I have been a customer for 12 years and would not go anywhere else! My is my nail technician and she has been doing my acrylic nails and pedicures all this time. I have tried other salons and in different states and none can even compare. I have been spoiled by My's excellent expertise and truthfully no-one else can even remotely compete. Her pedicures are incredible and she takes the time to perfect everything. I can't say enough great things about My and this salon. Julie and Mary are also excellent technicians. Price-wise, this place is decent. I was trying to find a cheaper place for gel manis than a lot of the other ones in the area (Cathy's is $28, most others are $35), but I guess you get what you pay for. A few weeks ago I went in for a gel mani and a regular pedi. For the pedi, they didn't scrub my feet barely at all; with my mani, the girl was very rough. There were air bubbles on the nails. They did last for about three weeks, but they didn't look great from the get-go. Yesterday I went back in just for the gel mani, and the guy who did my nails didn't just cut the cuticle around my nails, but my actual skin. Then, he took a huge chunk of live skin off on my thumb and it wouldn't stop bleeding. Didn't apologize, nothing. There's a scab there today and it's red and swollen. I get that accidents happen, but he didn't even flinch. At least say you're sorry! I didn't even see him put the utensils in any sanitizing solution, either. Again, there were bubbles under the polish, and I can see now that he missed a few places. Regarding polish color selections....I really prefer OPI gel, and they don't have too many options for that. In my opinion, anyway. They have a bunch of other brands, but I usually say away from those. The regular polish (not gel) seems to have a lot of OPI options. I think I'd rather shell out the extra $7 for a more professional place, that has your nails looking 100% when you leave. And doesn't make you bleed. read more

The women there act like they are in high school and don't care about customer service. I was even yelled at in front of customers by a nail tech! Who does that!?!. I visited here on Friday 5th April. I work just along the road and each time I passed this salon I thought it looked nice so on my lunch break I decided to pop in and get a gel manicure. My cuticles were cut so badly they were bleeding when I got back to work, they were SO sore to touch and bright red. Three days later and my the gels are peeling off, I wanted them done for my holiday but they're already coming off before I've even left the country! I've been going to Cathys Nails off and on since I was 16 years old (I'm 24 now). It's always been the same owners and it's always nice to see the familiar faces. Everyone at this salon does a great job, I've had Danny, Mai, Cathy and Mary... all are meticulous and so friendly! Even when I came back from being way at college they remembered me and welcomed me back warmly. I always get the acrylics and occasionally treat myself to a pedicure - I am never disappointed. Also , I call last minute most of the time and they ALWAYS take me pretty much right away. I would definitely recommend them to a friend! read more

So, I have a mixed review to share. I had been looking for a place in the area to get the Shellac polish, and a family friend recommended this salon. The first time I went, I had Mary and she did a Shellac french manicure. She did a wonderful job, possibly one of the best I have had. The polish lasted for about 4 weeks and just looked perfect. I was thrilled to have found this place. But for some reason, I haven't been able to get her again, even if I request her! I went in again for a regular Shellac manicure and had Danny... and it was very OK. He did the polish in a weird manner... like instead of just going finger by finger... he jumped around? He found file one nail, then go put polish on another... I dunno, it was just weird. I also felt like he was rushing the whole time. Now, the shellac polish is supposed to (and does) last for weeks... but this time the polish peeled off after not even a week. I went back a third time for a shellac french manicure, and they put me with a girl who very clearly didn't know what she was doing. The manicure looked terrible... and they kept telling me it was my fault that it looked bad??? They said I moved my hands in the dryer too much and that is why is looked bad. So I said I wanted it redone, which that did... after making sure I knew it was my fault... and that they were doing me a HUGE favor by redoing it. Danny came over and hurried through it, and again... it looked very OK, and the polish didn't last nearly as long as it should have. I, unfortunately, will not be going back. read more

They were quick and rude to say, "We have nothing till tomorrow". I really want to like this place, it's super convenient and they seem to have a lot of repeat customers (from what I've observed on my two visits) but I've had mediocre manicures both times. We just moved to Reading shortly before our son was born and I've treated myself twice in 6 months to a manicure. The first visit was the fastest manicure I've ever had and the nail clean up was really poor. The most recent visit featured poorly filed nails (what shape was that!?), and a cuticle infection. The filing: I wasn't asked how I wanted them filed, but I did specify "short", in fact I asked for them to be cut, but she pushed the nail file. The first nail was perfect, the rest were completely disregarded and I had to ask for them to be redone, based on length alone. This ended up working to my advantage since I realized that the shape she filed them into had some sort of concave effect. Just really sloppy. The actual polish job was fine. $13 for the manicure and I had $5 that I asked to be broken (not to be cheap, but $3 is 20% and I'm a stay at home mom right now). I asked for change and she subsequently pocketed the $5 with a curt "thanks". Back before baby, I'd have let her have the whole $5, but I literally can't afford that anymore. So I did manage to restate my original request to have the $5 broken. Awkward. Oh yeah, and my thumb cuticle is infected. It just seems like everyone else in there is having a better time somehow. I got a pedicure and gel manicure before my friend's wedding and they did a fantastic job. Clean, cute and FAST! I was in and out in an hour, and I'm thrilled with the result. They take walk ins, but would recommend making an appt on Fridays/weekends since they seemed to be pretty busy. Highly recommend! read more

