I did a review not so long ago on a little place called Gringos in Huddersfield. Gorgeous Mexican food, mega portions, great value for money, taste superb. Next door is Cibos, this time the food of choice is Italian, not Mexican. Situated under the railway arches, light isn't a premium in here, but it makes for a nice cosy atmosphere, although for eating purposes, maybe red isn't a brilliant wall colour choice as it sucks all the light from the room into the walls. The impression from the tablewear is rustic in appeal, but the wall art states aspirations of a higher ground. Tables are packed in tightly and there's little room for movement when this place is busy.
The last time we went was a Christmas do, and with 16 of us it was a tight fit for elbow room that in addition to another large party behind us left us rather intimate with each other for all the WRONG reasons that night. But it was fun in a weird let's not get rattled by this kinda way. I think it would be fair to say that Cibo's has illusions of grandeur when it comes to self image, that unfortunately don't quite cut the mustard. Don't get me wrong they're nearly there, but for the size of the place, versus the quality of the product, prices run high.
Base judgement, Margherita pizza is £8. To me that's expensive for a basic Margherita. Starters and sides are expensive, portions are on the larger side of average, so that's a bonus. Pasta averages at £8.50 with a high of £9.25. Meat grills are upwards of £17. The night we went the majority of us ordered off the set Christmas menu, we were a couple of minutes late getting into the restaurant, but it didn't matter as the place was heaving with people. From when we were seated to actual food arriving it was around the two hour mark, they were given leniency for the Christmas period, but for heaven's sake it was a set menu. Cibos does set itself out as an authentic Italian cuisine restaurant, but the people who were pleased with their meals were those who ordered things not innately Italian, such as the fish dishes, or good ole fashioned steaks. Those with pizzas and pastas weren't so impressed. Over doughy pizza bases and tacky pasta could have been a by product of the busy night, but with so many dishes turning out as such, I'm taking it for a normal as opposed to an unusual.
For us the night worked out relatively reasonable price wise, and true to their word, they do have an extensive wine list, as tested by many of my colleagues during our wait. My recommendation is try it on a quiet night and see what you think but avoid avoid avoid during busy periods. 2.5 Stars would be more apt. read more
