This is just your average Mexican restaurant. There really isn't anything special about this place, and that is why I gave it 3 stars. The classic chips and salsa to begin the meal is nice, as it was free. I would say it was just average. As for my entree, I get the same meal at every Mexican restaurant, which is arroz con pollo. The one at chula's was again, just average. Although it did come with mushrooms, which was a nice touch. Overall, the taste was good, but nothing spectacular. Also, one knock that I do have on the restaurant is the pricing. I don't believe the arroz con pollo should be priced at 14$. If you are in a rush and are craving Mexican, I would suggest it, but otherwise I suggest going to the many great restaurants in the Eugene area. read more

Went for dinner, one of the bus guys wiped his nose and face during our entire meal without washing his hands, then proceeded to scoop chips with his bare hands and deliver to customers. Uhg. I really hate updating reviews for the worst. My first experience here had been wonderful! We had delicious chips and salsa, tacos and a great conversation with the owner herself. After the past four or so times giving this place one try after the other, I wonder if my initial experience had been so great BECAUSE the owner was there. After my most recent visit I just don't think I will be coming back. We decided to come in and have some food and finally give the margaritas a try because they looked pretty good from what I had seen. The two of us ordered two taco combo plates with two margaritas. I love their chips and salsa here, they are warm and delicious and I have to stop myself from eating the whole basket! When the tacos arrived I noticed the meat I ordered was incorrect. This has become a common occurrence when I come here. The meat isn't correct, I was given the wrong order, I didn't receive my soup, the enchilada filling was incorrect...all of these things aren't a big deal on their own but time and time again because frustrating for someone who is trying to be a regular customer. The employees have always taken off the food I never received and apologized for incorrect orders but it makes me wonder who is at fault here, is it the kitchen or the servers? Back to the margaritas... the size of the margaritas is very generous and you definitely say, "OH WOW!" when one is brought to your table. We ordered two cadillac margaritas on the rocks like we always do (we have had many margaritas throughout our dining adventures). First of all it took about 15-20 minutes for the drinks to arrive but I figured well they must be making them from scratch with their advertised "homemade margarita mix". Once they arrived, it only took one sip for the sugar to hit me like a wall of bricks. Woah. The sweetness of the margarita was so intense that I couldn't even drink more than four sips of it. If you're someone who likes really really sweet drinks then this might be great for you but if you're someone who enjoys quality drinks and tries to monitor their sugar intake then this not for you! This was in no way what a margarita should taste like especially since it wasn't flavored with any fruit or anything of the sort. I came to find out that they make giant batches of their margaritas which is fine but that not only makes me wonder if the batch was made improperly but it also makes me wonder why it took 15 minutes to make them. The waitress was apologetic and took the drink away but I had to ask to have it taken off of my bill. I never try to get freebies from restaurants but I really didn't want to pay close to $9 for a drink that would send me into a sugar coma. I hope that the restaurant can take this as constructive criticism from someone who really wants to give them my business and referrals. When they make the dish right, it tastes great and I appreciate their homemade tortillas and atmosphere but consistency and attention to detail is what will keep the regulars coming back. read more

So first time I came to Chulas I loved it. Great atmosphere, good service, and yummy unique assortment of Mexican food. The last few times have fell short, specifically today. I called in a Chulas California burrito to go and I asked if I could get chips and salsa to go also since I'm not eating at the restaurant they said there would be a charge but yet they give you an unlimited amount when you eat there... What? I started eating my burrito and it hardly had any of the ranch sauce on it and the steak wasn't very warm. So bummed with my last few experiences, especially dropping 9 dollars for a mediocre burrito with no chips and salsa included because I got it to go. After a hour of debating on where to eat with friends we finally decided on here. I had never been here to eat up until this trip so I didn't know what to expect. Eugene has been lacking in good Mexican food in my opinion living here for over 20 years. This place was great and has reasonable prices. I tried the Chicken en Mole and really enjoyed it. I ordered a carne asada burrito with guac, pico, and cheese and they put beans, rice and lettuce in it. On top of that the carne asada was bland and chewy. My boyfriend and I shared Nachos that were soggy and had about 12 chips with a ton of cold cheese and dry chicken on top, again very bland. The cheese enchiladas were good, and the beans and rice were also good.. but then again who can mess up enchiladas, beans and rice? The only reason I would come back is for their fried ice cream if it's on the way.. since I now have some credit there. read more

Mexican food is always my go-to! We decided on Chula's because every other Mexican joint was closed or closing by the time we made it to Eugene, so why not? It has decent reviews, right? We'll, that's the thing. It's just decent. As others have already stated, it's average. The mole sauce was definitely delicious, but they used iceberg lettuce instead of cabbage. Not a huge deal for most, but my favorite Mexican spots always use cabbage. Also fairly expensive for the quality of food. Wait staff was really nice but we were not once asked if we wanted water and neither asked if we wanted a refill on our drinks. Overall 3/5, one star due to cost being a bit expensive (probably because it's on Campus, I'm sure) and another star is because there was nothing really special about the restaurant. Always excited to try a new place in town. We waited a couple months for them to work out any "new restaurant kinks". Walked in for lunch today and the special was Enchiladas - my favorite! I ordered the two enchilada special (comes with rice and beans). I chose chicken from a field of several protein sources. I then chose the spinach-cheese sauce under sauce options. Our waitress had to ask the kitchen to clarify what it was - it's a tomatillo base with spinach and cheese - sounded great! My husband ordered shrimp fajitas and our friend got chicken enchiladas with the traditional sauce. Our food came out and my enchiladas looked just like the traditional sauce my friend got. I asked the waitress about it and she assured me that the spinach, tomatillo and cheese was on the inside (which made no sense). I used my fork to open the enchiladas. Enchilada #1 was filled with a mixture of chicken, broccoli and carrots. Enchilada #2 was plain chicken. Crazy!!!! I sent it back after clarifying what I had ordered. The next plate I got contained a tomatillo sauce and cheese (a good sign). l took a bite and got a mouthful of spinach (yea!). And another bite full of spinach. I opened them up - THERE WAS NO CHICKEN IN MY CHICKEN ENCHILADAS. I asked for the manager - there was not one on site but a lead worker came over. He was very apologetic and informed me he would "comp me" the food that I did not order. He asked if there was anything else he could do. I suggested that if they wanted me to come back they might consider giving me a gift card as an incentive. He apparently had no authority to do so. My friend's regular enchiladas were meh - dry chicken and average sauce. So why did I score this a 3? Because the shrimp fajitas were REALLY GOOD!!! Leaving this place now without eating after waiting 45 minutes when originally told the wait time was 20 minutes for 5 people and a high chair. After patiently waiting with a tired baby we watched as a party of 7 who put their name in awhile after us was given the table we were told was ours. And they put in their food orders. When I asked why I was rudely told that it was the only table that would fit their party. Even though we clearly saw high tops that had 7 people sitting at them with an extra chair added. We reminded them about us needing the high chair for the baby. Of course they tried to sit us at the high top which wasn't going to work with the short baby high chair so we had to leave after waiting so long for dinner.