After moving to Reading from Western Mass, I was trying to find a good place for a pedicure. I had settled on a place in North Reading but had a bad experience there so I came to Cathys Nails. Why didn't I come here before? The pedi was very relaxing with a nice back massage chair. I was not rushed at all and my feet look and feel fantastic! My cuticles were butchered, in particular my thumb which was left bright red and raw and partially bleeding. Not only this, but I asked for rounded nails and got misshapen partially rounded and some pointy nails. Lint in my gel mani, some left on my skin, the list goes on. Worse mani I've ever had. I really like this place; convenience, location and ability to get an apt easily. I agree with most folks; Mary is definitely their best technician and if you can get her you will not be disappointed. I believe Cathy is the other excellent technician. There is one tech who is terrible though and I've needed my nails fixed as well after having her. I will definitely get her name the next time I go and will update my review. She has a bad attitude, does not pay attention and definitely does not know how to shape a nail (which is a basic priority in a nail salon) Since this is a family business, I may actually bring this up with the owners as it may help their business. read more

I had been going here for 2+ years. Danny was the best. After he left, things went down hill fast. Their website states "customer satisfaction" which is the farthest from the truth. When I asked if they could do my nails a bit different then they normally like to do it ( Remember I'm the customer), I was greeted with "that's how we do nails", "don't tell me how to do my job". I just wanted them the same way Danny had done them. But suggestions where taken as criticism. In fact, they blamed me when my nails broke as they were making them thin, which they said is how I wanted them. What they lacked to understand is that I never said I wanted them that thin, they just assumed that is how I wanted them. And when I told them what I wanted, which may have veered from their norm, they gave an attitude and spoke in their native language. They spoke among themselves in their language often which is very unprofessional when you are sitting right in front of them. The straw that broke the camels back was during my most recent visit. I asked if they buffed my nails as they still felt rough. I got a rolling of the eyes, she then asked me if I was ok, ripped out her buffer and said fine I'll buff them more. I said no thank you! She proceeded to state that I stressed her out. Raised her voice and refused to paint my nails. To say the least I left. But I kept my composure as to not get into a child's game with her. And the new owner, who saw the entire thing and didn't say a word. They are all your friend until you tell them how you would like your nails done differently. Then watch out! Mary is the only one in my opinion who is acts professionally at all times. Even if she's upset she would never criticize the customer. Julie needs to learn how to take constructive criticism. There was one person in there getting their nails done and two workers in the back watching TV and they would not take me. Laziness and bad customer service. Definitely will not be returning. The salon is very clean and I have had no problems with either my manis or pedis. My daughter has been coming here for years too and now even my granddaughter! I am giving this business a great rating for the following reasons. My mother and I were from out of town to attend a funeral and I had googled any nail business as close as possible to where we were staying, ( we used Uber for transportation). Upon entering the establishment, the manager informed us that if we could wait an hour, she would gladly fit us in. We had no appointment, so waiting was not an issue for us. It gave us time to visit the local pizza place (next door) which was great too, and the clothing boutique (another awesome store) also by the nail salon. An hour passed, and Mom and I were scheduled for the same lady, Jan. She got right to us and had me soaking my feet before I knew it. Mom was chatting with another client, so all went well. Both of us needed a mani-pedi and within 2 hours, we were done. Jan took care of us, and did not hurry. She understood that I had a nerve issue in my left foot and took care not to have me jumping off the chair due to pain. She also helped relive my Mom of an ingrown toenail, and by the end of the spa visit, our nails and toes looked and felt great. We found out later why the manager could not take us right away, (she had to go pick up her son, and she knew it would be more than just a few minutes). As mothers, Mom and I both could understand, family comes first. I recommend anyone to go here and get pampered, and if you don't have an appointment and just walk in and cant be see right away, take into consideration, that these men and women also have family's and a life. Pretty much the biggest waste of money... I went in for a simple manicure. I have been growing out my nails for weeks and wanted them to be nice for thanksgiving. I got some guy who clearly didn't listen to a word I said. I said I want to keep the length just shape them all the sand. He filed my pinky, showed me and I said great. Then I proceeded to do some reading. I wasn't paying very close attention. Then I looked up as he was doing my thumb. He literally filed every other nail down to a nub and was doing the same on my thumb. I pulled my hands back and said no no too short. And he reaches for the nail clippers!!!! I said NO no more. I don't like them that short. Then he moved onto my other hand. And matched the equally short crap job. Mind you they area all different shapes. Some square some round and some concave. My nails WERE longer then my actual finger and now they are so short they hurt. I will NEVER waste another cent here. I get they are only nails and will grow... But I spent money for a professional to do my nails. Not ruin them. read more

They accommodated me as a walk-in for a mani/pedi, and I liked the results. Price is reasonable also, however the floor was disgusting and had a ton of white 'powder'. I can only assume is 'nail waste", which makes it even worse.... A friend and I decided to try Cathy's Nails for a pedicure after reading positive reviews. We were both very disappointed. We were in and out within 30 minutes -- everything from the soaking to the callus removal to the polishing was rushed. The water -- on a frigid evening -- was tepid. While I don't have heavy calluses, I left the salon with the few I had arrived with. Because of the poor application of the polish, my nails grew out and chipped within a few days. How they have survived in Reading Center for years is beyond me. read more

I have been going to Cathy's Nails for over 10 years. My initial reason for going there is because the salon is so clean. I had been to many others that were gross but Cathy's Nails was spotless. My reason for staying is the staff. Personally, I request Julie to do my mani (with shellac)/pedi. My daughter makes her appointments with Mary. However, over the years I have had my nails done by everyone in the shop.
