I was walking towards Finsbury Park tube station, and abruptly stopped in front of their street sign. Jollof rice, you say? That's Nigerian kryptonite. Powerless, I walked down the stairway and entered the very empty basement-level restaurant. The decor is nothing to write home about - there were a few tables and couches aimlessly placed about, nothing on the walls. The only other customer was some uncle at the bar (there's always one). I ordered jollof rice, chicken, and do-do for £9 to takeaway. The restaurant owner then walked back to the kitchen to place the order (and maybe cook the food?). The uncle and I chatted for about 20 mins until my food was ready. He gave me unsolicited life advice and slightly creeped me out. You know how it goes. When I got home, I tore that food up! I will say that the jollof rice had the slightly smoky taste. I'm personally not a fan, but the taste wasn't strong enough to disgust me. I gave this place only four stars because I don't think I could ever sit and dine in the restaurant. The interior is plainer than the average person's dining room. Also, I'm not sure why it would take 20 mins to put jollof rice, chicken, and do-do in a takeaway container. The do-do might have been freshly made, but it still doesn't take that long. Moreover, I was the only customer!

My husband generally doesn't care for mushrooms, but the grilled garlic mushrooms that we ordered were his favorite he's ever had, so much so that he wanted to keep eating more and more (and I can agree as a lover of mushrooms that they were some of the best prepared that I've had!). Additionally, I have never tried African rice before, but it was so flavorful and the addition of the crispy chicken skin was great. The server gave great recommendations for the Vinho Verde wine. I enjoyed both of the ones that we got and my husband, who enjoys port liked the port + tonic cocktail. It's beautiful inside and lively but not too crazy or loud. It's a lovely place to go to for an intimate date or with a group. We would definitely love to come here again with more people so that we can share more items on the menu!
