met with rudeness .. Went to get a drink and asked for a strawberry mascoto and was given a sangria and was told it wAs the Same .. It wasn't but to be fair to the sangria company it was lukewarm in a can so through away 6 dollars on that .. The team seems good but I thought it would be a bit more nonstop action and much more skating instead of apparently stopping it when I think you have enough points ( like I said we couldn't figure it all out .. Went for the first time Saturday night. I'm usually not a sports fan, but I had a great time. Tailgating, happy hour before the game, tough chicks on skates... what's not to love? I do think there's a need for better halftime entertainment, although I'll save my judgment for the most part since I've only been to one game. The junior derby league: awesome. The Insane Sheep Posse: no thanks. Can we get a dance team up in here? Maybe some legit male cheerleaders, for gender parity? I would totally endorse either one. read more

So much fun!!! They really know how to put on a great event here. I love going to the games and seeing all the action. They have started to play teams from all over the country now. They have tailgating before the games and $1 beers until 8pm. They pull in a surprisingly decent crowd as well. You get to see 2 games. The B team and the main team. Each game is about 60 minutes. There is entertainment between the games too. The last couple times I went there was the marching band that played and then the junior roller girls played a game. There is constant action and it is never a dull moment. They all have great nicknames too! June with a Cleaver, Murder Her, Weezy! I absolutely love the Cincinnati Rollergirls and going to their games! It is great entertainment, the girls are awesome, and it is a great place to get cheap beer (if your into that sort of thing). This time last year I had no idea what roller derby was, let alone that there was actually a team in Cincinnati. Went to the season opener in 2010 for a friend's birthday party and instantly fell in love with the sport. It's not a difficult game to understand and very easy to get into. Went to almost every home game last season and now am greatly looking forward to the 2011 season as a trackside season ticket holder. It's $10-$15 for a few hours of a quality sport. It's well worth checking out at least once. read more
